TIP SHEET ON QUESTION WORDING
General Considerations
Don’t Reinvent the Wheel. If you are trying to measure an attitude, concept, or behavior, there’s a pretty good chance someone has done this before. In the course of your literature review, pay careful attention to how others are measuring the concept you want to measure. They may have already tested the reliability and validity of a measure. An identical question also makes it possible to evaluate data between different questionnaires.
Keep Your Questionnaire Short. Respondents are less likely to answer a long questionnaire than a short one, and often pay less attention to questionnaires which seem long, dull, or boring.
Keep Question Order in Mind.
●Start a questionnaire with an introduction.
●It’s usually best to start a survey with general questions that will be easy for a respondent to answer.
●It’s usually best to ask sensitive questions, including demographics (人口统计), near the end of the survey.
●If you are asking a series of similar questions, randomizing the order respondents hear them can improve your data.
General Rules for Writing Survey Questions
Avoid Vague or Imprecise Terms. Usually, it’s best to use terms that will have the same specific meaning to all respondents.
×How important is it that a candidate shares your values?
√How important is it that a candidate shares your religious values?
Provide Reference Frames. Make sure all respondents are answering questions about the same time and place.
×How often do you feel sad?
√How often have you felt sad during the past week?
Avoid Double-Barreled Questions. Questions should measure one thing. Double-barreled questions try to measure two (or more!) things.
×Do you think the president should lower taxes and spending?
Avoid Leading or Biased Language.
×Do you believe the US should immediately withdraw troops from the failed war in Iraq?
×Some say that we create the best software products in the world. Do you agree?
1. What is a benefit of using questions from previous surveys?
A. It helps keep the questionnaire short. B. It allows for cross-survey comparisons.
C. It eliminates the need for a literature review. D. It guarantees truthful answers from respondents.
2. Which question is most likely to appear near the end of a survey?
A. Where do you currently live? B. Why do you attend this workshop?
C. Which brands do you currently buy from? D. What is your top priority in working with us?
3. Which rule does the question “Was the product easy to find and did you buy it?” fail to follow?
A. Provide Reference Frames. B. Avoid Vague or Imprecise Terms.
C. Avoid Double-Barreled Questions. D. Avoid Leading or Biased Language.
根据General Considerations部分中“An identical question also makes it possible to evaluate data between different questionnaires.(完全相同的题目也使得评估不同问卷之间的数据成为可能)”可知,使用先前调查中的问题有利于进行跨调查的对比。
根据Keep Question Order in Mind部分中“It’s usually best to ask sensitive questions, including demographics, near the end of the survey.(通常最好将包括人口统计在内的敏感问题放在调查接近尾声时提问)”可知,“Where do you currently live?(你目前住在哪里?)”
根据Avoid Double-Barreled Questions部分中“Questions should measure one thing. Double-barreled questions try to measure two(or more!)things.(问题应当只测量一件事。双重问题试图同时测量两件甚至更多件事)”可知,“Was the product easy to find and did you buy it?(该产品是否容易找到,并且你购买了它吗?)”

When I was ten, I was suddenly confronted with the bitterness of moving from the only home I had ever known. My whole life, brief as it was, had been spent in that old house, gracefully touched with the laughter and tears of four generations. On the final day, I ran to the backyard, crying and trembling.
I felt a hand rest on my shoulder. It was my grandfather.
“How can I ever say goodbye to you and all my friends?” I sobbed, tears blurring my vision.
Staring off into the distance, Grandpa said softly, “Goodbye is too final and cold for friends. Our numerous ways of parting have one thing in common: dolor.”
He then gently led me to the front yard, where a huge red rosebush sat alone. “Billy, I planted these roses the day my first son was born,” he said, with tears welling up in his eyes and his voice becoming choked. “One day a terrible war erupted, claiming my son. He died in a village on the battlefield. I was forever heartbroken that my last word to him was goodbye.”
His eyes met mine. “Don’t ever say goodbye, Billy. Don’t give in to the sadness and loneliness of that word. Remember instead the joy when you first said hello to a friend. When you and your friends must part, reach deep within you and bring back that first hello.”
A year and a half later, my grandfather fell severely ill. Then the family was gathered and I returned to the old house. His eyes were closed and his breathing was slow and hard. “Hello, Grandpa,” I murmured. His eyes slowly opened. “Hello, my friend,” he said with a faint smile.
Hardly had I stood by his rosebush when an uncle approached to break the news of Grandpa’s passing. Grandpa’s words were lingering in my mind. Suddenly, and truly, I knew what he had meant about never saying goodbye — about refusing to give in to the sadness.
4. What is the main idea of paragraph 1?
A. The sorrow about departure. B. The comfort from grandfather.
C. The friendship among neighbors. D. The memories of four generations.
5. What does the underlined word “dolor” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Peace. B. Joy. C. Loneliness. D. Sadness.
6. What caused the grandfather’s lifelong regret?
A. Failing to protect his son. B. Planting the roses too late.
C. Adopting a cold parting way. D. Sending his son to the battlefield.
7. Which is the best title for the text?
A. Plant Roses for Love B. Never Say Goodbye
C. Say Hello to the Future D. Forget the Bitter Memories
A 5. D 6. C 7. B
根据第一段中的“When I was ten, I was suddenly confronted with the bitterness of moving from the only home I had ever known. My whole life, brief as it was, had been spent in that old house, gracefully touched with the laughter and tears of four generations. On the final day, I ran to the backyard, crying and trembling.(十岁那年,我突然要搬离这座我曾唯一熟悉的房子,满心都是苦涩。我的人生虽短暂,却全都在这栋老屋里度过,这里留存着四代人的欢笑与泪水。搬家的最后一天,我跑到后院,一边哭一边浑身发抖。)” 可知,第一段主要讲述作者搬家离别时的悲伤与不舍。
【5题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第四段中的 “Staring off into the distance, Grandpa said softly, “Goodbye is too final and cold for friends. Our numerous ways of parting have one thing in common: dolor.”(祖父望向远方轻声说道:“对于朋友而言,再见太过决绝与冰冷。我们无数的离别方式,都有一个共同点:dolor。”)”可知,前文提到“goodbye”冰冷,离别都会带来这种情绪,可推出dolor表示“悲伤”,sadness符合语境。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段中的“One day a terrible war erupted, claiming my son. He died in a village on the battlefield. I was forever heartbroken that my last word to him was goodbye.(一场惨烈的战争爆发,夺走了我儿子的生命。他牺牲在战场的一个村庄里。我最后对他说的话是再见,这让我终生心碎。)”可知,祖父终生遗憾的原因是他用冰冷的告别方式与离世的儿子道别。
【7题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第六段中的“Don’t ever say goodbye, Billy. Don’t give in to the sadness and loneliness of that word.(永远不要说再见,比利。不要向这个词带来的悲伤和孤独屈服。)”以及文末祖父离世时作者以问好回应的情节可知,全文围绕“永不轻言再见,铭记相逢美好、拒绝向悲伤妥协”展开,“Never Say Goodbye(永不言再见)”最贴合文章主旨,适合作为标题。

Stardust Solutions, an Israeli startup, is developing tiny particles (颗粒) which, if sprayed (喷洒) into the stratosphere (平流层) in sufficient number, might help cool the Earth. The idea of putting stuff into the stratosphere to lower temperatures is not new; it is the most discussed sunlight-blocking technology in solar geoengineering. The company’s novelty is that it claims to be developing special particles made of amorphous silica (非晶硅) and calcium carbonate (碳酸钙), which might do particularly well.
Most research on geoengineering assumes that the cooling would be done by imitating the effect of volcanic eruptions: releasing a sulphur (硫)-rich chemical into the stratosphere. But there is a problem. Admittedly, the amount of sulphate that would be used would be small relative to the total industrial emissions, and it would not be concentrated close to where people live. Nevertheless, “Spraying millions of tonnes of poisonous materials above the heads of their children for decades is something people wouldn’t feel comfortable about,” said Dr Yedvab, Stardust’s boss.
Amorphous silica is not in itself a health concern. But that does not mean the Stardust particles will necessarily be safer after years of weathering. “I think the work they’ve done is terrific,” says David Keith, a longtime leader in geoengineering research. “What I don’t buy is that it’s definitely safer.”
One might see this as a resistance to newcomers. But there’s something deeper at play.
Almost all geoengineering researchers say they conduct their work objectively, equally happy to discover good news or bad. Stardust, by contrast, is a commercial undertaking. “It’s not that there’s anything fundamentally wrong with for-profit companies,” said Dakota Gruener, leader of a solar-geoengineering research organization. “But when you have investors who are saying what we bet upon is that this will be used, it makes it hard to have that same level of objectivity.”
8. What distinguishes Stardust’s approach from previous research?
A. It uses special cooling materials. B. It guarantees effective performance.
C. It employs sun-blocking technology. D. It targets a different atmospheric layer.
9. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. Unsuccessful outcomes of past trials. B. Natural inspirations for the cooling effect.
C. Potential harm of the mainstream method. D. Theoretical possibility of the new approach.
10. What does the underlined word “this” in paragraph 4 refer to?
A. Opposition to new companies. B. Acknowledgement of Stardust’s work.
C. Skepticism over safety issues. D. Anxiety about financial costs.
11. What might be a consequence of Stardust’s commercial nature according to Dakota Gruener?
A. Less reliable research conclusions. B. Disturbed geoengineering markets.
C. Slower technological progress. D. Decreased non-profit funding.
A 9. C 10. C 11. A
根据第一段中“The company’s novelty is that it claims to be developing special particles made of amorphous silica and calcium carbonate, which might do particularly well.(该公司的创新之处在于,它声称正在开发由非晶硅和碳酸钙制成的特殊颗粒,其降温效果可能尤为出色)”可知,Stardust的方法区别于以往研究的地方在于使用了特殊的冷却材料。
根据第二段中““Spraying millions of tonnes of poisonous materials above the heads of their children for decades is something people wouldn’t feel comfortable about,” said Dr Yedvab, Stardust’s boss.(“几十年来,在孩子们头顶喷洒数百万吨有毒物质,人们对此会感到不安,”Stardust的老板耶德瓦布博士说)”可知,本段主要阐述主流的硫酸盐喷射方法存在的潜在危害。
根据第三段中“But that does not mean the Stardust particles will necessarily be safer after years of weathering.(但这并不意味着经过多年的风化后,Stardust的颗粒必然更安全)”以及第四段“One might see this as a resistance to newcomers. But there’s something deeper at play.(有人可能将此视为对新入局者的抵触。但背后还有更深层次的原因)”可知,画线词this指代的是前文提到的对安全性问题的怀疑。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“But when you have investors who are saying what we bet upon is that this will be used, it makes it hard to have that same level of objectivity.(但当投资者表示他们的赌注在于这项技术会被投入使用,就很难保持同等程度的客观性)”可知,Dakota Gruener认为Stardust的商业属性可能导致研究客观性下降,进而造成研究结论可靠性降低。
D
It may seem to go against common sense, but in a time of increased technological reliance, pursuing a liberal arts education has never been a better bet — because machines don’t actually have genuine intelligence. AI is merely an imitation of what makes us human — our unique abilities to lead, advocate, create, envision and innovate. A machine will never possess the emotional intelligence needed to manage a team, engage in intercultural communication, or resolve messy human conflicts that resist logic. Judgment, rooted in human experience, will never be AI’s strength.
In response to workforce demands, our liberal arts education has become more focused on career preparation. Most liberal arts colleges now offer students much exposure to data science, technology and business concepts, in addition to more conventional liberal arts fields of study.
Beyond that, a recent study by researchers at Ithaka S+R looked at the economic value of a “liberal” education as opposed to a “narrow” education. Their findings show that greater exposure to liberal arts core features, including a broad curriculum, experiential learning and engagement with diverse perspectives, is positively associated with greater academic achievement.
Research also supports the view that studying the arts, humanities and social sciences has value in the marketplace. A recent study revealed that 93% of employers rate written and oral communications, critical thinking and ethical decision-making as the most essential skills in job candidates. This is exactly what a broad liberal arts education delivers.
There is no one-size-fits-all education. In an AI-driven world, an education focused on gaining the knowledge and skills that are uniquely human is the best preparation for career longevity. After all, today’s cutting-edge technology may be outdated tomorrow — or performed by machines with more accuracy and efficiency than any human could ever have. But the ability to do what only humans can do is likely to be in high demand. Think of it this way: Career-ready skills will help you land a job, but only mastering the most human skills will prepare you to change the world.
12. What does the author imply about AI?
A. It fails in logical thinking. B. It lacks true human nature.
C. It values human experiences. D. It excels at resolving human conflicts.
13. What is the characteristic of current liberal arts education?
A. Replacement of traditional courses. B. High employment rates for graduates.
C. Equal emphasis on different disciplines. D. Integration of professional demands and traditions.
14. What can we learn from the studies in paragraphs 3 and 4?
A. Narrow education offers unclear economic returns.
B. Academic success lies in experiential learning.
C. Job candidates need a specialized education.
D. Liberal education yields practical rewards.
15. What is the author’s advice?
A. Mastering cutting-edge technological tools. B. Building irreplaceable human competence.
C. Performing tasks with higher accuracy. D. Gaining extensive knowledge.
B 13. D 14. D 15. B
根据第一段中的“AI is merely an imitation of what makes us human — our unique abilities to lead, advocate, create, envision and innovate.(人工智能仅仅是对人类独有特质的模仿——我们领导、倡导、创造、设想和创新的独特能力)”以及“A machine will never possess the emotional intelligence needed to manage a team, engage in intercultural communication, or resolve messy human conflicts that resist logic.(机器永远不会拥有管理团队、进行跨文化交流或解决难以用逻辑梳理的混乱人际冲突所需的情感智能)”可知,作者暗示AI缺乏真正的人性。
根据第二段中的“Most liberal arts colleges now offer students much exposure to data science, technology and business concepts, in addition to more conventional liberal arts fields of study.(如今,大多数文理学院为学生提供大量接触数据科学、技术和商业概念的机会,除此之外还有更多传统文理学习领域)”可知,当前博雅教育的特点是职业需求与传统的融合。
根据第三段中的“Their findings show that greater exposure to liberal arts core features, including a broad curriculum, experiential learning and engagement with diverse perspectives, is positively associated with greater academic achievement.(研究结果表明:更多接触博雅教育核心内容,涵盖广泛课程、实践学习、接触多元观点,与更优异的学业成绩呈正相关)”以及第四段中的“A recent study revealed that 93% of employers rate written and oral communications, critical thinking and ethical decision-making as the most essential skills in job candidates. This is exactly what a broad liberal arts education delivers.(近期一项研究显示,93% 的雇主认为书面与口头沟通能力、批判性思维以及道德决策能力是求职者最核心的必备素养,而这些恰恰是广博的人文通识教育所能培养出的能力)”可知,从研究中我们可以推断出博雅教育能够带来实际回报。
根据最后一段中的“In an AI-driven world, an education focused on gaining the knowledge and skills that are uniquely human is the best preparation for career longevity.(在AI驱动的世界中,专注于获得人类独有的知识和技能的教育是职业长久发展的最佳准备)”以及“Think of it this way: Career-ready skills will help you land a job, but only mastering the most human skills will prepare you to change the world.(可以这么理解:具备就业实用技能能帮你找到一份工作,但唯有掌握那些最具人类独有特质的技能,才能让你拥有改变世界的底气)”可知,作者的建议是培养不可替代的人类能力。

Many people take ___36___ for granted that they should start their exercise routines with some stretching on the spot. Most ___37___ (fit) experts now agree this kind of static stretching before exercise is not just counter-productive, but ___38___ (potential) harmful.
The traditional stretch, like when people bend over to touch their toes or stretch their legs on a fence, often ___39___ (cause) the muscles to tighten rather than relax — exactly the opposite of what is needed for physical activity. Experts say it is like extending a rubber band ___40___ its limit. When people stretch to the maximum, they are more likely to pull a muscle.
“We have developed this idea of static stretching at exactly the wrong time,” said Kieran O’sullivan, ___41___ exercise expert at the University of Limerick in Ireland, ___42___ has studied various types of stretching and their impact on athletes.
When you stretch before exercising, your body may think it’s at risk of being overstretched. It compensates by contracting and becoming tenser. That means you aren’t able to move as fast or as freely, ___43___ (make) you more likely to get hurt.
O’sullivan said stretching helps with ___44___ (flexible), but people should only do it when they aren’t about to exercise, like after a workout, ____45____ at the end of the day.
36. it 37. fitness
38. potentially
39. causes 40. to
41. an 42. who
43. making 44. flexibility
45. or
此处为固定句型take it for granted that...,it作形式宾语,真正的宾语为后面的that从句。
固定搭配extend...to its limit,意为“将……
此处连接两个并列的介词短语after a workout和at the end of the day,表选择关系,用连词or。

Dear Erik,
I’m writing to explain why few students speak actively in your oral class and offer some advice.
Most of us dare not open our mouths mainly for two reasons. First, we fear making grammar mistakes and being laughed at. Besides, we lack confidence in organizing English expressions quickly.
To change this, you can divide us into small groups for free talks, which will ease our pressure. Also, praise us timely even for simple sentences to build our confidence. We’ll surely become more willing to communicate.
Yours,
Li Hua

I sat in my minivan and watched the rain roll down the windshield It was a soggy (湿的) April day. My university was hosting a writer’s conference. And I wasn’t a writer. Well, I wanted to be. But that desire was a tiny dream, buried under the million things that created my life. “Okay, Shawnelle,” I said to myself. “You can do this.”
I’d tried to dress like a writer, even twisting my long hair into a sophisticated (精致的) knot. But I felt like a little girl playing dress up. I dress up. I was a mama of five. Maybe I should run away? But the registration fee was steep, and my friend had taken my boys for the day. I had to go in.
I watched people walk into the hall with confidence. True, I was scared. But there were always words washing through my thoughts and heart —words I had to set free. I grabbed my bag, opened the door, and walked toward a new chapter.
I was the proud mother of five sons. But there were times I wanted to reach out to people outside my home, to encourage and inspire others. The only thing I’d write was a yearly Christmas letter. The generous responses I received always made me feel fulfilled.
Inside, the hall buzzed with excitement. I chatted with people sitting next to me. Most of them were writing novels or had publishing credentials I felt self-conscious, like the words “Christmas Letter” were stamped across my forehead.
But when the keynote speaker spoke about the blessing of written words, something in my spirit broke free. A passion, bolder than my fear, began to pulse in my chest. Later, when we had the opportunity to spend fifteen minutes with one of the presenters, I knew I had to speak with Cecil. I sat in the meeting room, feeling my heartbeat hammer in my neck.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
“Did you bring anything you wrote with you?” Cecil asked.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I left the conference that evening armed with books, encouragement, goals, and hope.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
“Did you bring anything you wrote with you?” Cecil asked. I shook my head shyly and said that the only writing I had done was the yearly Christmas letters which I sent to relatives. I told him I loved pouring my true feelings into words even though I was just a mother without any publishing experience. I worried my simple daily stories were not worthy to be shown to professional writers. Cecil smiled warmly and told me that every sincere story deserved to be recorded. He advised me to keep writing whatever came to my mind and never look down on my own voice.
I left the conference that evening armed with books, encouragement, goals, and hope. On the rainy drive home, I thought about the words that Cecil had shared with me. The rain tapping on the window calmed my racing thoughts and cleared all my self-doubt. I made up my mind that I would spare time each day to write down the warm little stories from my family life. I realized that it didn’t matter whether I became a famous writer; what truly counted was that my words could bring warmth to people around me.

B

Many people take ___36___ for granted that they should start their exercise routines with some stretching on the spot. Most ___37___ (fit) experts now agree this kind of static stretching before exercise is not just counter-productive, but ___38___ (potential) harmful.

注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
“Did you bring anything you wrote with you?” Cecil asked.

I left the conference that evening armed with books, encouragement, goals, and hope.
