Hidden in the quiet countryside of northwest England lies a very unusual ski slope ()It
is only 140 meters long and 10 meters wide. There is no snow-just plastic mats with rough
bristles ()Grass grows through the surface in some places.Sheep sometimes wander across
the slope during training. This is Pendle Ski Club, and people often describe it with one word:
humble.
But this modest slope has produced Britain's greatest skier.Dave Ryding, now 39,started
skiing here at age six.He trained on the plastic surface well into his teens.Today,he is the only
British winner in the nearly 60-year history of the Alpine Skiing World Cup.His victory came in
Kitzbuehel,Austria-one of the world's most challenging races. As he headed to his final
Olympics in Milan Cortina,he was a potential medal winner.
Britain gets only limited snowfall each year. There are 67 ski slopes in the country, but most
are dry slopes or indoor snow centers. The odds of producing a world-class skier were very low.
Ryding remembers training in sweatpants and getting fiiction burns when he fell.Summer practice
sessions were sometimes interrupted by sheep crossing the hill.
Strangely, the short slope-just 12 seconds from top to bottom -became an advantage.
Ryding learned to start explosively. On flat race sections,he is often faster than skiers from
traditional winter sports countries like Sweden or Norway.John Holmes,an instructor at the club,
explained,"People who start on the bristles learn the true technique-putting weight on the
outside ski, setting a good edge, and shaping the turn.It builds the fundamentals."
Today,Pendle Ski Club has 600 members, from children to skiers in their 70s.A large Union
Jack flag hangs in the clubhouse with Ryding's nickname,"Rocket."Kids gather every Sunday
morning to watch him race on TV."He started here and made it to the Olympics,"said 16-year-old
Jayden Cuttriss."It shows it's possible for anyone."
24.What do we know about Pendle Ski Club's slope?
A.It is fit for long skiing races.
B.It is large and well-equipped.
C.It has no snow but plastic mats.
D.It is a common snow slope in Britain.
25.What kind of person is Dave Ryding?
A.Hard-working.
B.Generous.
C.Careless.
D.Humorous.
26.What does the author want to indicate by mentioning skiers from Sweden and Norway?
A.Britain's poor snow conditions.
B.Different ways of skiing training.
C.Famous winter sports countries.
D.Ryding's speed advantage in races.
27.What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.Jayden wants to take Dave Ryding's place.
B.Ryding sets a good example for young skiers
C.All club members are under twenty years old.

Most of us have some gut feelings"that we can't explain. For example, when we hunt for a
new house,we might suddenly like it a lot or dislike it right away.Or when we meet new people,
we make instant judgements on them without careful thought.Research done by Leeds University
shows that these feelings,or intuitions, are real and we should take them seriously.
According to the research, intuition is the result of the way our brains store, process and
obtain information on a subconscious(潜意识的)level,.and so is a real psychological
phenomenon that needs further study to help us unlock its potential.
There are many cases where intuition prevented major disasters, and cases of remarkable
recoveries when doctors followed their gut feelings.Yet,science has historically questioned the
concept of intuition, labelling it as "anti-scientific".Through analysis of a wide range of research
papers examining the phenomenon, researchers have concluded that intuition is the brain drawing
on past experiences and external cues to decide but one that happens so fast that the reaction
is on a non-conscious level. All we're aware of is a general feeling that something is night or
wrong.
Researchers believe that people usually experience true intuition when they are under severe
time pressure or in a situation of information overload or acute danger, where conscious analysis
of the situation may be difficult or impossible. They cite a Formula One driver, who once braked
suddenly before a sharp U-turn without knowing why. This automatic reaction saved him from
crashing into a pile of cars ahead, likely preventing a fatal accident.Though he couldn't explain
his urge to stop,it overrode his competitive drive to win. After psychologists showed the driver a
video replay,he realized at that very moment the crowd wasn't cheering as usual they stood
frozen, staring in the opposite direction as he approached the U-turn.That was the cue.He didn't
consciously process this, but he knew something was wrong and stopped in time.
Researchers believe that all intuitive experiences are based on the automatic evaluation of
such internal and external cues. They say that we clearly need both conscious and non-conscious
thought processes, but neither is superior to the other.
28.What does the research from Leeds University indicate?
A.Gut feelings are not reliable in daily life.
B.People ought to trust their intuitive feelings.
C.Intuition is just a random psychological response
D.Intuitive responses often lead to wrong decisions.
29.According to Paragraph 3,what can we infer about intuition?
A.Intuition involves subconscious processing of external cues.
B.Intuition only works in life-threatening situations.
C.Intuition relies on conscious analysis of visible dangers
D.Intuition is a random guess with no logical basis.
30.Which of the following real-life situations best illustrates the application of intuition?
A.A shopper picks a product simply because its package looks attractive.
B.A student solves math problems by strictly following formulas and logical reasoning.
C.A firefighter suddenly reroutes a rescue mission after sensing some hidden risks
D.A student quickly guesses random answers without consideration during a timed quiz.
31.What is the author's main purpose in writing this article?
A.To describe how brains process external cues.
B.To explain the scientific basis and value of intuition.

C.To compare conscious and subconscious thinking
D.To criticize the overuse of intuition in daily life.

Switzerland's glaciers experienced severe melting in 2025,with their total volume decreasing
by 3%,according to a recent report from the Swiss glacier monitoring group GLAMOS and the
Swiss Academy of Sciences. This marks the fourth-largest annual ice loss on record, following the
annual ice losses in 2022,2023,and 2003.The combined effect of such melting over the past
decade has been destructive, resulting in a loss of one-quarter of Switzerland's total glacier ice
mass.
Scientists described the glacial melting as "enormous"this year. The primary causes were a
combination of a low-snowfall winter and intense heat waves during June and August.June 2025
was recorded as the second-warmest June in history, which led to the early reduction of snow
reserves by early July.Consequently, the ice masses began to melt earlier than ever observed,
speeding up the overall decline.
Matthias Huss, head of GLAMOS and a glaciologist at ETH Zurich University, emphasized
that human-caused global warming is the fundamental cause."Glaciers are clearly fading because
of global warming related to human activity,"he stated, noting that this is the main driver behind
the faster melting witnessed in recent years.
The implications of this rapid ice loss are far-reaching.Switzerland,which is home to nearly
1,400 glaciers-the most in Europe-sees its glaciers as critical resources. They influence
hydropower generation, tourism, agriculture, and water supply across many European nations. The
environmental changes are already noticeable:more than 1,000 small glaciers in Switzerland have
completely disappeared.
Beyond resource management, the melting glaciers are directly changing Switzerland's
physical landscape. The reduction of ice is causing mountains to become unstable and shift,
increasing the nisk of rock and ice collapses. This was clearly illustrated in May 2025,when a
massive section of rock and ice broke off a glacier, thundering down a mountainside and nearly
burying the southern village of Blatten. This event has put Swiss authorities in a state of
heightened caution for similar incidents in the future.
The consistent and more rapid melting serves as a clear indicator of the ongoing climate crisis,
underscoring the urgent need for global action to address its root causes.
32.How does the author present the severity of glacial melting in paragraph 1?
A.By explaining scientific theories.
B.By interviewing local villagers.
C.By listing related records.
D.By introducing research methods
33.What has caused the earlier melting of Swiss glaciers in 2025?
A.Frequent rock and ice collapses.
B.High temperatures in June and August.
C.Reduced hydropower generation needs.
D.The record-low number of small glaciers.
34.What does the author want to show by mentioning the Blatten village?
A.The danger of glacial collapses.
B.The work of Swiss authorities
C.The decline ofresources.
D.The change of physical landscape.
35.What is the author's purpose in writing the text?
A.To introduce GLAMOS's new report
B.To promote tourism in Switzerland.
C.To track the process of glacier melting.
D.To call for action against climate crisis.

Falling on June 8th, World Oceans Day reminds us of the significance of marine protection.
There is no denying that oceans are of great value to the earth. They regulate the global climate, produce abundant oxygen and provide abundant resources for human survival. Besides, they shelter various marine creatures and maintain ecological balance.
Nevertheless, severe pollution and overfishing are threatening ocean ecosystems. As students, we should take responsibility. We can reduce the use of plastic products, participate in beach-cleaning activities and advocate ocean protection around us. Small efforts will surely contribute to a better marine environment.

根据第一段中的“With the 70th anniversary of our school approaching, the Student Union is holding a photography competition open to all students.(随着学校七十周年校庆即将到来,学生会面向全体学生举办一场摄影比赛。)”
根据General Rules部分中的“No edited photos (except basic cropping and brightness adjustment) are allowed.(除了基础裁剪和亮度调节外,不允许对照片进行其他修改。)”
【答案】24.C 25.A 26.D 27. B
根据第一段中的 “There is no snow — just plastic mats with rough bristles.(这里没有雪,只有带有粗糙毛刺的塑料垫)” 可知,这个滑雪坡道没有积雪,地面铺设塑料垫。
根据第二段 “Dave Ryding, now 39, started skiing here at age six. He trained on the plastic surface well into his teens.” 以及第三段 “Ryding remembers training in sweatpants and getting friction burns when he fell. Summer practice sessions were sometimes interrupted by sheep crossing the hill.” Generous(大方的)、Careless(粗心的)、Humorous(幽默的)文中均无相关信息支撑。
根据第四段 “Strangely, the short slope — just 12 seconds from top to bottom — became an advantage. Ryding learned to start explosively. On flat race sections, he is often faster than skiers from traditional winter sports countries like Sweden or Norway.”
根据最后一段 “Kids gather every Sunday morning to watch him race on TV. ‘He started here and made it to the Olympics,’ said 16-year-old Jayden Cuttriss. ‘It shows it’s possible for anyone.’”
B 29. A 30. C 31. B
28. B 解析:定位原文第一段关键句 “Research done by Leeds University shows that these feelings, or intuitions, are real and we should take them seriously.”,take them seriously 等同于 trust their intuitive feelings。
29. A 解析:根据第三段 “intuition is the brain drawing on past experiences and external cues to decide — but one that happens so fast that the reaction is on a non-conscious level” 可知,non-conscious 对应 subconscious,说明直觉是对外界线索的潜意识处理。
C 33. B 34. A 35. D
The primary causes were a combination of a low-snowfall winter and intense heat waves during June and August. June 2025 was recorded as the second-warmest June in history, which led to the early reduction of snow reserves...the ice masses began to melt earlier 6、8 月高温热浪导致积雪提前耗尽,冰川融化提前。
The consistent and more rapid melting serves as a clear indicator of the ongoing climate crisis, underscoring the urgent need for global action to address its root causes.

Hidden in the quiet countryside of northwest England lies a very unusual ski slope (坡道). It is only 140 meters long and 10 meters wide. There is no snow — just plastic mats with rough bristles (毛刺). Grass grows through the surface in some places. Sheep sometimes wander across the slope during training. This is Pendle Ski Club, and people often describe it with one word: humble.
But this modest slope has produced Britain’s greatest skier. Dave Ryding, now 39, started skiing here at age six. He trained on the plastic surface well into his teens. Today, he is the only British winner in the nearly 60-year history of the Alpine Skiing World Cup. His victory came in Kitzbuehel, Austria — one of the world’s most challenging races. As he headed to his final Olympics in Milan Cortina, he was a potential medal winner.
Britain gets only limited snowfall each year. There are 67 ski slopes in the country, but most are dry slopes or indoor snow centers. The odds of producing a world-class skier were very low. Ryding remembers training in sweatpants and getting friction burns when he fell. Summer practice sessions were sometimes interrupted by sheep crossing the hill.
Strangely, the short slope — just 12 seconds from top to bottom — became an advantage. Ryding learned to start explosively. On flat race sections, he is often faster than skiers from traditional winter sports countries like Sweden or Norway. John Holmes, an instructor at the club, explained, “People who start on the bristles learn the true technique — putting weight on the outside ski, setting a good edge, and shaping the turn. It builds the fundamentals.”
Today, Pendle Ski Club has 600 members, from children to skiers in their 70s. A large Union Jack flag hangs in the clubhouse with Ryding’s nickname, “Rocket.” Kids gather every Sunday morning to watch him race on TV. “He started here and made it to the Olympics,” said 16-year-old Jayden Cuttriss. “It shows it’s possible for anyone.”
24. What do we know about Pendle Ski Club’s slope?
A. It is fit for long skiing races.
B. It is large and well-equipped.
C. It has no snow but plastic mats.
D. It is a common snow slope in Britain.
25. What kind of person is Dave Ryding?
A. Hard-working. B. Generous.
C. Careless. D. Humorous.
26. What does the author want to indicate by mentioning skiers from Sweden and Norway?
A. Britain’s poor snow conditions. B. Different ways of skiing training.
C. Famous winter sports countries. D. Ryding’s speed advantage in races.
27. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. Jayden wants to take Dave Ryding’s place.
B. Ryding sets a good example for young skiers.
C. All club members are under twenty years old.
D. The club only trains children for the Olympics.

Most of us have some “gut feelings” that we can't explain. For example, when we hunt for a new house, we might suddenly like it a lot or dislike it right away. Or when we meet new people, we make instant judgements on them without careful thought. Research done by Leeds University shows that these feelings, or intuitions, are real and we should take them seriously.
According to the research, intuition is the result of the way our brains store, process and obtain information on a subconscious (潜意识的) level, and so is a real psychological phenomenon that needs further study to help us unlock its potential.
There are many cases where intuition prevented major disasters, and cases of remarkable recoveries when doctors followed their gut feelings. Yet, science has historically questioned the concept of intuition, labelling it as “anti-scientific”. Through analysis of a wide range of research papers examining the phenomenon, researchers have concluded that intuition is the brain drawing on past experiences and external cues to decide — but one that happens so fast that the reaction is on a non-conscious level. All we're aware of is a general feeling that something is right or wrong.
Researchers believe that people usually experience true intuition when they are under severe time pressure or in a situation of information overload or acute danger, where conscious analysis of the situation may be difficult or impossible. They cite a Formula One driver, who once braked suddenly before a sharp U-turn without knowing why. This automatic reaction saved him from crashing into a pile of cars ahead, likely preventing a fatal accident. Though he couldn't explain his urge to stop, it overrode his competitive drive to win. After psychologists showed the driver a video replay, he realized at that very moment the crowd wasn't cheering as usual — they stood frozen, staring in the opposite direction as he approached the U-turn. That was the cue. He didn't consciously process this, but he knew something was wrong and stopped in time.
Researchers believe that all intuitive experiences are based on the automatic evaluation of such internal and external cues. They say that we clearly need both conscious and non-conscious thought processes, but neither is superior to the other.
28.What does the research from Leeds University indicate?
A. Gut feelings are not reliable in daily life.
B. People ought to trust their intuitive feelings.
C. Intuition is just a random psychological response.
D. Intuitive responses often lead to wrong decisions.
29.According to Paragraph 3, what can we infer about intuition?
A. Intuition involves subconscious processing of external cues.
B. Intuition only works in life-threatening situations.
C. Intuition relies on conscious analysis of visible dangers.
D. Intuition is a random guess with no logical basis.
30.Which of the following real-life situations best illustrates the application of intuition?
A. A shopper picks a product simply because its package looks attractive.
B. A student solves math problems by strictly following formulas and logical reasoning.
C. A firefighter suddenly reroutes a rescue mission after sensing some hidden risks.
D. A student quickly guesses random answers without consideration during a timed quiz.
31.What is the author's main purpose in writing this article?
A. To describe how brains process external cues.
B. To explain the scientific basis and value of intuition.
C. To compare conscious and subconscious thinking.
D. To criticize the overuse of intuition in daily life.

Switzerland’s glaciers experienced severe melting in 2025, with their total volume decreasing by 3%, according to a recent report from the Swiss glacier monitoring group GLAMOS and the Swiss Academy of Sciences. This marks the fourth-largest annual ice loss on record, following the annual ice losses in 2022, 2023, and 2003. The combined effect of such melting over the past decade has been destructive, resulting in a loss of one-quarter of Switzerland’s total glacier ice mass.
Scientists described the glacial melting as “enormous” this year. The primary causes were a combination of a low-snowfall winter and intense heat waves during June and August. June 2025 was recorded as the second-warmest June in history, which led to the early reduction of snow reserves by early July. Consequently, the ice masses began to melt earlier than ever observed, speeding up the overall decline.
Matthias Huss, head of GLAMOS and a glaciologist at ETH Zurich University, emphasized that human-caused global warming is the fundamental cause. “Glaciers are clearly fading because of global warming related to human activity,” he stated, noting that this is the main driver behind the faster melting witnessed in recent years.
The implications of this rapid ice loss are far-reaching. Switzerland, which is home to nearly 1,400 glaciers — the most in Europe — sees its glaciers as critical resources. They influence hydropower generation, tourism, agriculture, and water supply across many European nations. The environmental changes are already noticeable: more than 1,000 small glaciers in Switzerland have completely disappeared.
Beyond resource management, the melting glaciers are directly changing Switzerland’s physical landscape. The reduction of ice is causing mountains to become unstable and shift, increasing the risk of rock and ice collapses. This was clearly illustrated in May 2025, when a massive section of rock and ice broke off a glacier, thundering down a mountainside and nearly burying the southern village of Blatten. This event has put Swiss authorities in a state of heightened caution for similar incidents in the future.
The consistent and more rapid melting serves as a clear indicator of the ongoing climate crisis, underscoring the urgent need for global action to address its root causes.
32. How does the author present the severity of glacial melting in paragraph 1?
A. By explaining scientific theories. B. By interviewing local villagers.
C. By listing related records. D. By introducing research methods.
33. What has caused the earlier melting of Swiss glaciers in 2025?
A. Frequent rock and ice collapses. B. High temperatures in June and August.
C. Reduced hydropower generation needs. D. The record-low number of small glaciers.
34. What does the author want to show by mentioning the Blatten village?
A. The danger of glacial collapses. B. The work of Swiss authorities.
C. The decline of resources. D. The change of physical landscape.
35. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To introduce GLAMOS’s new report.
B. To promote tourism in Switzerland.
C. To track the process of glacier melting.
D. To call for action against climate crisis.
