It’s personal. Kamariza grew up in the small African country of Burundi, where many around her were stricken with TB. In Burundi, it’s rare for girls to attend college. “Science was something that Europeans and Americans did,” she says. “It was for other people—not for me.” “I never dreamt Kamariza would become a scientist because it is a career path that is unknown in Burundi,” says Denise Sinankwa, Kamariza’s mother. She and her husband were raising four kids, and Sinankwa often did multiple jobs to feed the family. But Sinankwa still pushed Kamariza to do well in school. She wanted her daughter to land a good-paying job and be able to support herself. When Kamariza was 17, she went to San Diego, the US, in the fall of 2006 with her brothers. They took various jobs at grocery stores, restaurants and shops. At San Diego Mesa College, she met Saloua Saidane, her chemistry teacher, who was a fellow French-speaking African. “She started my journey into science. She really pushed me and kept motivating me and telling me I should aim high. Whatever she told me, I did,” says Kamariza. She is now a graduate student at Stanford University. Kamariza wanted to focus on infectious disease. So she started brainstorming with her partner, another graduate student, to figure out a quicker way to diagnose TB. They eventually came up with a new test that recognises a sugar, called trehalose, that is only found in TB bacteria (细菌). Current TB tests take a lot of time and effort and are not very sensitive—some infections are missed. TB cultures are more reliable but take six weeks to produce a result. Kamariza’s methods could make TB diagnoses simpler and more accurate. In 2018, Harvard offered Kamariza a position in its Society of Fellows. “I’m the first black woman biologist at the society,” she says. “At that point, it’s not about me any more. It’s what I represent.” ( )1.What can we infer about Denise Sinankwa? A.She once got infected with TB. B.She dreamed about being a scientist. C.She valued her daughter’s education. D.She encouraged her kids to study science. ( )2.What does Kamariza say about Saloua Saidane? A.Saidane had a big influence on her. B.Saidane seldom spoke highly of her. C.Saidane had unrealistic expectations. D.Saidane was unfriendly to her students. ( )3.Why did Kamariza work with her partner? A.To shorten the time used to cure TB. B.To produce more reliable TB cultures. C.To develop a faster test to diagnose TB. D.To figure out the bacteria leading to TB. ( )4.What can we learn from Kamariza’s experience? A.Luck often plays a vital part in scientific research. B.We should pursue our passions despite difficulties. C.Hard work does not necessarily pay off eventually. D.Scientific progress and the reputation matter equally. B Each spring, scientists hide more than 1,600 lunchbox-size recorders across the forests of the Sierra Nevada range in the western US. These devices record a million hours of the sound of the California spotted owl (斑点猫头鹰)—valuable information about where the endangered species spends its time. But it’s a lot of recordings for a human to sift(细查) through. “There’s no way we can listen to that—not even close, right?” says Connor Wood, a research associate who co-leads the owl project. It turns out that this team actually can process this amount of data—they just need a little help from BirdNET, an AI-powered system launched in 2018 that can identify more than 6,000 species of birds across the globe just by their calls. More research is showing that AI can recognize bird behaviours and where they mainly live, which is critical for conservation. In 2016, Wood approached Stefan Kahl, a computer scientist, to help create an algorithm (算法) that processes bird sounds recorded in the wild. Two years later, the team launched the official BirdNET app, which allows people across the world to upload their own recordings from a variety of devices, including laptops and smartphones. Since then, BirdNET has collected roughly 150 million high-quality bird sounds. With funding from the US Forest Service and National Park Service, Wood and his team recently used BirdNET to create the first ecosystem-wide assessment of spotted owl populations across the Sierra Nevada, which increasingly face threats from foreign species or wildfires. This information shows owl population trends can boost restoration and conservation efforts. In his 2023 study, ecologist Cristian Pérez-Granados reviewed a range of scientific literature on BirdNET. His research found that BirdNET didn’t always register a bird’s song, and sometimes misidentified it as another species, which results in “false positives”. Users of another AI-powered app, Merlin, have also reported cases of misidentification, which could have negative impacts on research projects containing citizen science data. ( )5.Why are the recorders used across the forests of the Sierra Nevada range? A.To track the movements of various species. B.To help spot some endangered animals there. C.To collect sounds of California spotted owls. D.To monitor human activities in the forests. ( )6.How does Stefan contribute to the BirdNET project? A.By providing funds for the project. B.By offering technical support to BirdNET. C.By helping record the bird sounds. D.By solving threats from foreign species. ( )7.What does the author want to convey about BirdNET in the last paragraph? A.It is to be improved by scientists. B.It has some recognized limitations. C.It offers accuracy in identifying birds. D.It can be used to discover other animals. ( )8.What is the best title for the text? A.AI is helping scientists protect birds B.High tech is being used in bird identification C.California spotted owls are facing challenges D.Foreign species are killing endangered birds ●Ⅱ 阅读七选五 Problem-solving skills are increasingly valuable in the workplace and could help you achieve more in your personal life too. Mastering these skills involves adopting effective approaches that enhance your ability to face challenges and find solutions. 1.     Develop analytical thinking. Analytical thinking is a very important skill. It breaks down big issues into smaller, more manageable components. 2. Begin by clearly defining (下定义) the problem at hand, finding out its key components and recognizing the interconnections between them. In the end, individuals can turn challenging problems into manageable insights.   3.     Clear and simple communication is the key to effective problem-solving. Effective communication begins with clearly defining the problem statement. This involves choosing the right words, structuring information, and being mindful of the audience to ensure that your message is broad. Also, active listening is the skill of receiving information with focus. It involves not just hearing words but understanding the differences, emotions and ultimate messages. Promote cooperation. Effective problem-solving often develops rapidly in a cooperative environment, where diverse opinions fuel innovation. 4. By acknowledging and valuing the differences, the team can create a cooperative environment. The whole is truly greater than the sum of its parts. Also, the atmosphere is powerful to effective problem-solving.   Stay informed. 5. Staying informed about current events and relevant information equips individuals with a broader understanding of potential challenges. It requires a sharp eye for credible sources of information. And staying informed involves continuous learning and a devotion to keeping up with developments in your field.  A.Listen to others attentively. B.Improve communication skills. C.The following strategies are worth a try. D.Improving this skill requires a structured approach. E.Regularly updating your knowledge keeps you sharp.
