Read Paragraphs 1–2
1
What do we know about the panda at the beginning?
It is a Chinese national treasure, popular around the world, and in the 1970s there were only around 1,000 in the wild.
2
What happened in 2016?
The panda was moved from “endangered” to “vulnerable” on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
This change leads to the key question of the passage: How did it happen?

Read Paragraphs 3–5
1
What has China’s government done?
It set up the Giant Panda National Park, created more than 60 protected areas, and set up research centres for pandas.
2
How have local people helped?
Many farmers returned part of their farmland to the forests and planted trees and bamboo.
3
Why does the writer say protecting pandas brings hope to the whole environment?
Because the forests are home to many other animals and plants, so when panda habitats improve, their “neighbours” benefit too.

Sample passage
The tiger is another success in animal protection. It lives on the land and used to face serious problems such as hunting and the loss of its environment. As a result, the number of tigers dropped greatly. However, people made great efforts to protect this animal. Nature reserves were set up, laws were improved and more forests were protected. With these actions, the tiger’s environment became safer. Now tigers are better protected than before. I think this success shows that when people protect wild animals, they also protect the whole environment.
