UNIT 5 THE VALUE OF MONEY

These days, many young people wonder if they would be better served by striking out on their own than pursuing a college education. In this rapidly evolving(进化) digital era, narratives of overnight success and entrepreneurial(创业的) glory have flooded our social media feeds, fascinating the digital natives of Gen Z into questioning the worth of an expensive traditional college degree.
Contrary to popular belief, successful entrepreneurship is rarely seen among the young. Recent research suggests that the average age of founders in the U. S. when they launched their companies is 42, rising to 45 for those within the top 0.1% of earnings based on growth in their first five years. That's even the case for hightech startups. Indeed, successful entrepreneurship is frequently the result of years of learning, experimenting and risktaking—traits cultivated over time.
Campuses create environments rich in intellectual diversity and foster cooperation among their inhabitants, promoting an entrepreneurial mindset. They encourage students to challenge established norms and develop their unique thinking patterns to create value-practices that are also key to entrepreneurial success. Thus, higher education is not just about attaining a degree; it's more importantly about acquiring the skills and experiences that inspire and enable the entrepreneurs of tomorrow.
But some may doubt since formal entrepreneurship itself isn't typically a course of study, are all college majors capable of instilling entrepreneurial skills? Let's examine the arts majors, which are often subjected to the most suspicion concerning their career paths. Consider a theater major. That curriculum often includes entrepreneurshipfocused capabilities beyond the stage direction, lighting, sound systems and performance. Students learn to mobilize resources, lead creative teams and navigate the uncertainties of a theatrical production—skills that are readily transferable to launching any entrepreneurial business.
Like a compass for the future, entrepreneurship guides us toward a society that prizes critical thinking, nurtures(培养) intellectual curiosity and champions innovation. Let's not get swept away by shortlived trends or misleading narratives. Instead, we should appreciate the enduring value of college education.
1.What do the figures in Paragraph 2 indicate?
A.The chance of success multiplies with age.
B.Young people dominate hightech startups.
C.Quite a number of enterprises are in the red.
D.Successful entrepreneurship isn't built in a day.
2.Which of the following is the most crucial to entrepreneurial success?
A.Sticking to one's own principles.
B.Acquiring knowledge from textbooks.
C.Developing a startup mentality.
D.Following established norms and traditions.
3.Why is a theater major mentioned in Paragraph 4?
A.To illustrate it is complex and demanding.
B.To prove people's suspicion is reasonable.
C.To show entrepreneurial skills can be integrated into all majors.
D.To stress it is the launch pad for successful entrepreneurship.
4.Which section of a newspaper does the text probably come from?
A.Arts. B.Insights.
C.Entertainment. D.News.
根据第二段中的“Contrary to popular belief, successful entrepreneurship is rarely seen...in their first five years.”
根据第三段第二句“They encourage students to...create value—practices that are also key to entrepreneurial success.” 此处unique thinking patterns指代上文中的an entrepreneurial mindset,与选项中的a startup mentality相呼应,且题干中的the most crucial与原文中的key语义相近。]
第四段第一句“But some may doubt... all college majors capable of instilling entrepreneurial skills?”

We often try to save money for a variety of different reasons. It might be to save up for a new computer or put money aside into a rainyday fund. __1__, but a recent study showed that over half of all 22~29yearolds living in the UK have no savings at all. Did they max out on too many things, or are there other factors? And how can we become better savers?
First, put a stop to those impulse buys. __2__, even if it is on sale or looks like a bargain. Impulse buys are done in the heat of the moment and without thought for what it's costing you. Encouraging yourself to question your purchase before you buy allows you to process what you are doing.
__3__. Withdraw cash before you go to a restaurant or shopping and set a fixed budget you must stick to. Also, any change that comes from your transactions when you're using cash can be put in jar and deposited into your account.
Finally, be disciplined. __4__. It's about sticking to it, too. You shouldn't be dipping into your savings every time you feel like it. Setting up a standing order from your current account into your savings the moment you receive your salary will ensure you keep up the habit. __5__.
Just as the old saying goes: “A penny saved is a penny earned.” These are some of the actions we can take to help us all become better savers.
A.Learning how to save is important
B.Ask about discounts and pay in cash
C.It's not just about creating that budget
D.Sometimes, saving money can be difficult
E.Another way is to use cash rather than card
F.Ask yourself if you really need to buy something
G.Successful savers stick to their plans and watch the money pile up
1.A [根据后文“but a recent study showed that over half of all 22~29yearolds living in the UK have no savings at all. Did they max out on too many things, or are there other factors? And how can we become better savers?( 但最近的一项研究表明,超过一半的22至29岁的英国人根本没有储蓄。
2.F [根据上文“First, put a stop to those impulse buys.(首先,停止冲动购买。)”以及后文“even if it is on sale or looks like a bargain. Impulse buys are done in the heat of the moment and without thought for what it's costing you. Encouraging yourself to question your purchase before you buy allows you to process what you are doing.(即使它正在打折或看起来很便宜。
3.E [根据后文“Withdraw cash before you go to a restaurant or shopping and set a fixed budget you must stick to. Also, any change that comes from your transactions when you're using cash can be put in jar and deposited into your account.(在你去餐馆或购物之前提取现金,并设定一个你必须坚持的固定预算。
以及后文“It's about sticking to it, too. You shouldn't be dipping into your savings every time you feel like it. Setting up a standing order from your current account into your savings the moment you receive your salary will ensure you keep up the habit.(这也是关于坚持的问题。
5.G [根据上文“Setting up a standing order from your current account into your savings the moment you receive your salary will ensure you keep up the habit.(在你拿到工资的那一刻,从你的活期账户中建立一个定期存款账户,这样可以确保你保持这个习惯。)”

A few years back, we found ourselves in financial difficulties. With two small children to feed, making ends meet was hard.People around us kept saying, “Think positive.” “One day, you'll get there.” and “You'll be okay.”
It's difficult to do that when you think there's no end in sight, but my husband and I decided not to be depressed about it but to make the most of what we had. After all, we were all healthy and happy; that was important, too.
But, one Tuesday, we hit rock bottom. My husband said we needed groceries and asked me for some money.I did not have any, we were broke. He said he would put it on the credit card.No money there, either. But it was Tuesday, and payday was not until Friday. How were we going to feed the kids?
During that time, I was very busy and was devoted to an important project. The boss John promised me that I would get a big bonus if the project was finished well.
That day, I told my husband I had to go to work, and that I would think about it on my way there.I knew I had to think positive and somehow it would work out.
I was getting a ride with my coworker, Jeff, since we were a onecar family, and I considered asking him if I could borrow twenty dollars. But he was already nice enough to give me a ride every day, and I did not want him to think I was trying to take advantage.
So, when I arrived at work, I was in a bit of a panic.Who should I ask? What if no one could help me? What would I do? I knew I had to think positive, so I decided to swallow my pride and ask another coworker for some money.I would write an IOU, be thankful, and hope this situation would never happen again.
But before getting to that coworker, I went first to our locker room.I was surprised to see an envelope in my employee mailbox. What was that about?

I hesitantly pulled out the envelope. Inside lay a neatly folded note and a crisp twentydollar bill. The note read, “We've seen your dedication to the project even in tough times. This is a small advance, no strings attached. You've got this!” The message was written by my boss John.Overcome with a mix of relief and gratitude, I found tears welled up in my eyes. This unexpected kindness meant I could buy groceries for my children.
I grasped the twentydollar bill and rushed to John's office, grateful. To my surprise, John greeted me with a broad smile.“Just the person I wanted to see,” he said, sliding an envelope across his desk.“Given your outstanding efforts on the project, we've decided to give you a bonus early.” As I opened it, more money spilled out.In that moment, I realized that staying positive and persevering paid off, and that the support of my colleagues and employer lifted me out of the darkest days of our financial struggle.
