Body language is the act of communicating using anything other than your words. People all around the world use their bodies to express themselves: greeting someone with a hug or a handshake, smiling, frowning, waving, pointing, dancing and so much more. But gestures (手势) that mean one thing in your part of the world can mean something different somewhere else!
Bowing in the Republic of Korea
In the Republic of Korea, you bow when meeting a person for the first time. This gesture can mean “Hello” “Goodbye” “Thank you” or “I’m sorry”. Generally, the lower you bow, the more respect you show to the other person. The longer you keep your head bowed, the more respect you show to others. Depending on where you go, of course, the rules for bowing may be different.
Head Shaking in India
In Western cultures, when we say “yes”, we nod our heads up and down. “No” is swinging the head from left to right. People from India, however, use their heads to express so much more than a simple “yes” or “no”. In India, “yes” is expressed by tilting (使倾斜) the head from one side to the shoulder — the faster the shake, the more certain the “yes” is. This gesture is popular during a conversation to show that the listener is paying attention and being agreeable.
Counting in Russia
If you count on your fingers from one to five, you may start with a balled-up fist (握拳) and gradually uncurl (伸直) each finger. In Russia, people also count with their fingers. To count to five, Russians first open their palms (手掌), then curl their fingers one by one. By “five,” they have a balled-up fist.
19. How does the writer start the passage?
A. By asking questions. B. By giving examples. C. By telling stories.
20. What do we know from the last sentence of the first paragraph?
A. Different body language sometimes may mean the same thing.
B. Different people would like to use different body language.
C. The same body language means differently in different places.
21. Which of the following is TRUE about bowing in the Republic of Korea?
a. You can show your thanks by bowing.
b. To respect others, you can bow much lower.
c. To show your respect, you can bow for a short time.
d. The rules for bowing are different in different places.
A. a, b, c B. b, c, d C. a, b, d
22. If you live in India and you agree to attend your friend’s party, what should you do?
A. Tilt my head from one side to the shoulder.
B. Nod my head up and down many times.
C. Move my head from one side to the middle.
23. What is the structure of this passage? (P = Paragraph)
A. B. C.

Hey kids! Sleep is important! You might have heard of this before. Scientists have found out that sleep helps you grow strong and keeps you from getting sick. And guess what? Sleep also works on your grades, a new study finds.
The scientist, Jeffrey Grossman, wanted to study how sleep helped students do well in school. He asked 100 kids from his class to wear a special wristband (腕带) called a Fitbit. This cool thing can tell you how long you sleep and if you wake up a lot during the night. The students wore these bands all term long, and at the end, the scientists looked at their sleep information.
They found some interesting things. As expected, kids who tossed and turned (翻来覆去) a lot at night didn’t do well in their tests. The same went for those who didn’t get enough sleep. But here’s a big surprise. Whether you sleep more or less during the night before the test does nothing to your grades! So is staying up studying before the big test okay? No!!! What really matters is sleeping the same number of hours every night for a week or even a month before the test. That means a student who sleeps seven hours at night, every night, will do better than a student who sleeps 7.5 hours one night and 6.5 hours another night,” Grossman said. This is really unexpected!
How long they sleep, how well they sleep, and sleeping the same hours every night together made a big difference to the students’ test scores. And it appeared especially important for boys. Grossman’s team was not sure why. But boys who didn’t sleep well or slept at different times did worse on tests than girls who had the same sleep. These findings show that sleep is really important for doing well in school. And, knowing how to get good sleep can make a big difference!
24. According to the passage, the Fitbit can ________.
A. help you fall asleep easily
B. tell you how long you sleep
C. fix your sleeping problem
25. What BIG question does Paragraph 2 answer?
A. How long should we sleep?
B. Why is sleep so important?
C. How did the scientist do the study?
26. What does the study say about sleeping more or less during the night before a test?
A. It greatly improves your test grades.
B. It does nothing to your grades.
C. It works better for boys than for girls.
27. According to the study, which line chart may be from the student with the best grades?
A. B. C.
28. What would the writer write about after the last paragraph?
A. The ways to get better sleep.
B. The result of the study.
C. The importance of sleep.

Have you ever wondered what science is? Well, it is both knowledge about the natural world and a set of methods to explore it.
Science is everywhere. Physics, chemistry and biology are key parts of science. At school, we learn these different subjects because they explain the world in different ways. By learning them, we connect science with the world and use it to solve problems in our daily lives.
Though these subjects have different focuses, they share a common scientific study method. First, we can start by finding a problem and asking some questions. Then, we guess what the answers might be. To examine the answers, we do plenty of tests. After that, check the results again and again. At last, draw a conclusion (结论).
In fact, this study method doesn’t only belong to scientists. Students could use it, too. Let’s take the example of Jia Mingxuan.
Jia Mingxuan, a 14-year-old student, once went on a trip and found the trees couldn’t grow well in dry desert, so he read lots of scientific magazines and asked his teachers for help. He also kept trying many tests. Finally, he invented a self-watering tool and won a gold medal.
To think and act like scientists, some scientific qualities are needed, such as persistence (坚持), creativity, curiosity, logical (逻辑的) thinking and team spirit. They lead us to grow into top talents for our country.
34. What is science?
_____________________________________________________________
35. Why do we learn different science subjects?
_____________________________________________________________
36. Please complete the scientific study method with one word in each blank.
________ ________
37. Why is the example of Jia Mingxuan mentioned?

38. Among the qualities above, which one do you want to develop? And how will you develop this quality?

Villagers also taught their children to love animals and plants.
A. B. C.

根据“Body language is the act…to express themselves: greeting someone with a hug or a handshake, smiling, frowning, waving…”可知,作者开篇定义肢体语言后,列举了拥抱、握手、微笑等多种肢体语言的例子引出话题。
【20题详解】
根据第一段最后一句“But gestures that mean one thing in your part of the world can mean something different somewhere else!”可知,同一个手势在你所在地区代表一种含义,在其他地方可能代表完全不同的含义,即同一肢体语言在不同地点含义不同。
【21题详解】
根据第二段,原文“you bow when…can mean… ‘Thank you’…”对应a“通过鞠躬表达感谢”;原文“the lower you bow, the more respect you show to the other person.”对应b“鞠躬越低,表达的尊重越多”;原文“Depending on where you go, of course, the rules for bowing may be different.”对应d“不同地区鞠躬的规则并不相同”,因此a、b、d表述正确。
【22题详解】
根据“In India, ‘yes’ is expressed by tilting the head from one side to the shoulder”可知,印度表达同意的动作是将头向一侧歪到肩膀处。
【23题详解】
通读全文可知,本文第一段总起提出核心观点,第二段讲韩国鞠躬、第三段讲印度摇头、第四段讲俄罗斯计数,三个段落是平行并列的分论点,符合C项结构图。

Last summer, I went to a small village with my grandparents. My grandpa told me that the village was not as beautiful as before—people there did not respect ____39____ at all. They cut down many trees to build houses and threw all kinds of rubbish into the small river nearby. Over time, the village changed a lot.

These punishments finally made people realize they were wrong and decide to take action.
They started to ____41____ trees every year and stopped throwing rubbish into the river. They cleaned the river carefully and made rules to protect it.
