Emily Sanders,a 25-year-old from Detroit,Michigan, set out on December 23d with high hopes of
reaching Toronto to meet her boyfriend for Christmas.Although she had heard warnings about an
approaching snowstorm, she didn't give it much thought. She assumed that much like in Michigan, police
would simply detour (traffic around any closed sections of the highway. But that didn't happen.
As the snow came down more and more heavily,Emily was directed off the highway. She drove on for a
while and found herself on an unfamiliar road toward a Canadian town.
The blinding whiteout made driving nearly impossible. At one point,Emily's car got stuck. After a
struggle, she managed to free the vehicle and continued inching along the snow-covered road.As night
fell, panic set in.While Emily was driving on a narrow stretch of road, her car slid into a ditch ()She
tried to call for help but found no signal on her phone.Seeing no hope of immediate rescue,Emily decided
to spend the night in her car.She wrapped herself in a blanket, waiting for morning. To stay warm, she ran
her engine for a few minutes every now and then.Eventually, she fell asleep.
Emily awoke to a gentle knock on her car window.Standing outside were Daniel and his wife Rachel,
who noticed the stranded vehicle on their way home and stopped to see if they could help. When
Emily rolled down the window,Rachel asked if she was okay and told her it was not safe to stay overnight
in the car. With genuine warmth in her voice,Rachel said they could take Emily to a nearby cafe they
knew.Grateful and relieved,Emily accepted the offer.
In the cafe, the couple bought Emily a hot chocolate and listened patiently as she explained her
desperate situation:she was about a hundred miles from her destination, her car was completely stuck, and
her entire holiday plan could be ruined.
Daniet and Rachet suggested that Emily continue her journey by
train.Hearing this,Emily's eyes lit up with a glimmer of hope, yet she
quickly frowned, worrying about her stranded car and the complicated
arrangements.Sensing her anxiety,Rachel gently patted her shoulder-
and assured her that they would take care of everything. With Daniel's
help,Emily managed to book a ticket for the next available train. Before

seeing her off at the station, the couple thoughtfully gave her a warm-
scarf and a handwritten note with their contact information, urging her
to let them know when she arrived safely.Touched by their kindness,
Emily boarded the train with heartfelt gratitude:The journey, though
long, was smooth, and she finally reunited with her boyfriend on-
Christmas Eve,the joy of the moment overshadowing all the previous
hardships.
-----Three days later,Emily returned to get her car.To her great
surprise, she found that Daniet and Rachel had already contacted a
local towing service and had her car pulled out of the ditch. Not only-
that, but they had also arranged for it to be temporarily parked at a
safe garage near their home:Overwhetmed with emotion,Emily went-

to their house to express her sincere thanks.Rachel smiled warmly
and said it was their pleasure to help a traveler in need.Deeply moved
by their selflessness,Emily insisted on treating them to a dinner as a
small token of appreciation.During the meal, they shared stories and--
laughter, and Emily realized that this unexpected twist had given her
something more precious than a smooth trip---a lasting friendship
born out of a snowstorm.

As far as I can remember,I've always been a night owl.Even in middle school I would stay up very
late.I would feel completely at ease doing my homework in bed, with light music on.I found comfort in
keeping myself awake when everyone else had gone to bed,and I loved the silence of the night. My
parents urged me to get out of this so-called unhealthy habit, but their repeated requests fell on deaf ears.
Fast forward to my first year of college.I still loved the night and would stay up until unruly hours for
no apparent reason, chatting online and watching videos. When I finally started to study,I would race
through the assigned work, often well past midnight. My roommates would tell me to go to bed and get up
early the following morning to do it instead.Get up early to do my homework? No way!I would never do
that.
Then, one day last term,I did exactly that.Bent over my laptop while sitting on the bed in the corner
of my room,I suddenly felt a pounding headache, and had to lie down.Unable to keep my eyes open,I
decided I had no choice but to finish my homework the next morning.I woke up at 6 am.Hardly had I
written half a page when I felt a sharp pain in my chest.
At the school clinic,a doctor, with a serious expression on his face, handed me a medical report.
"You're 20,but your heart is 40!"he said.A cold wave went through me.I realized that years of living as a
late-night person had turned my heart into an overworked engine.

On a sunny Saturday afternoon,I was driving my daughter to her weekly swimming lesson. As we
came to a heavily traveled street,we saw an unusual procession approaching:a bony,wild-eyed cow
followed by many cars, and boys on bicycles and on foot.
"That poor cow!"I said angrily."Those ignorant city people are frightening her."
At that time,my daughter, aged nine, believed that her papa was equal to any crisis."What are you
going to do?"she asked.
"See that piece of rope around her neck?"I said."After I leave you at the swimming center,I'll go
back and catch her and hold her for her owner, who's probably trying to find her."Having milked cows as
a boy and worked with beef cattle,I knew-so I thought-all about cows.

My wife and I wanted to share our new home with family and friends by hosting a small gathering in
the early summer. She had prepared lots of snacks, while my job was to have the backyard in order.
There was plenty of space for the kids to run and play. There was just one thing I hadn't counted on:
My brother chose to bring his dog Toby,a 50-pound ball of fire.Though friendly,he could easily knock
over my niece's small boys and my six-month-old granddaughter. So,when my brother showed up,I asked
him to watch Toby and keep him outside.
My plan was working out just fine.Toby was using up his energy by running back and forth in the
backyard and giving the kids plenty of room.Unexpectedly, after supper, the weather changed. It started to
rain and everyone went indoors.
It was an awkward moment.I didn't want Toby to be running around in the house, and my brother
wasn't happy with driving home with a wet dog.Eventually,my brother decided to leave rather than force
the issue.
A few days passed, and I hadn't heard anything from my brother.I texted him and expressed wishes
for him to come out again. His reply came as a surprisea shock, actually:"Not a chance."Clearly,he
was unhappy over the way we had parted. After all,I had left him little choice.Well,he'll get over it,I
reasoned.
Two months passed. My wife suggested I get in touch with my brother, but I resisted, thinking he
should call first. However,my conscience (kept bothering me.I tried to put myself in my brother's
shoes. He was facing health issues and his wife of thirty-five years had passed away a few months earlier.

"What is your name?"is a question most frequently asked when people meet for the first time. But for
me,it was the first challenge I encountered as an international student in Ireland.
The pronunciation system of the Chinese language is quite different from that of English. For native
speakers of English, some Chinese words are rather difficult to pronounce. My given name Qiuyu )
for instance, happened to be a great challenge for many of them.Every time I gave a self-introduction,I
had to explain how to pronounce my name at least five times, yet they still could not say it the way I did.
Once in a lecture, the professor tried repeating my name after me over and over in front of thirty
classmates.I really did not know whether I should continue correcting him or simply drop the matter.I
feared that my classmates might grow tired of my efforts or even lose patience with me.After all,I did
care about how others would think of me.I realized that if I didn't stop, the entire lecture would be ruined.
"It's okay, professor,"I shrugged ()The awkward moment ended with the class erupting into
laughter.I forced a smile, unsure how to respond further.
After that incident,I stopped acting as a "Chinese teacher."Instead of correcting others when they
were struggling to pronounce my name,I just smiled and nodded approvingly. This approach spared me
the discomfort of having to over-explain.However,I soon found that by doing so,I might be losing
something more important:the opportunity to share a small part of my cultural identity.
-In a class discussion,I was invited to explain the meaning of my
name.Recalling the prior uncomfortable incident in the lecture,1
hesitated for a moment, but then explained that Qiu"means Autumn
and“Yu”means Rain.土added that“aigu”(Autumn Rain)often--=
carries a feeling of gentle beauty and quiet thought in Chinese culture.
Unlike before, the professor listened with genuine interest, and my-

classmates leaned in,their expressions showing curiosity, not boredom.
It felt different this time, exptaining my name wasn't a difficult
pronunciation lesson, but an opportunity to share a piece of my
identity.Their warm smiles and appreciative nods made me feel
understood,sparking further interest among them.
Many of my classmates got interested and came up to me after-
class.Their inquiries extended beyond mere pronunciation, they delved
deeper into the name's narrative and explored other facets of Chinese
culture.Instead of feeling the need to just smile and nod approvingly,I
felt comfortable answering their questions patiently. The earlier fear
of being judged or causing inconvenience simply disappeared during
our friendly chat.1 realized that embracing these moments wasn't

tosing politeness but gaining connection and understanding. From
then on,I perceived my name less as a challenge for others and more
as a bridge to share my culturat background with new friends.--

Kevin was pretty bored. His mother was at work, and his father had been away on business.
Therefore,he was left in the care of Mrs.Hill,an old lady who lived next door. His parents had raised the
12-year-old to be a good boy.He never got into trouble, though sometimes he wanted to do risky things.
Mrs.Hill was asleep.Kevin sighed (and hoped something exciting would happen.Suddenly,a
movement outside caught his eye.
Mrs.Hill's front window faced Mr.and Mrs.Green's house across the street. The couple had both
gone to work,so it was strange that someone was over there.Kevin stared at the man at their front door.
Suddenly, the man jumped through an open window into the house. With his heart in his mouth,Kevin
grabbed Mrs.Hill's home phone and called the police.
Thinking that the man might get away with whatever he wanted before the police arrived,Kevin
decided to do something. He rushed out of Mrs.Hill's house and crossed the street quickly.Grabbing a
branch from a cut-down tree,he jumped in through the window."Stop right there! You must leave right
now!"he called out, holding the branch with both hands.
The man froze for a second, but when he saw the skinny boy he breathed a sigh of relief."Hey,kid,
put that down.It was my home.My parents used to live here and my father's watch was here,"he
explained,trying to lift a floorboard.
At that moment, the sounds of a police car echoed in the air.The man stood up in a panic, then
ran through the house toward the window and jumped out.Kevin followed out and told the arriving police
officers what had happened. They pursued and arrested the man.
Kevin went back to Mrs.Hill's house.Somehow he wasn't sure he had done the right thing."What if
he has told the truth?"he thought to himself. The man's words sounded pretty convincing.
When Mr.Green and Mrs.Green were back,Kevin went to talk to
them."What a weird incident I met today in your house!"Kevin said

Kevin and Mr.Green took the watch they had found to the police

I met Gunter on a cold, wet and unforgettable evening in September.I had planned to fly to Vienna
and take a bus to Prague for a conference.Due to a big storm,my flight had been delayed by an hour and a

I got off the plane,I ran like crazy through the airport building and jumped into the first taxi on the rank
without a second thought.
That was when I met Gunter.I told him where I was going, but he said he hadn't heard of the bus
station.I thought my pronunciation was the problem,so I explained again more slowly, but he still looked
confused. When I was about to give up,Gunter fished out his little phone and rang up a friend. After a
heated discussion that lasted for what seemed like a century,Gunter put his phone down and started the
car.
Finally, with just two minutes to spare we rolled into the bus station.Thankfully, there was a long
queue (still waiting to board the bus.Gunter parked the taxi behind the bus, turned around, and

Eva spent the first week of high school trying to keep her head above water. One of the major
headaches for her was finding her way in the huge school building. It was a six-story building. On each
floor,hallways stretched in four directions,leading to classrooms,laboratories,and teachers'offices.
Somewhere in the building,there was also a library,a cafeteria,and a gym.
Having a poor sense of direction,Eva found it impossible to get around in such a huge building. All
the different hallways and rooms were too much to think about, let alone commit to memory. She decided
that she would memorize where her classes were and then pretend that the rest of the place didn't exist.
In her first PE class,Eva was shocked when Coach Pitt announced that everyone had to run one mile
around the track outside. She searched the faces of her classmates for signs of panic. There was nothing
she feared more than having to run a whole mile.To Eva,"a mile"was used to describe long distances. It
was ten miles from her home to her grandfather's,and that always seemed like a long way, even in a car!
When Coach Pitt blew his whistle ()Eva figured she would be left in the dust. However, while
some of her classmates edged ahead, others actually fell behind."It's just the beginning,"she thought."I'll
come in last for sure..”
Soon Eva began to breathe hard, with her heart pounding and legs shaking.Feeling desperate,Eva
started using a mind trick on herself. She stopped thinking about the word"mile".Instead, she focused on
reaching the shadow cast on the track by an oak tree up ahead. Then she concentrated on jogging to the
spot where the track curved )After that, she tried to see if she could complete her first lap.One lap
turned into two,then three,then four.
--When Coach Pitt said "Nice work!"to her at the finish line,Eva
was surprised. She glanced back at the track, still catching her breath,
hardly believing that her legs had carried her through the entire mile.
It was not until that moment that she realized the power of breaking a

seemingly impossible task into bite-sized pieces. The oak tree's shadow,
the curved spot, the first lap-each tiny milestone had distracted her
from the overwhelming distance, turning panic into progress.A surge
of confidence washed over her,as if a door had opened in her mind.if--
she could conquer the mile by focusing on the nearest target, why
couldn't the same trick work for the six-story maze of hallways and-
rooms? With that thought, she smiled and made a silent promise to
herself
Eva decided to use the same trick to deal with the school building.
Instead of memorizing the entire floor plan at once, she divided the
building into zones:the first floor for the library and cafeteria, the
second for her math and English classrooms, and so on.Fach day,she

would explore only one zone, paying close attention to landmarks like-
the water fountain, the large window,or the poster on the walt.Step
by step, the chaotic map in her head began to take shape. What had-
once terrified her now became a manageable puzzle.By the end of the
first month, she could navigate from the gym to the science lab without
hesitation, and even help lost freshmen find their way Eva learned that
every great chatlenge, when broken down,is nothing more than a series
of small,achievable steps--and that courage,after all,is not the
absence of fear, but the decision to move forward one step at a time.

It was the day of the big cross-country run.Students from seven different primary schools in and
around the small town were warming up and walking the route (through thick evergreen forest.
I looked around and finally spotted David, who was standing by himself off to the side by a fence. He
was small for ten years old.His usual big toothy smile was absent today.I walked over and asked him why
he wasn't with the other children. He hesitated and then said he had decided not to run.
What was wrong? He had worked so hard for this event!
I quickly searched the crowd for the school's coach and asked him what had happened."I was afraid
that kids from other schools would laugh at him,"he explained uncomfortably."I gave him the choice to

I bit back my frustration ()I knew the coach meant well-he thought he was doing the right

small body rocking from side to side as he swung his feet forward.
David had a brain disease which prevented him from walking or running like other children, but at
school his classmates thought of him as a regular kid.He always participated to the best of his ability in
whatever they were doing. That was why none of the children thought it unusual that David had decided to

working with the one person in class I wanted to avoid.
I went up to my new teammate and introduced myself. He looked at me as though I weren't there.I

Needless to say,I didn't look forward to an entire term of being brushed off,but I tried to make the

The big day came at last. The alarm rang at 6 a.m.The pair went down the stairs quietly to the
kitchen. They decided to boil the porridge first. They put some rice into a pot of water and left it to boil
while they made the French toast.Jeff broke two eggs into a plate and added in some milk.Jenna found the
bread and put two slices into the egg mixture.Next,Jeff turned on the second stove burner to heat up the
frying pan.Everything was going smoothly until Jeff started frying the bread. The pan was too hot and the
bread turned black within seconds.Jenna threw the burnt piece into the sink and put in the other slice of
bread. This time, she turned down the fire so it cooked nicely.
Then Jeff noticed steam shooting out of the pot and the lid starting to shake. The next minute, the
porridge boiled over and put out the fire.Jenna panicked.Thankfully,Jeff stayed calm and turned off the
gas quickly. But the stove was a mess now.Jenna told Jeff to clean it up so they could continue to cook the
rest of the porridge. But Jeffs hand touched the hot burner and he gave a cry of pain.Jenna made him put
his hand in cold water. Then she caught the smell of burning.
Oh dear! The piece of bread in the pan had turned black as well.
As the twins looked around them in disappointment, their father
appeared.Sensing the mess and their frustrated faces,he let out a-
gentle chuckle rather than a scolding."Well, well, every great cook

and even added a handwritten note. The kitchen, once a disaster zone,

The twins carried the breakfast upstairs and woke their mother up.
Still half-asleep,Mother sat up and stared at the tray in disbelief--the
neatly cut toast, the steaming porridge, and the wobbly heart drawn
in jam."Happy Mother's Day!"-Jenna and Jeff chorused,their eyes
shining with pride and anxiety.Mother putled them into a tight embrace,
her voice choked with emotion."This is the most precious breakfast I've

One fall,my wife Elli and I had a single goal:to photograph polar bears. We were staying at a
research camp outside"the polar bear capital of the world"-the town of Churchill in Manitoba,Canada.
Taking pictures of polar bears is amazing but also dangerous.Polar bears-like all wild animals-
should be photographed from a safe distance. When I'm face to face with a polar bear,I like it to be
through a camera with a telephoto lens. But sometimes, that is easier said than done. This was one of those
times.
As Elli and I cooked dinner,a young male polar bear who was playing in a nearby lake sniffed, and
smelled our garlic bread.

Terrified,Elli and I tried all the bear defense actions we knew.We yelled at the bear, hit pots hard,
and fired blank shotgun shells into the air.Sometimes loud noises like these will scare bears off.Not this
polar bear though-he just kept trying to tear down the fence with his massive paws.I radioed the camp
manager for help.He told me a helicopter was on its way,but it would be 30 minutes before it arrived.
Making the best of this close encounter,I took some pictures of the bear.
Elli and I feared the fence wouldn't last through 30 more minutes of the bear's punishment. The camp
manager suggested I use pepper spray. The spray burns the bears'eyes, but doesn't hurt them.SoI
approached our uninvited guest slowly and, through the fence, sprayed him in the face. With an angry roar,
the bear ran to the lake to wash his eyes.
A few minutes later, the bear headed back to our camp, then we
realized the spray had onty angered him even more, for he seemed much
fiercer this time and violently pushed the fence like mad.My heart raced
wildly, not knowing what to do.At this critical moment,Elli grabbed--
