Live with roommates? Have friends and family around you? The chances are that if you're looking to live a more sustainable lifestyle, not everyone around you will be ready to jump on that bandwagon.
I experienced this when I started switching to a zero waste lifestyle five years ago, as I was living with my parents, and I continue to experience this with my husband, as he is not completely zero waste like me. I've learned a few things along the way though, which I hope you'll find encouraging if you're doing your best to figure out how you can make the change in a not-always-supportive household.
Zero waste was a radical lifestyle movement a few years back. I remember showing my parents a video of Bea Johnson, sharing how cool I thought it would be to buy groceries with jars, and have so little trash! A few days later, I came back with my first jars of zero waste groceries, and my dad commented on how silly it was for me to carry jars everywhere. It came off as a bit discouraging.
Yet as the months of reducing waste continued, I did what I could that was within my own reach. I had my own bedroom, so I worked on removing things I didn't need. Since I had my own toiletries (洗漱用品), I was able to start personalising my routine to be more sustainable. I also offered to cook every so often, so I portioned out a bit of the cupboard for my own zero waste groceries. Perhaps your household won't entirely make the switch, but you may have some control over your own personal spaces to make the changes you desire.
As you make your lifestyle changes, you may find yourself wanting to speak up for yourself if others comment on what you're doing, which can turn itself into a whole household debate. If you have individuals who are not on board, your words probably won't do much and can often leave you feeling more discouraged.
So here is my advice: lead by action.
( )24.What do the underlined words “jump on that bandwagon” mean in the first paragraph?
A.Share an apartment with you.
B.Join you in what you're doing.
C.Transform your way of living.
D.Help you to make the decision.
( )25.What was the attitude of the author's father towards buying groceries with jars?
A.He disapproved of it.
B.He was favourable to it.
C.He was tolerant of it.
D.He didn't care about it.
( )26.What can we infer about the author?
A.She is quite good at cooking.
B.She respects others' privacy.
C.She enjoys being a housewife.
D.She is a determined person.
( )27.What is the text mainly about?
A.How to get on well with other family members.
B.How to have one's own personal space at home.
C.How to live a zero waste lifestyle in a household.
D.How to control the budget when buying groceries.
根据画线部分前文“The chances are that if you're looking to live a more sustainable lifestyle, not everyone around you will be ready to…”及第二段中的“I've learned a few things along the way though, which I hope you'll find encouraging if you're doing your best to figure out how you can make the change in a not-always-supportive household.” 由此推知,画线词组jump on that bandwagon与B项“Join you in what you're doing.”(加入你正在做的事情。)
根据第三段中的“A few days later, I came back with my first jars of zero waste groceries, and my dad commented on how silly it was for me to carry jars everywhere. It came off as a bit discouraging.” 故选A。
根据第四段中的“Yet as the months of reducing waste continued, I did what I could that was within my own reach.” 及“Perhaps your household won't entirely make the switch, but you may have some control over your own personal spaces to make the changes you desire.”(也许你的家庭不会完全改变,但你可以控制自己的个人空间,做出你想要的改变。)
根据第一段中的“The chances are that if you're looking to live a more sustainable lifestyle, not everyone around you will be ready to jump on that bandwagon.”(如果你想过一种更可持续的生活方式,可能不是你周围的每个人都准备好加入其中。)及第二段中的“I've learned a few things along the way though, which I hope you'll find encouraging if you're doing your best to figure out how you can make the change in a not-always-supportive household.”(不过在这个过程中,我学到了一些东西,我希望如果你正在尽最大努力想办法在一个不总是支持你的家庭中做出改变,你会感到鼓舞。)

A
The biggest stadiums in the world
People have been pouring into stadiums since the days of ancient Greece. In around 8 AD, the Romans built the Colosseum, which remains the world's best known stadium and continues to inform contemporary design. Rome's Colosseum was 157 feet tall and had 80 entrances, seating 50,000 people. However, that was small fry compared with the city's Circus Maximus, which accommodated around 250,000 people.
These days, safety regulations—not to mention the modern sports fan's desire for a good view and a comfortable seat—tend to keep stadium capacities(容量)slightly lower. Even soccer fans tend to have a seat each; gone are the days of thousands standing to watch the match.
For the biggest stadiums in the world, we have used data supplied by the World Atlas list so far, which ranks them by their stated permanent capacity, as well as updated information from official stadium websites.
All these stadiums are still functional, still open and still hosting the biggest events in world sport.
Rungrado 1st of May Stadium, Pyongyang, D.P.R. Korea. Capacity: 150,000. Opened: May 1,1989.
Michigan Stadium, Ann Arbor, Michigan, US. Capacity: 107,601. Opened: October 1, 1927.
Beaver Stadium, State College, Pennsylvania, US. Capacity: 106,572. Opened: September 17, 1960.
Ohio Stadium, Columbus, Ohio, US. Capacity: 104,944. Opened: October 7, 1922.
Kyle Field, College Station, Texas, US. Capacity: 102,512. Opened: September 24,1927.
( )21.How many people could the Circus Maximus hold?
A.104,944. B.107,601.
C.About 150,000. D.About 250,000.
( )22.Of the following stadiums, which is the oldest?
A.Michigan Stadium.
B.Beaver Stadium.
C.Ohio Stadium.
D.Kyle Field.
( )23.What do the listed stadiums have in common?
A.They host big games.
B.They have become tourist attractions.
C.They were built by Americans.
D.They are favoured by architects.

C
Race walking shares many fitness benefits with running, research shows, while most likely contributing to fewer injuries. It does, however, have its own problem.
Race walkers are conditioned athletes. The longest track and field event at the Summer Olympics is the 50-kilometre race walk, which is about five miles longer than the marathon. But the sport's rules require that a race walker's knees stay straight through most of the leg swing and one foot remain in contact(接触) with the ground at all times. It's this strange form that makes race walking such an attractive activity, however, says Jaclyn Norberg, an assistant professor of exercise science at Salem State University in Salem, Mass.
Like running, race walking is physically demanding, she says. According to most calculations, race walkers moving at a pace of six miles per hour would burn about 800 calories(卡路里) per hour, which is approximately twice as many as they would burn walking, although fewer than running, which would probably burn about 1,000 or more calories per hour.
However, race walking does not pound the body as much as running does, Dr Norberg says. According to her research, runners hit the ground with as much as four times their body weight per step, while race walkers, who do not leave the ground, create only about 1.4 times their body weight with each step.
As a result, she says, some of the injuries associated with running, such as runner's knee, are uncommon among race walkers. But the sport's strange form does place considerable stress on the ankles and hips, so people with a history of such injuries might want to be cautious in adopting the sport. In fact, anyone wishing to try race walking should probably first consult a coach or experienced racer to learn proper technique, she says. It takes some practice.
( )28.Why are race walkers conditioned athletes?
A.They must run long distances.
B.They are qualified for the marathon.
C.They have to follow special rules.
D.They are good at swinging their legs.
( )29.What advantage does race walking have over running?
A.It's more popular at the Olympics.
B.It's less challenging physically.
C.It's more effective in body building.
D.It's less likely to cause knee injuries.
( )30.What is Dr Norberg's suggestion for someone trying race walking?
A.Getting experts' opinions.
B.Having a medical checkup.
C.Hiring an experienced coach.
D.Doing regular exercises.
( )31.Which word best describes the author's attitude to race walking?
A.Sceptical. B.Objective.
C.Tolerant. D.Conservative.
根据第二段“But the sport's rules require that a race walker's knees stay straight through most of the leg swing and one foot remain in contact(接触) with the ground at all times.”
根据最后一段“…some of the injuries associated with running, such as runner's knee, are uncommon among race walkers.”
根据最后一段中“In fact, anyone wishing to try race walking should probably first consult a coach or experienced racer to learn proper technique, she says.”

Stand up and exercise, everybody!
Everybody! Are you tired of sitting in class all day? How about incorporating some physical activities into your daily routine? One great option is the “Stand Up and Stretch” exercise. This simple routine involves standing up from your desk, stretching your arms, legs and back, and taking a few deep breaths.
Eva spent the first week of high school trying to keep her head above water. One of the major headaches for her was finding her way in the huge school building. It was a six-story building. On each floor, hallways stretched in four directions, leading to classrooms, laboratories, and teachers offices. Somewhere in the building, there was also a library, a cafeteria, and a gym.
Having a poor sense of direction, Eva found it impossible to get around in such a huge building. All the different hallways and rooms were too much to think about, let alone commit to memory. She decided that she would memorize where her classes were and then pretend that the rest of the place didnt exist.
In her first PE class, Eva was shocked when Coach Pitt announced that everyone had to run one mile around the track outside. She searched the faces of her classmates for signs of panic. There was nothing she feared more than having to run a whole mile. To Eva, “a mile” was used to describe long distances. It was ten miles from her home to her grandfathers, and that always seemed like a long way, even in a car!
When Coach Pitt blew his whistle (哨子), Eva figured she would be left in the dust. However, while some of her classmates edged ahead, others actually fell behind. “Its just the beginning,” she thought. “Ill come in last for sure.”
Soon Eva began to breathe hard, with her heart pounding and legs shaking. Feeling desperate, Eva started using a mind trick on herself. She stopped thinking about the word “mile”. Instead, she focused on reaching the shadow cast on the track by an oak tree up ahead. Then she concentrated on jogging to the spot where the track curved (拐弯). After that, she tried to see if she could complete her first lap. One lap turned into two, then three, then four.
Paragraph 1:
When Coach Pitt said “Nice work!” to her at the finish line, Eva was surprised.
Paragraph 2:
Eva decided to use the same trick to deal with the school building.
When Coach Pitt said “Nice work!” to her at the finish line, Eva was surprised. Looking around, she realized what her coach meant. Instead of being left in the dust, she found herself among the top three. “I just cant believe it,” Eva gasped, unable to contain her excitement. Her mouth curved up into a smile and her face lit up with a sense of confidence. The mind trick had worked wonders and the word “mile” was no longer a monster for her. She felt energetic, refreshed and powerful and believed she could overcome any obstacle in her life, including her poor sense of direction.
Eva decided to use the same trick to deal with the school building. She stopped racking her brains for which direction to go. Instead, she created a detailed map of the six-story building, highlighting key landmarks with different colours. Breaking down the routes into smaller sections, she explored each day, one at a time. Days turned into weeks, and now navigating the huge building seemed like a piece of cake. This episode served as a reminder that with great determination and a clever mind trick, one can achieve anything and reach far.
When Coach Pitt said “Nice work!” to her at the finish line, Eva was surprised. She couldnt believe that she had not only completed the mile run but had also surpassed her own expectations. The feeling of accomplishment washed over her, filling her with newfound confidence. Maybe running wasnt as intimidating as she had once thought. It was a valuable lesson for Eva that sometimes, pushing through our fears and using mental tricks can help us achieve more than we ever imagined. From that moment on, Evas perspective shifted, and she began to see challenges as opportunities for growth rather than obstacles to overcome.
Eva decided to use the same trick to deal with the school building. Instead of feeling overwhelmed by its size and complexity, she would break it down into smaller, more manageable parts. Just like focusing on reaching the shadow cast on the track or the spot where the track curved, Eva would identify specific landmarks in the building to guide her way. She started by memorizing the location of her classrooms and slowly expanded her knowledge to include nearby hallways and common areas. With each successful navigation, Evas confidence grew, and she became more comfortable exploring the different floors and wings of the school. By reframing her approach and using her mind as a tool, Eva transformed her experience in the school building from confusion to empowerment.
