第二节 61. (One possible version:)
My fellow students,
It’s my great honor to stand here and give a speech.
Nowadays, most of us spend too much time on mobile phones. Many students even play with phones in class or stay up late scrolling through videos. This bad habit not only takes up our study time, but also does great harm to our health. More and more classmates have poor eyesight and feel tired easily because of long screen time.
To change this situation, I have some advice for us. First, try to put down phones when studying and finish school tasks first. Second, take regular breaks to look at green plants and relax our eyes. Third, take more outdoor sports and hang out with friends instead of chatting online all day. What’s more, we can set fixed time to use phones and never use them before going to bed.
Small changes make big differences. Let’s stay away from too much screen time, protect our eyesight and develop healthy living habits. Let’s enjoy a happier and better life together!
Thank you for listening!

Hiking with my husband — a seasoned outdoorsman and former Eagle Scout — I’ve gotten used to spotting all kinds of strange things in the 16 . Over time, I’ve learned that pile of rocks, chalk arrows, hand-painted 17 , colored ribbons and plastic ties aren’t just random litter (垃圾). They’re outdoor shorthand, little 18 meant to communicate something important. So when we 19 a tree striped (有条纹的) with bright purple paint, I didn’t 20 it was modern art or my long-hoped-for doorway to a fairy place. I figured it meant something more 21 . And I was right.
“We recently painted our fence 22 that face public lands purple,” says Robert Miller, a rancher (农场主) in Texas. “It was easier and cheaper than 23 metal signs that people would just take down or ignore or would get destroyed by weather.”
So what does a purple fence mean?
Miller and the other purple-painters are sending a 24 message: Keep out. That’s right — if you see a fence post, tree trunk or random vertical surface 25 in purple paint, that purple stripe is the landowner’s way of saying “no trespassing (非请莫入).”
Putting up some kind of “no trespassing” indication on your 26 is a legal requirement in many U.S. states, so Miller says he chose the convenience, 27 and efficiency of purple paint. “It also works better for people who can’t read or 28 they can’t read,” Miller says, 29 that they just call it “no-trespassing purple.” (When I googled it, I found a wide 30 of paint labeled “no-hunting purple,” which is the same thing.)
Just like the “no trespassing” signs, the purple paint is legally enforceable — you can get 31 for trespassing, even if you don’t know what it means. “Not 32 people know about this. I’ve had to explain it to people coming 33 my property to fish or four-wheel,” Miller says. “I try to be nice about it, but after a while it gets old.”
As of now, at least 22 states have officially 34 some version of the purple paint law. But not every state 35 purple as the “keep out” paint color, which adds to the confusion. Idaho and Montana, for instance, use orange.

A lone coyote (郊狼) shocked biologists and others when it paddled (涉水) its way to remote Alcatraz Island earlier this year.
At the time, biologists guessed the coyote swam from San Francisco, which is a little over 1 mile (1.6 kilometers) from Alcatraz Island. But it turns out the male coyote actually made an even longer swim from nearby Angel Island, 2 miles (3.2 kilometers) away.
“Our working assumption (假设) was that the coyote made the swim from San Francisco because it is a significantly shorter distance. We couldn’t help being impressed by his accomplishment in making it to Alcatraz,” National Park Service wildlife ecologist Bill Merkle said in a news release Monday titled “Alcatraz Coyote Wasn’t a City Boy After All.”
“Coyotes are known to be resilient (有承受力的) and adaptable, and he certainly demonstrated those qualities,” he said.
Camilla Fox, founder and executive director of nonprofit Project Coyote, said the coyote likely departed its home base in search of a mate or new territory to defend. She said coyotes, like wolves, do swim, although it’s incredibly rare for humans to spot one doing so.
“We have never, ever heard such a story of a coyote making such a long journey in a pretty challenging ocean current,” she said.
Video from early January shows the coyote paddling in the chilly San Francisco Bay and then struggling to get onto the rocky island. It was followed by a Jan. 24 visitor sighting and photographs by Rebecca Husson, who was in town for a cousin’s wedding.
She and her family were surprised to spot the coyote on their morning tour of Alcatraz Island.
“He looked like a drowned rat when he ended up on the island, and when we saw him he looked healthy and so beautiful. He looked like he had been eating well,” she told The Associated Press on Tuesday.
Biologists found fresh coyote tracks and scat (粪便), which they sent to the University of California, Davis, for DNA analysis. Officials were shocked to learn the swimmer was part of the coyote population on Angel Island.
The park service was prepared to capture and relocate the coyote because of Alcatraz’s role as a seabird nesting habitat. But he has never again been spotted or caught on recording devices and there is no evidence the coyote is still on the island.
41. What was biologists’ initial assumption about the coyote’s origin before DNA analysis?
A. It swam from Angel Island, 2 miles away.
B. It came from a nearby seabird nesting habitat.
C. It swam from San Francisco, 1.2 miles away.
D. It was originally from a university research center.
42. What can we infer about this long-distance swimming behavior of the coyote?
A. It is quite common among wild coyotes.
B. It is seldom seen and extremely unusual.
C. Coyotes only do it to look for enough food.
D. Most coyotes are unable to finish it.
43. What can be inferred from Rebecca Husson’s description of the coyote?
A. The coyote looked unhealthy and had difficulty finding food.
B. The coyote left the island shortly after being photographed.
C. The coyote was originally a pet that escaped from the city.
D. The coyote had adapted well after arriving on the island.
44. What is the author’s purpose in writing this passage?
A. To warn visitors about coyotes on Alcatraz Island.
B. To describe a surprising discovery about a coyote’s journey.
C. To compare coyote behavior with that of wolves.
D. To advertise Alcatraz Island as a wildlife tourism spot.
45. What is the main idea of the last paragraph?
A. Measures were planned for the coyote but it disappeared.
B. Scientists studied coyote tracks to know its diet.
C. Alcatraz Island is a perfect home for seabirds.
D. People found many clear photos of the coyote later.

Sandstorms have been a major disaster for many Asian countries for centuries. Scientists have tried many ways to solve this problem and in China, a mass campaign has been started to help solve it.
Sandstorms are strong, dry winds that carry sand. They are often so thick that you cannot see the sun, and the wind is sometimes strong enough to move sand dunes (沙丘). The four main places in the world where there are sandstorms are Central Asia, North America, Central Africa and Australia. Ren Jianbo, from Inner Mongolia described a terrible sandstorm he experienced as a child in the desert. “To have been caught in a sandstorm was a terrible experience,” he said. “There was nothing to be done. It was the most frightening and the most dangerous situation I’ve ever been in. You just had to hope you’d survive. I thought I was going to disappear under the sand.”
Northwest China is part of the sandstorm centre in Central Asia. Sandstorms begin in desert areas. Sandstorms in China appear to have increased in recent years as a result of “desertification”. This is a process that happens when land becomes desert because of climate changes and because people cut down trees and dig up grass.
Sandstorms sometimes affect Beijing. Citizens wake up to an orange sky and strong winds that cover the city in a thick, brown-yellow dust. The storms sometimes continue all day and traffic moves very slowly because the thick dust makes it difficult to see.
The Chinese Central Weather Station can forecast a sandstorm some weeks before it arrives in Beijing, but the strength of the storm sometimes surprises people. When a sandstorm arrives in the city, weather experts advise people not to go out. Huang Xiaomei, who lives in Beijing says, “To be cycling in a sandstorm is frightening. The winds are very strong. It’s difficult to breathe and the dust makes me ill. So if you want to go out, you’d better wear a mask.”
The desert is only 250 kilometres away to the west of Beijing. To prevent it coming nearer, the government is planting trees. Already the government has planted more than 30 billion trees and plans to continue planting for the next five years.
46. What is the author’s purpose of mentioning Ren Jianbo’s childhood experience in Paragraph 2?
A. To show how sandstorms affect traffic in cities.
B. To explain the scientific causes of desertification.
C. To illustrate the terrifying and dangerous nature of sandstorms.
D. To compare sandstorms in China with those in Australia.
47. According to the passage, what has led to the increase of sandstorms in China in recent years?
A. Stronger winds blowing from Central Africa.
B. Climate changes and human activities like cutting trees.
C. The government’s decision to plant more trees.
D. The movement of sand dunes toward northwest China.
48. What can be inferred from Paragraph 4 about the impact of sandstorms on Beijing?
A. They turn the sky orange but do not bring dust.
B. They arrive only in the morning and disappear by noon.
C. They rarely affect the daily lives of Beijing citizens.
D. They cause traffic to move slowly due to poor visibility.
49. When a sandstorm arrives in Beijing, weather experts suggest that people ______.
A. ride bicycles carefully with masks on B. stay indoors and avoid going outside
C. plant more trees to block the dust D. move to the desert areas for safety
50. What is the author’s purpose in writing the last paragraph?
A. To warn readers about the dangers of desertification.
B. To criticize the government for not doing enough.
C. To describe how the government is trying to stop the desert.
D. To compare Beijing’s weather with Inner Mongolia’s.
D
Chemical pesticides (农药) and artificial fertilisers (化肥) have been in widespread use in farming since the middle of the 20th century. When they were first introduced, many farmers welcomed them as a great way to fight crop disease and increase production. Over time, however, what some scientists have found is that their long-term use can sometimes harm both the land and people’s health.
For example, pesticides can damage the land by killing not only harmful bacteria and insects, but also helpful ones. In addition, these chemicals can stay in the soil and underground water sources for a long time. This affects the crops grown on the land and, in turn, the animals and humans who digest them. Many people worry that these chemicals may make them ill and even cause cancer. In fact, some pesticides like DDT have been prohibited in most countries because of the damage they cause to people and the environment. As for chemical fertilisers, crops grown with them usually grow too fast to be rich in nutrition. They may look beautiful on the outside, but inside there is usually more water than essential minerals, and they often have less flavour as well.
As an alternative, some farmers have switched to organic farming, and many customers have turned to organic food when they shop at the local grocery. Organic farming is simply farming without using any chemicals. Organic farmers focus on keeping their soil rich and free of disease through natural means. For example, many organic farmers use natural waste from animals as fertiliser. This makes the soil in their fields richer in minerals. It also keeps the air, soil, water, and crops free of chemicals.
Organic farmers also use many other methods to produce rich soil. They often change the kind of crop grown in each field every year. For instance, they may grow corn or wheat in a field one year, and then grow beans there the next. Why different crops are grown is because they put important minerals back into the ground, making it ready for the next batch of crops. Organic farmers also plant diverse crops that use different depths of soil to help keep it rich. For example, peanuts grow on the ground’s surface, but many other vegetables put down deep roots. The goal of using different organic farming methods is to grow good food while avoiding damage to the environment or to people’s health.
Some people would prefer to stop the use of man-made chemicals in agriculture entirely. What keeps them from doing so is the fact that chemical farming serves the high demand for food around the world. Organic farming is nowhere near able to meet that need. Therefore, there is still a long way to find a suitable solution that puts sufficient food on the dinner table while keeping people and the environment as healthy as possible.
51. What is the main purpose of Paragraph 1?
A. To introduce the history of chemical pesticides and fertilisers.
B. To argue that all farmers should stop using chemicals.
C. To explain how to increase crop production effectively.
D. To describe the process of making artificial fertilisers.
52. What can we infer about chemical pesticides from Paragraph 2?
A. They only kill harmful insects and bacteria in farmland.
B. Their chemical remains will disappear in a short time.
C. Some of them are banned for environmental and health risks.
D. They help crops gain more nutrition and better taste.
53. What message does Paragraph 3 convey?
A. Organic food is more expensive than chemically grown food.
B. Organic farming cannot keep soil rich or disease-free.
C. Farmers prefer chemical farming for its convenience.
D. Organic farming avoids chemicals to protect soil and health.
54. What does the author think is the biggest problem of organic farming?
A. It causes huge waste of land and water resources.
B. Its food is more expensive than chemical farm food.
C. Its farming methods are too complex to learn.
D. It fails to satisfy the global food demand.
55. What could be the best title for the passage?
A. The History of Pesticides and Fertiliser Use
B. How to Grow Crops without Any Water

Late one night a guy is speeding down the empty road. A policeman sees him go flying past so chases him and pulls him over. The policeman goes up to the car and when the man rolls down the window, he asks, “Are you aware of how fast you were going, sir?”
The man replies, “Yes I am. I’m trying to escape a robbery (抢劫) I got involved in.”
The policeman looks at him disbelievingly and asks him, “Were you the one being robbed, sir?”
The man casually replies, “Oh no, I was the one who committed the robbery. I was escaping.”
The policeman is shocked and surprised that the man has admitted this so freely. He says, “So you’re telling me you were speeding…AND committed a robbery?”
“Oh yes,” replies the man calmly. “I have all the loot (赃物) in the back.”
The policeman is now starting to get angry and says, “Sir, I’m afraid you have to come with me,” as he reaches into the window to take the car keys out of the ignition (点火开关).
The man shouts, “Don’t do that! I’m afraid that you’ll find the gun in my glove compartment!” At this the policeman pulls his hand out of the window and says, “Wait here” as he returns to his car and calls for backup (支援).
Soon there are cars, policemen and helicopters all over, everywhere you look. The man is quickly dragged out of his car, handcuffed and taken towards a police car.
However, just before he is put in the car and taken away a policeman walks up to him and says, while pointing at the policeman that pulled him over, “Sir, this officer tells us that you had committed a robbery, had stolen loot in the trunk of your car, and had a loaded gun in your glove compartment. However, we didn’t find any of these things in your car.”
The man replies, “Yeah, and I bet that liar said I was speeding too!”
