Kendall Griffith is a student at Bard College majoring in both the pipa, a fourstringed Chinese lute, and Asian studies.Born and raised in Boston, Griffith started her journey into Chinese culture nine years ago, when she began learning Chinese for its writing system and tones.
While learning Chinese, she was captivated by traditional Chinese music in a drama she was watching.Griffith did some research and discovered that the instrument she was drawn to was the pipa.
“I like the sound of the pipa, especially the techniques that are incorporated with it,” Griffith says, adding that her parents and friends have been very supportive of her learning Chinese traditional music.
Griffith's father helped her discover the instrument and she found her first pipa teacher, who was part of the Boston Chinese Ensemble.Sometimes, after performances, people would tell her, “I've never seen a nonChinese person play this before. That's very cool.”
Last semester, Griffith studied at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing.Learning the pipa in the city, where “Chinese music is happening”, Griffith felt pushed beyond her comfort zone and learned more about her passion.
“There was an interesting lecture that talked about how most Chinese music emulates things in calligraphy. There's a lot of empty space, and I can now incorporate that feeling into a lot of the music I play,” she says.
“Chinese music also emulates nature in a way.The sound it makes can resemble a horse; you can visualize it.There are many techniques not seen in Western instruments, such as bending the strings or using your five fingers to create a tremolo.I enjoy telling my friends about it,” she says.Griffith's friends, who were amazed by her impressions, started attending more Chinese music concerts, wanting to learn more.
Diving into another culture through music makes Griffith value the culture more. She said, “When you learn about a different type of music, it makes you appreciate the culture more.It makes you realize how important it is to be openminded.I feel more openminded about why things are the way they are.”

The Dream of a Young Pianist
In a small, quiet town, there lived a young boy named Alex. From a young age, Alex was fascinated by the magic of the piano. The moment he heard the first harmonious melody floating from an old piano in his school auditorium, a dream was born — to become a distinguished pianist.
Determined to pursue his passion, Alex begged his parents to let him take piano lessons. His parents, though not wealthy, saw the fire in his eyes and decided to make sacrifices. They bought him a secondhand piano and enrolled him in a local music school.Alex practiced day and night, his fingers flying over the keys, filled with the hope of one day performing on a grand stage.
However, life had other plans. One day, while riding his bike to school, Alex was involved in an accident. His right hand was severely injured, and the doctor's words ruined his dreams: He might never play the piano again. For weeks, Alex sank into a deep depression. He refused to look at the piano and lost all hope.In his dimlylit bedroom, the boy sat aimlessly every day, his head hung low.His hands, once full of promise, now bore the scars of an accident that shattered his dream of becoming a pianist.
His music teacher Jack had been worried about him since then and tried to comfort him.Until one day, Jack walked into his room.“I know it hurts,” Jack said softly, “but your love for music is not in your hands alone. It's in your heart.” Jack shared the stories of some famous composers and musicians who overcame physical limitations and hardships. These words lit a spark in the boy.Alex decided he wouldn't let this setback define him. With painstaking effort and countless hours of rehabilitation, he slowly regained some movement in his hand.He started practicing the piano again, very slowly at first. Each note was a struggle, but he persevered.

As time went by, Alex's skills improved. He was happy that his fingers were flexible even if not so good as before. He began to have some confidence again. Now he expected to participate in local piano competitions, facing tough competitors.Despite multiple losses in the early competitions, Alex didn't give up.With the teacher's continuous encouragement and help, he analyzed his performances, learned from his mistakes, and kept improving his skills. He began to explore composition, pouring his emotions into melodies. Finally, his hard work paid off.
In a regional competition, Alex presented an outstanding performance for the first time.It was so outstanding that it made him win the first place.Nobody would believe this success should come from a person who suffered severe hurt in his right hand. All of the audience was absorbed in his music, and tears of joy streamed down his face as he took the stage to receive the award. This was just the beginning.Alex's fame gradually spread, and he was invited to perform in more significant concerts.Without his teacher's encouragement, he wouldn't have transformed his pain into a new path to success.
