English Market Towns to Visit in the UK
English market towns come in many shapes and sizes. Each has a personality shaped by the goods and services produced and traded for centuries. But each town has more to do than shop.
Hereford, Herefordshire
Hereford has remained a lively market town since 1189. Skirting the town square, you’ll find lovely shops, eateries, and the Black and White House Museum. The Hereford Cathedral is the most impressive building in town. It’s also home to an ancient library. One of the four original copies of the Magna Carta is displayed there.
Ludlow, Shropshire
Ludlow is known as the Foodie Center of England. Butcher shops, greengrocers, bakeries, and cheese shops line the town square. Bordering the square, the Ludlow Castle is a “must explore” medieval stronghold. The three-day Ludlow Food Festival is held each September.
Shrewsbury, Shropshire
Getting to Shrewsbury Town Center from London is challenging but worth the anxiety. The River Severn has a significant turn through town, almost making an island of Shrewsbury Town Center. The shape creates a perfect market where goods could be shipped and received using the river as a highway. Flowers are everywhere-hanging baskets, window boxes, and planters-just what you imagine in an attractive English market town.
Mevagissey, Cornwall
Even if you haven’t been to the small fishing village Mevagissey, you’ve probably seen it in a movie or British TV show. The working harbor (港口) took shape in 1774. Fishermen go out to sea daily and sell their fish in harbor-side markets. Don’t leave the harbor without a traditional Cornish pie. It’s delicious.

Being busy is my thing. It has been for years, and even though everyone kept telling me to slow down, I refused. Running from deadline to deadline, I always promised my family that as soon as I got through this next month I’d slow down. I never did and in the end it turns out that the universe decided to do it for me.
It started out as a normal Friday night in early January 2025. I took a trip to the shop, grabbed what I needed, paid, and was walking to my car when I fell onto my tailbone. At that moment, my life changed. I broke my back. I was sent to the nearby hospital at once, where I met Tracy, a beautiful old woman in her late 90s, in the last days of her life. She was on her deathbed while I was on my sick bed. There was nothing we could do but offer each other words of comfort. We talked a lot and she said: “Don’t be sad for me, my dear friend. I had a wonderful life because that’s what I chose. Life is what you make it.” I forced a smile and we talked a little more.
When the nurses came to take her away, I knew it was the last time I was going to see her alive. Watching through tears as she was wheeled away, I decided: enough was enough. I wasn’t going to feel sorry for myself for a second longer. Yes, I broke my back and life looked different now, but so what? Build a bridge and get over it. Anyway, I was still breathing. So I concentrated on the things I could control. I did everything I physically could to try and heal my broken body.
Guess what? I survived and not just survived, I thrived (蓬勃发展). I can work a few hours a day now, and I’m stronger than I think I am. Health and happiness are worth fighting for, even if who you are fighting is yourself. I’m quite sure that positivity heals more than medicine ever did. I sometimes think of that little old lady. She was right, life is what you make it.

B. A sudden slip near her car in the supermarket parking lot.

43. We can infer from the passage that Tracy __________.
A. had no family members visiting her in her final days
B. was frightened of death and often cried in the hospital
C. intentionally inspired the author to take control of her life
D. felt regretful about her life choices despite her positive words
44. The underlined phrase “Build a bridge and get over it” in Paragraph 3 probably means __________
A. to actively confront and overcome difficulties
B. to literally construct a bridge to cross obstacles
C. to find a way to escape from difficult situations
D. to seek help from others when facing challenges
45. What best describes the author’s attitude after her recovery?

The world’s coolest library with no printed books has been built in Antarctica. Named the Ice Memory Sanctuary, it is founded by an international scientific group. It is the first permanent site to store mountain ice cores, built deep inside Antarctic ice.
Ice cores are long ice cylinders (圆柱体) collected from glaciers. What makes the sanctuary special is its natural cooling system. It keeps ice cores at about -50℃ without electric refrigeration. This special design saves energy and avoids possible risks such as power failures.
Considered natural history books of the Earth, ice cores have layers just like tree rings, recording thousands of years of snowfall. Inside the ice are tiny particles (颗粒) like dust and sea salt, which help researchers study ancient volcanoes, atmospheric conditions and ecosystems. Air bubbles (气泡) trapped in the ice also allow scientists to learn about past climates and predict future environmental changes.
Ice cores can also throw light on human history. A 2025 Danish study discovered lead pollution left by ancient silver mining in ice cores. The pollution was believed to affect ancient Romans’ IQ and even quickened the fall of the Roman Empire.
WMO officials stress ice cores are extremely important for climate research. However, global ice loss is becoming serious. Large quantities of ice melt every year. By 2100, nearly half of the world’s glaciers may disappear forever, taking with them those indispensable records of Earth and human history.
46. What makes the Ice Memory Sanctuary different from traditional storage places?
A. It is constructed on mountain glaciers.
B. It preserves ice cores in a natural low-temperature way.
C. It is supported financially by world organizations.
D. It provides open access to global researchers.
47. Why does the author mention “tree rings” in Paragraph 3?
A. To explain how ice layers are formed.
B. To clarify the importance of ice preservation.
C. To make a contrast between different life records.
D. To help readers understand ice cores’ record function.
48. What can be inferred about the Danish study?
A. It solved a long-standing mystery of Rome’s fall.
B. It showed pollution’s hidden influence on human history.
C. It proved the poor medical condition in ancient Rome.
D. It was based on data of modern lead pollution cases.
49. What does the underlined word “indispensable” in Paragraph 5 most probably mean?
A. Unique and impossible to get back.
B. Detailed and easy to recognize.
C. Limited and difficult to protect.
D. Stable and safe to keep.
50. What is the main purpose of the text?
A. To stress the urgency of glacier protection.
B. To introduce a new way of climate research.
C. To present a special ice-core storage project.
D. To show the link between pollution and civilization.

Yang Changqin has turned her deep love for bamboo weaving into a lifelong career. The 36-year-old Guizhou native is a national master of Chishui bamboo weaving, founder of her own brand and a deputy (代理人) to the 14th National People’s Congress.
Born in Guizhou, Yang was fond of handicrafts as a child. At around 18, she quit her stable kindergarten teaching job to learn traditional bamboo weaving as an apprentice (学徒). Her mother said she was a determined person who never gave up easily.
Bamboo weaving is an ancient intangible cultural heritage (非遗), which can turn soft bamboo into daily goods and artworks. When learning the craft at first, she often hurt her hands in practice. Still, she stuck to it and gradually mastered professional skills.
Instead of being trapped in old traditions, Yang chose to make changes. She created new 3D weaving skills and learned modern design in art schools to mix classic craftsmanship with new styles. In 2012, she set up her own brand “Jizhu”. Its products like bamboo paintings, handbags and lamps soon won great popularity.
To let the ancient craft fit modern life, Yang kept improving herself. She updated her designs, combined traditional skills with modern beauty, and learned digital tools to promote sales online and through live streaming.
Yang’s brand has brought great benefits to her hometown. It provides more jobs for local villagers and raises their income, making bamboo weaving a new engine for rural development. She also calls on young people to inherit intangible cultural heritage bravely.
As she puts it, passion helps people beat difficulties. Her experience proves that determination and innovation can make traditional craftsmanship shine with new life.

2. We should never give up our dreams whatever difficult __________ we meet.
A. customs B. comments C. contents D. circumstances
【答案】D
【解析】
【详解】句意:无论遇到什么困难的情况,我们都不应该放弃我们的梦想。A. customs风俗,习惯;B. comments评论;C. contents内容;D. circumstances情况,环境。根据前文“whatever difficult(无论多么困难的)”可推断,这里指的是在追梦过程中遇到的困难“情况/环境”。
3. Not able to afford a house of their own, the young couple rented __________ not far away from their company.
A. one B. it C. this D. that
【答案】A

A. To have spent B. Having spent C. Spending D. Spend
9. No one saw Mike leave the dorm last night, so he __________ slipped out when all of us fell asleep, but nobody can confirm it.
A. should have B. could have C. may have D. might have
【答案】D

English Market Towns to Visit in the UK
English market towns come in many shapes and sizes. Each has a personality shaped by the goods and services produced and traded for centuries. But each town has more to do than shop.
Hereford, Herefordshire
Hereford has remained a lively market town since 1189. Skirting the town square, you’ll find lovely shops, eateries, and the Black and White House Museum. The Hereford Cathedral is the most impressive building in town. It’s also home to an ancient library. One of the four original copies of the Magna Carta is displayed there.
Ludlow, Shropshire

B

A. A fall during her morning jog to the local shop.

A. had no family members visiting her in her final days
B. was frightened of death and often cried in the hospital

C

阅读下面短文,并根据短文内容完成下列各题。

【答案】The virtue I value most
To lead a meaningful life, we should cherish numerous virtues like kindness, wisdom, courage and justice. Among them, honesty stands out as the one I value most.
As the old saying goes, “Honesty is the best policy” — a truth that never fades. As a core socialist value, honesty serves as the solid foundation for all human relationships. Without it, our society would be swamped with lies and shoddy goods. Consequently, trust would vanish, and no goals could ever be accomplished.
Dear fellow students, let’s always hold fast to honesty. An honest individual gains true friendship; an honest enterprise earns customers’ trust; an honest nation wins respect across the globe. Honesty, after all, is the key to building a better world for everyone.
