Canadian violinist Adrian Anantawan just wants to make music. But when he performs, the audience aren’t just hearing the beautiful sounds from his violin; they’re hearing the sounds of inspiration.
Anantawan was born without most of his right forearm, a disability that could have prevented him from becoming a musician, but this hasn’t stopped him from following his dreams. “A lot of times, we let fear get in the way of trying anything,” said Anantawan. “For me, my story has always been a result of just trying something, being okay with failure, and then just seeing what the results are. In my case, it’s really just beautiful, expressive music.”
The road wasn’t that easy for Anantawan. In elementary school, his music teacher wanted him to play the trumpet (小号) but Anantawan wasn’t moved by the sound. He really wanted to play the violin. He was refused by many music teachers who could not think outside the box. After a lot of rejections, he finally found a teacher, Peggy Hills, and he learned to play with his left hand. “From the very first note that I was playing, I was really attracted to the sound and the connection of my body to the instrument,” Anantawan said.
Now, Anantawan is an associate professor at the Berklee College of Music and he founded the Music Inclusion Ensemble, a group of people with different disabilities. The goal of it is to make sure that people who have challenges feel like they have choices in finding ways to express themselves, like he did through music. “My duty is to use this platform in some way to show people what a person with a visible disability can do. And you never know who’ll be moved or inspired to be able to make a change in their lives,” he said.
4. What does Anantawan want to tell us in paragraph 2?
A. Interest is the best teacher.
B. Success requires a lot of practice.
C. Music can help people overcome difficulties.
D. Be brave and view failure as a stepping stone toward success.
5. What was the main challenge Anantawan faced when learning to play the violin?
A. He didn’t love its sound. B. He couldn’t afford a violin.
C. He couldn’t find a music teacher. D. He didn’t have enough practice time.
6. What is the purpose of the Music Inclusion Ensemble founded by Anantawan?
A. To improve his musical skills. B. To inspire the disabled.
C. To promote musical education. D. To draw more attention to disabled people.
7. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The Healing Power of Music
B. Adrian Anantawan: An Inspiration to Others
C. The Importance of Music Education in School
D. Living with a Disability: Challenges and Difficulties

Last year, 61 companies in the United Kingdom took part in the world’s largest test of a four-day working week. The results were so positive that 92% of the companies are planning to keep the new schedule.
61 UK companies agreed to try giving their workers a four-day working week. In return, they asked their workers to try to do as much in four days as they usually did in five.
Many different kinds of businesses took part, including online stores, computer technology companies, advertising companies, and even a fish restaurant. Some companies were small, while others had around 1,000 workers.
The companies found different ways of giving workers an extra day off. Most companies simply gave workers Fridays off. Others chose Mondays, or had different workers take different days off.
Some companies cut meetings, or made sure they were shorter. Others used technology to help workers get more done quickly. Some companies created a “focus time” so workers could work on just one thing without being interrupted.
The experiment ran for six months. The number of days that workers were out sick dropped by 65%. On average, 57% fewer people quit their jobs during the four-day working week trial. What’s more, the companies made more money — about 1.4% on average.
In general, workers said the four-day work week left them feeling less tired. About 71% said they felt less “burnt out” with their new work hours, and 39% said they felt less stressed. On average, 73% of the workers were more satisfied with the time they spent working.
Workers reported that the extra day off allowed them to do more of what they loved. Some people said they were able to get more training or take care of things at home. Others said they were able to spend more time with their families.
University of Cambridge professor Brendan Burchell, who helped run the study, said, “A four-day week means a better working life and family life for so many people.” At the end of the test, 92% of the companies involved said they planned to keep the four-day working week.
8. What do we know about the test?
A. Workers were faced with a reduction of their regular salary.
B. Workers were unable to complete their task.
C. Various types of companies participated.
D. All employees took days off on Fridays.
9. What is paragraph 5 mainly about?
A. How companies improved their working efficiency.
B. How companies created a relaxing atmosphere.
C. How workers benefited from new technology.
D. How companies carried out their rules.
10. What do the numbers in paragraph 6 show about the experiment?
A. Its main purpose. B. Its disadvantages.
C. Its great importance. D. Its good results for businesses.
11. What is Brendan Burchell’s attitude towards the four-day working week?
A. Unclear. B. Positive. C. Doubtful. D. Unsatisfied.

When a giant, dolphin-like animal was washed ashore on a beach in Otago, New Zealand, locals alerted the Department of Conservation (DOC). Upon arrival, the experts realized the 5-meter mammal (哺乳动物) was no dolphin. It was a spade-toothed whale.
Spade-toothed whales belong to the beaked whale family. These enigmatic mammals spend most of their time deep in the South Pacific Ocean. They have been seen by humans only six times and never alive. The limited knowledge about the species comes from lower jaw and tooth samples collected in 1874, as well as partial remains found decades later.
This is why the specimen (样本) that was washed ashore in Otago on July 4, 2024, caused such excitement. A team led by van Helden began a thorough examination of the animal. Swelling (肿胀) around the head and a broken jaw suggested the whale died from a head injury. The dissection (解剖) took place from December 2 to December 6, 2024. It showed the whale’s stomach contained trash. Seeing all these bottles, cans and plastic bags made scientists start worrying about the survival threats to marine life.
“The whale’s upper jaw featured small, undeveloped teeth. Previous research on this species shows that these teeth lost importance over time. This change occurred as the whale’s diet evolved to favor suction (吸) feeding. This species can easily adjust according to changes in food and environment in order to better survive,” van Helden said.
The team measured and recorded the weight of each organ. This will help them describe this species in detail and compare it to related ones. With the dissection complete, the scientists are now preparing several research papers to show additional details about the spade-toothed whale. Meanwhile, the whale’s jawbone and teeth have been given to the local Maori people, who consider the mammals a sacred treasure. Scientists will work on the rest of the bones, with 3D-printed replacements for the missing parts. They want to display the whole bones at a local museum for all to admire.
12. What does the underlined word ‘enigmatic’ in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Lovely. B. Powerful. C. Mysterious. D. Intelligent.
13. What is scientists’ major concern after the dissection?
A. Ocean pollution. B. Examination techniques.
C. Spade-toothed whales’ population. D. Research methods.
14. What does van Helden’s comment suggest about the whale?
A. It is difficult for scientists to observe this species.
B. It has strong ability to adapt to environmental changes.
C. It is mainly threatened by human hunting activities.
D. It depends on medical intervention to survive.
15. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. They will compare it with other whale species. B. They will keep the whale’s organs for future study.
C. They will search for more spade-toothed whales. D. They will rebuild the whale’s bones for display.

It was coming up to the annual English Carnival in our school. To enrich our school life and show our interest in English, our class planned to put on an English short play. Unexpectedly, I was selected to play one of the leading roles. However, I was an extremely shy and quiet student. I dared not speak English loudly in front of others, let alone perform on a formal stage. The moment I thought of standing in front of the whole school, my heart would pound wildly and my hands would tremble with nervousness.
I was trapped in great anxiety and even wanted to quit the role right away. I turned to my English teacher for help and poured out my inner worry. Sensing my nervousness, my teacher didn’t blame me. Instead, she comforted me patiently and encouraged me to seize this chance to challenge myself. She promised to spare her spare time to practice my lines and correct my pronunciation after school.
When I got home, I shared my stress with my mum. She listened to me gently and gave me warm encouragement. She told me that nobody was born brave and growth lay in stepping out of our comfort zone. If I stuck to practicing and believed in myself, I would surely make it.
Moved by my teacher and my mum, I finally made up my mind to take the challenge. In the following days, I devoted myself to full preparation. I recited my lines over and over again, adjusted my tone and facial expressions, and rehearsed repeatedly with my English teacher. Whenever I felt upset and wanted to give up, my teacher would inspire me, and my mum would comfort me and cheer me up at home.
Soon the day of the English Carnival arrived. Waiting backstage, I was surrounded by great tension. My legs turned weak and my mind went blank. I was seized by fear and even had the foolish idea of escaping at once.

【答案】4. D 5. C 6. B 7. B

【答案】12. C 13. A 14. B 15. D

As much as I love to cook and bake, I also enjoy eating out and can get lazy in the evenings when it’s time to make dinner, and that means I often spend a lot on groceries and even more on going to restaurants every week. ____16____
Cooking all my meals at home helped me save a significant amount of money over the one-month period. Usually, I’d spend at least $200 a week on food (including groceries and eating out), but during this challenge, I was only spending around $100 a week. ____17____
During the experiment, my mom and younger sister visited for a weekend. ____18____ We made homemade pasta, and finished our meal with chocolate-covered and cheesecake-filled strawberries. I was pleasantly surprised by how quickly our dishes came together and how fun it was to make them with my family.

【答案】基础版范文
Digital Growth in the Online World
The Internet offers teenagers rich learning resources, yet it also causes growth troubles. Many of us struggle with poor self-discipline when studying online. We easily get distracted by short videos and games, and cannot well distinguish false online information, which affects our study efficiency and correct judgment.
To fix these problems in daily study, I have developed practical online habits. During online courses, I put aside entertainment apps and focus fully on class content. After school, I set a fixed daily screen time for study use only. Moreover, when browsing learning information online, I cross-check content on official platforms instead of believing casual posts blindly.
The Internet is a useful tool for growth. With self-discipline and rational thinking, we can make full use of online resources and achieve healthy digital growth.
进阶版范文
Digital Growth in the Online World
The digital world provides great learning conveniences for teenagers, but it also brings hidden challenges. Online temptations often distract us from study, and the messy online information makes it hard for us to tell truth from falsehood, blocking our healthy digital growth.
To tackle these common teenage dilemmas, I stick to scientific self-management in my campus digital life. I strictly separate study and entertainment online: I never scroll short videos during preview and review sessions. When encountering mixed online study materials and opinions, I actively compare different sources and think critically to filter invalid and misleading information.
The Internet is neutral. Only by combining self-discipline with critical judgment can we turn digital resources into driving force for our progress.

第二节 (满分25分)
52. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

【答案】
Just as I was about to lose heart, my English teacher came to my side instantly. She patted me gently on the shoulder and told me all our hard practice would pay off. She advised me to take it easy and just act as we had rehearsed. Meanwhile, I caught sight of my mum sitting among the audience, wearing a reassuring smile and giving me a thumbs-up. Their support filled me with strength. I gathered all my courage and decided to face the challenge bravely.
Minutes later, I took a deep breath and walked onto the stage. Though I felt a little nervous at first, I soon calmed down and focused on my performance. I delivered my lines fluently and acted naturally. When the play ended, the hall burst into warm applause. Seeing my mum’s proud look and my teacher’s satisfied smile, I felt a strong sense of achievement. I finally overcame my shyness. This English Carnival let me understand that facing fear bravely is the best way to grow into a better self.
