Cats can bring us a lot of fun. They can also help us learn about cultural relics (文物). This may sound funny, but that’s exactly what’s happening in the Palace Museum.
There are many cats living in the Palace Museum. One of them is Papa. You can see him in many photos of the museum. Papa has a special job: He helps people measure (测量) things in the museum!
When Papa sits down, he is about 30 cm tall. So, when people want to describe the size of something in the museum, they use Papa as a unit of measurement (测量单位). For example, if something is as high as Papa, they say it’s about “one Papa tall”. A special gold cup in the museum is 12.5 cm tall, so it’s about 0.42 Papa tall.
People really like this idea. Usually, cultural relics are inside glass boxes. As a result, many people don’t have a clear idea of their size. The “Papa unit” makes it easy for people to understand how big the things in the museum are.
The “Papa unit” makes learning about cultural relics more interesting. Tourists (游客) might spend more time looking at the cultural relics, trying to guess how many Papas tall they are.
