Unit 3 Getting along with others.单元综合过关练 一、阅读理解。 A Youth Sports Online: An Interview with Carlos Youth Sports: Carlos, you’ve played rugby(英式橄榄球运动) for ten years. I hear it’s a pretty cruel game. How does it differ from American football? Carlos: First, rugby is much more active. In American football, each 15-minute quarter has only about three to four minutes of actual play. Rugby is almost the opposite. Each half lasts 45 minutes, and the clock stops only for injuries and player exchange. Second, football players wear helmets and pads(防护垫) all over their bodies to protect themselves when they are hit or tackled(擒抱). Tackles happen in rugby, too, but we don’t wear pads. We play in shorts, long socks, metal cleats, and rugby jerseys. You have to be tough to play rugby! And since the clock never stops, a downed player has only one second to throw the ball to a teammate. If he’s caught by players but doesn’t fall down, the opposing team tries to pull the ball out of his hands! Carlos: Yes. Each game’s goal is to get an oval-shaped ball across a line. In rugby it’s called the “try line”, and in football it’s called the “goal line”. In both games, you get a chance to score again after you cross the line. In football you can kick the ball through the goal posts or try to run or pass the ball across the goal line, but in rugby you only get to kick the ball. Youth Sports: Do you think rugby is a better game? Carlos: Absolutely! There’s more speed and team play that you don’t have in football. In rugby, the positions change. No player plays just one position, and anyone can carry or kick the ball. It’s very exciting! 1.How is the equipment different for rugby and American football?( ) A.Rugby uses a round ball. B.Rugby does not have goal posts. C.Football players wear pads and helmets. D.Football players wear shorts and long socks. 2.What can we learn about rugby from the text?( ) A.Players tackle one another. B.The clock stops after each play. C.The game has four 15-minute quarters. D.Players’ positions seldom change. 3.What do football and rugby have in common?( ) A.Each half is 30 minutes long. B.The play clock stops after a tackle. C.Players score by getting a ball across a line. D.The ball continues moving throughout the game. B Last summer, I volunteered at a small woodworking studio in the old district of our city. It was there that I met Mr. Chen, a 58-year-old master craftsman(工匠) whose hands told stories of working with wood for decades. While his workshop was filled with traditional tools, what he created was non-traditional wooden furniture(家具) that perfectly mixed classic craftsmanship with modern design. What impressed me most was Mr. Chen’s unique opinion on what he called “new-era craftsmanship”. Though he learned woodworking from his father as a teenager, he never used old methods only. Recognizing the changing taste of younger customers, he spent evenings teaching himself 3-D modeling software and weekends researching green materials like bamboos and water-based finishes. I saw his new methods firsthand when a young couple asked for a bookshelf for their small apartment. They needed something that could save space and be eco-friendly and easy to take apart for potential moves. Mr. Chen accepted the challenge happily. Over the next week, he created many digital prototypes(数字原型), experimented with three different types of wood, and reinvented old skills to create connecting parts that required no metal pieces. I often found him working late, his hands carefully testing each part. When I asked why he spent so much time on what seemed like a simple project, he stopped his work and smiled. “True craftsmanship isn’t about copying what people in the past did without thinking,” he explained. “It’s about understanding the true value of tradition while having the courage to change it for today’s world.” To explain his point, he showed me two bookshelves — one he made twenty years ago, beautiful in its strong structure, and the new prototype, which used thirty percent less material but was just as strong and more useful for modern living. Through Mr. Chen’s example, I came to understand that new-era craftsmanship stands for the perfect mix of hard work and new ideas. It honors the past while accepting the future, proving that excellence comes not from doing one thing forever, but from doing it well with a never-stopping spirit. 4.Why did the author mention traditional tools in paragraph 1?( ) A.To tell the wisdom of past generations. B.To stress Mr. Chen’s source of inspiration. C.To praise the spirit of traditional craftsmanship. D.To show their difference from Mr. Chen’s modern ideas. 5.What can be inferred from the young couple’s requests?( ) A.Craftsmen need to keep up with the times. B.Young people like new methods. C.Traditional craftsmanship has greatly changed. D.Modern ways are different from traditional ones. 6.What does “true craftsmanship” mean in Mr. Chen’s view?( ) A.Creating products with few materials. B.Keeping working hard through testing. C.Mixing digital methods with traditional ones. D.Changing traditional wisdom for modern use. 7.What does Mr. Chen’s story show?( ) A.The best of both worlds. B.If it isn’t broken, don’t fix it. C.Two sides of the same coin. D.What is new is not always better. C More than a fifth of the global ocean has become darker over the past two decades, according to new research conducted by the University of Plymouth and Plymouth Marine Laboratory. The process, known as “ocean darkening”, happens when things in the top part of the ocean change, which stops sunlight from reaching far below the surface. The study, published in Global Change Biology, found 21% of the global ocean had become darker between 2003 and 2022. And more than 9% of the ocean — an area similar in size of Africa — had seen light reduced by over 50 meters, with 2.6% experiencing a reduction over 100 meters. Researchers believed reasons for ocean darkening were factors such as changes in the growth of algae(藻类), warmer sea surface temperatures and man-made light. Dr. Thomas Davies, associate professor of Marine Conservation, said, “There has been research showing how the surface of the ocean has changed colour over the last 20 years. But our results show that such changes cause widespread darkening, which makes it harder for animals that need sunlight or moonlight to live and reproduce.” While the exact effects of the changes were not wholly clear, Dr. Davies stated that ocean darkening could affect the air humans breathe, the fish they eat, and the world’s ability to fight climate change. Professor Tim Smyth warned that animals depending on light could become closer to the surface, increasing competition for food and possibly causing fundamental (根本的) changes in the entire marine ecosystem(海洋生态系统). “Our findings should be a real concern for everyone,” Dr. Davies stressed. Dealing with this challenge requires an integrated effort. Scientists stress that reducing greenhouse gas emissions is fundamental to slowing ocean warming. At the same time, improving the adaptability of the marine ecosystem is equally important to help it deal with these changes. Improving global monitoring through advanced technologies and other observations is also seen as important for tracking these changes. We need to take collective action to stop this trend, which is harmful to both marine and human life. 8.What happens in ocean darkening?( ) A.The growth of algae is slowing. B.Man-made light brightens the ocean. C.Sea animals move closer to the ocean surface. D.Less sunlight reaches deep into the ocean. 9.According to Tim Smyth, what is influenced by ocean darkening?( ) A.The reproduction of fish. B.The ocean water temperatures. C.The way to address climate change. D.The survival of light-dependent animals. 10.What does the underlined word “integrated” in the last paragraph probably mean?( ) A.Basic. B.Joined. C.Well-planned. D.Long-term. 11.What can be a suitable title for the text?( ) A.Sunlight Loss: Less Living Space for Sea Life B.Greenhouse Gases: A Driver of Ocean Changes C.Ocean Darkening: A Danger to Marine Life and Humans D.Plymouth Research: A New Discovery of Ocean Darkening D David Thomas and I met when we were about 5 years old. We celebrated his 26th birthday last weekend, marking roughly twenty years of friendship. David is a doctoral candidate now, and I’m a science reporter. We’ve both read research on the effect that friendships can have on mental health, and a study published in Child Development seemed particularly connected to us. The research suggests that friendships from adolescence(青春期) might have a special role in a person’s mental health for years. The researchers followed 169 people for 10 years, starting when they were 15 years old. Each year, the participants(参与者) were asked to bring along their closest friends for one-on-one interviews with the researchers. “They were asked how much trust there is, how good communication is and how alienated(感觉疏远的) they feel in the relationship,” says Rachel Narr, the lead author of the study. Narr says that when she watched videos made in the early years of the study of the teens asking their best friends for advice or support or talking through a disagreement, it was easy to tell which relationships were strong. “These teens are more likely to be open with one another about difficult topics, and they interact with one another more often, helping the other person when necessary,” she says. Those strong relationships are paying off in adulthood, the study found. When the researchers evaluated the participants at the conclusion of the study, the ones who had close, emotional links showed improvement in their levels of anxiety, depression and self-worth. I know that I would not be the same person without David’s 20-year presence in my life. Over the years, David has been one of the first people to listen to my mess without judgment. We talked about Narr’s study last weekend, and we saw ourselves. Yes, the mechanisms behind how best friendships change one’s mental well-being may be unclear. But the study found that simply the presence of a best friend matters, and that makes sense to us. 12.What were the participants required to do?( ) A.Interview their best friends. B.Watch videos of their interaction. C.Work on their communication skills. D.Share information about their friendships. 13.According to Rachel Narr, which reflects strong teen friendships?( ) A.Teens avoid discussing difficult topics. B.Teens are more likely to open up to their friends. C.Teens have no need to keep frequent interaction. D.Teens support their friends even in disagreement. 14.What can be concluded about strong friendships from adolescence?( ) A.They prove unbreakable. B.They contribute to lower self-worth. C.They cause more anxiety. D.They produce positive results in adulthood. 15.Which opinion is the author most likely to agree with?( ) A.A good friend should always be frank and direct. B.Lasting friendships are built on shared interests. C.A best friend has great significance for one’s life. D.How we develop best friendships remains unclear. 二、七选五。 There are many central goals and themes that can drive people’s travel planning — think “sleepcations” built around rest and “sports tourism” centered on big athletic events. Her house was always tidy, and the street in front of her home was a model of cleanliness. Every morning, she would take a walk, admiring the nice flowers and the well-cleaned roads. One sunny morning, her peaceful world suddenly fell apart. An old camper van(野营车) pulled up right in front of her house. After many long trips, its paint coating was coming off, making the van look even more worn-out. And one of the tires(轮胎) looked a bit flat. Brenda’s face immediately darkened. She thought it was an ugly mess that ruined the street’s tidiness. Soon, the owner of the van, Maud, a woman in her sixties, knocked on Brenda’s door. Maud had a warm smile and explained that she planned to stay in the town during the local folk music festival. She also asked if she could use Brenda’s bathroom. “I’m sorry, but that’s not convenient,” Brenda answered coldly, shutting the door before Maud could say more. She just wanted this “ugly woman” to leave as soon as possible. Over the next few days, Brenda tried everything to make Maud leave. She called the town office, saying the van was blocking traffic (it wasn’t), and even left a note asking her to move. But Maud just waved and smiled each time she saw Brenda, never complaining. At night, Brenda would hear soft music coming from the van — soft guitar strums(弹拨声) and a sweet voice singing old folk songs. Slowly, her anger turned into doubt. “Am I being too unfriendly?” she wondered. Maud didn’t seem like a troublemaker and didn’t do anything wrong. She was a traveller and maybe she just wanted to make friends and enjoy the festival. 注意: (1)续写词数应为150个左右; (2)请按如下格式作答。 Paragraph 1: The next morning, Brenda took a deep breath and walked to the van.________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: By the time the festival ended, they were good friends.___________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 参考答案 一、1-3:CAC 4-7:DADA 8-11:DDBC 12-15:DBDC 二、1-5:DAEGF 三、1-15:ADACA BBCCD BDDCB 四、1.as 2.made 3.a 4.to form 5.taking 6.truly 7.which 8.has gained/has been gaining 9.impression 10.themselves 五、 六、One possible version Paragraph 1: Paragraph 2: ( 1 ) 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
