While getting into Harvard Law School is never easy for anyone, Rehan, whose single-parent family was poor, made it by himself.
Rehan lived through years of family struggles, poverty, and unfairness. He saw his father do several jobs to raise his brother and him with little rest and food. Rehan admitted he was pained and “hungry for more”. Life taught him the value of hard work and self-improvement at a very young age.
Those hard times tested the family as a whole. The more stressed Rehan was, the worse his grades became. His father told him to learn to relax by exercising. With a different purpose, he channeled his energy into sports, which he hoped would become his way out of a poor life.
However, things didn’t go that way. His father was in bad physical condition and then Rehan had to take a job at Bates Trucking & Trash Removal. He was smart and worked harder than any others. His co-workers spoke highly of him and tried to persuade him to go back to school. One of the company owners even helped him enroll (注册) at Bowie State University. Rehan earned a 4.0 grade point average and was able to transfer to the University of Maryland. But Rehan’s struggles still weren’t over. During his junior year at the University of Maryland, his father suffered a stroke (中风). Instead of dropping out of school, Rehan returned to Bates Trucking & Trash Removal in order to save his father. He got up each day at 3 am to work before class and doubled his learning plans. Finally, he graduated with good grades. Moreover, he began applying to Harvard Law School and made it.
With a sick father, a younger brother, a hard job, and a little time to learn, Rehan just had his own painful story to stand on. “Yes, Rehan has a quick mind, but what makes his achievement even more admirable is his courageous journey to this moment,” said his professor.
24. What does the author mean by saying “hungry for more” in Paragraph 2?

25. Why did Rehan go into sports?
A. He wished to change his life. B. He found his talent for sports.
C. He wanted to improve his mood. D. He tried to develop new hobbies.
26. What happened after Rehan went to work?
A. His father’s health gradually improved.
B. He was refused by Bowie State University.
C. He could continue his study with others’ help.
D. His co-workers found the job difficult for him.
27. Which of the following can best describe Rehan’s days in college?
A. Colourful but busy. B. Fresh and relaxing.

When children learn a musical instrument, one of the hardest things for a parent to do is encourage them to practice. But here’s something parents can use to give their kids a reason to try: A study has found that playing a musical instrument may lead to better brain health in later life. That might not be enough to encourage a child who has better things to do, but it’s good news for those who enjoy music.
Researchers from the UK looked at data from an online survey of more than 1,000 people over the age of 40 who had been asked to talk about their musical experiences and exposure (暴露) to music during their lives. They were also given tasks that tested their memory and skills in things like planning and focusing.
The study found that playing a musical instrument, especially the piano, was connected with better memory and thinking skills. And continuing to play an instrument into later life was found to have an even more salutary effect. Singing was related to better brain health in older age too. The research team suggested that the social factors that came with singing in a singing group may also have had an effect.
One of the researchers, Anne Corbett, who is a professor of dementia (痴呆) research at the University of Exeter, said that encouraging older adults to return to music later in life could be a useful public health strategy. She said, “There is much evidence for the benefit of music group activities for individuals with dementia.” And she suggested that such activities could be used to reduce the risk of developing dementia.
Of those who took part in the survey, 89% said they had played a musical instrument at some time in their lives, and about half still played one. Around seven out of ten said they had taken part in group singing.
28. Which is a benefit children learning musical instruments get according to the text?
A. Having better brain health in later life.
B. Encouraging them to do things well.
C. Getting courage to try new things.
D. Becoming famous.
29. What does the underlined word “salutary” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Sufficient. B. Positive. C. Absolute. D. Typical.
30. According to Anne, how could music benefit older adults?
A. It helps them stay physically active.
B. It provides a relaxing mind in their free time.
C. It lowers the chance of developing dementia.
D. It encourages them to sing more.
31. What is the author’s purpose of writing the text?
A. To encourage people to join in music activities.
B. To tell us what we should do in daily life.
C. To describe that singing is good for health.
D. To explain the importance of a hobby.

As psychologists (心理学家) have long recognised, we humans cope with negative things by employing psychological defences. These often take the form of self-serving biases (偏见), that is, we tend to owe other people’s successes to good luck, while seeing our own good results as a sign of born talent. Another example is the ‘better-than-average’ effect, in which case we think we’re better than most others at various skills from driving to maths.
Getting defensive when we’re criticised, or when we make a mistake, is yet another of these self-protective mechanisms (机制). As the politicians so often say: “mistakes were made, but not by me”.
So, when you give someone negative feedback (反馈) or you criticise them or their beliefs, you are — perhaps unconsciously — threatening their psychological defences. By forcing them to recognise how they’ve mistaken, you’re likely to trigger extremely uncomfortable social emotions, such as a shame, guilt or embarrassment, or scary thoughts of rejection or loss of status. A way for people to avoid these uncomfortable feelings and thoughts is to get defensive, to deny they did anything wrong, or to engage in the mental gymnastics needed to save face.
Support for the social and moral aspects of defensiveness comes from a study by psychologists at Australia’s University of Flinders in 2020. The researchers showed that volunteers’ defensiveness (about past mistakes or possible moral guilt) was strengthened if they’d just had an experience of being socially rejected — thus making them more mentally weak. Contrarily, the volunteers acted less defensively if they’d had an earlier opportunity to demonstrate their moral values, which would have made them feel more secure about their moral standing.
One practical point from all this is that when you’re giving negative feedback, it pays to consider the effect it may have on the other person’s self-confidence. Therefore, focus your criticism on what they did wrong, not on their personality or character. You can also take some of the sting out by concentrating on how their mistake can be fixed or how they can improve next time, that way they’re less likely to take things so personally.
32. Which of the following is an example of “using psychological defences”?
A. A teacher praises students’ progress to encourage them to keep learning.
B. When seeing a classmate win a competition, someone says he is just fortunate.
C. People usually feel confident and proud when they show their driving skills.
D. A student credits their excellent grade to hard work after studying for weeks.
33. What does the underlined word “trigger” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Control. B. Hide. C. Cause. D. Reduce.
34. What does the passage suggest doing when giving criticism?
A. Ignoring the ways to fix the mistakes made.
B. Concentrating on the person’s character flaws directly.
C. Pointing out only the mistakes without any suggestions.
D. Focusing on how to correct the mistakes.
35. What is the text mainly about?
A. Psychological Defences and How to Deal with Them.
B. The “Better-than-average” Effect in Daily Life.
C. Negative Feedback and Its Harm to People.
D. The Importance of Self-confidence in Society.

多余选项。
Take a bottle of soda, and shake it really hard. Gas will form inside, causing a build-up of pressure. Twist the cap off. Pressure will be released from the bottle, and soda will shoot everywhere.
36 Pressure builds up inside a volcano as gas forms in magma (岩浆), which is hot liquid rock beneath the surface of the earth. Gas bubbles in the volcano need to escape. When a volcano erupts, magma is pushed up through the opening with great force. When magma reaches the earth’s surface, it’s called lava (熔岩).
Some volcanic eruptions are explosive. Lava shoots into the sky. Gas and hot pieces of rock and ash are also released. The intensity of an eruption depends on a few factors. One is the magma’s temperature. Another is the magma’s thickness. 37
Volcanic eruptions can cause other natural disasters. These include landslides, mudslides, earthquakes and tsunamis. Volcanoes can be destructive. 38 The Hawaiian Islands were created by the eruptions of large low-lying volcanoes which are made up of layers of hardened lava.
39 Ash from volcanoes adds helpful minerals to soil. This helps plants grow strong Healthy plants produce oxygen for humans and animals to breathe. Volcanoes also remove heat from the earth’s interior (内部), which helps keep our planet cool.
In recent years, a new benefit of volcanoes has surfaced. 40 Their measures involve using the heat beneath the earth’s surface to produce electricity.
Volcanoes may be unpredictable. However, as we learn more about how they work, they will become even more important to life on the earth.
A. However, they can also create new land.
B. Volcanoes can become more dangerous.
C. A volcanic eruption works much the same way.
D. Scientists are using volcanoes to help power cities.
E. The amount of gas trapped inside is also an important one.

When Jenny was in high school, she took a part-time job at a grocery store near the school. She was smart and nice while the boss Elsie and other workers there were friendly. As a result, Jenny made friends with them. After Jenny graduated, she gave up her part-time job, said goodbye to her friends, and went to a city far away to go to college, not knowing these friends would do her a big favor in the future.
Months later after Jenny was in college, the Christmas holiday approached. She applied herself to the final exams. Jenny’s eyes were aching from lack of sleep. She tried to rub (擦) the tiredness from her eyes, but failed. So she stood and stretched and looked through the window to watch the first snow of the season.
As she stared out of the window of her dorm, memories of once happily staying with her family members for the holiday hit her mind.
Feeling sad, Jenny sat back down at her desk and tried to focus on her studies. In just seven more days, the final exams would be over and all the students in the freshman college dorm would be going home except her. She would be moving temporarily to another dorm for the
Christmas break. Instead of enjoying homemade pies, cookies and roast turkey together with her family, Jenny would be eating alone in the school dining hall. It was not a prospect she looked forward to.
Jenny had no choice. She was a student from Pennsylvania attending college in Utah and her family of ten couldn’t afford to pay for her ticket home. She was able to attend college because of the several scholarships she had got.
Unable to focus her mind, Jenny stared back at the white snow dancing in the air. This would be her first Christmas away from home.
