Known by the Nazis as the “White Mouse”, Nancy Wake is Australia’s most celebrated World War II resistance fighter.
Hearing the name the “White Mouse”, most people would imagine that Nancy was mild, and shy, but nothing could be further from the truth. Nancy Wake was a brave and fearless woman who took part in dangerous tasks to save the lives of Allied servicemen and war refugees.
As a journalist living in France, Nancy witnessed firsthand the cruelty of the Nazis and made up her mind to fight it any way she could. When the war started, Nancy helped hundreds of people escape to neutral ( 中立的) Spain. Placed on top of the Gestapo’s most-wanted list, Nancy was referred to as the “White Mouse” because of the way she slipped (溜走) through their fingers and avoided detection.
Nancy was sent to England in 1943 to join the British Special Operations Executive (SOE). She was trained in parachuting and surveillance (监视), throwing herself into these activities with strength and determination. She was later parachuted into France, where she helped organise and lead resistance fighters. On one memorable occasion she walked and cycled 500km through several German checkpoints to find a radio operator. She believed that being female allowed her to pass through checkpoints that no one else could get through.
Nancy received medals from Allied countries. The medals are displayed in the World War II gallery at the Australian War Memorial, and form a fitting tribute to this fearless woman, who passed away in 2011.
Perhaps the best words to underline Nancy Wake’s spirit came from her own lips: “I hate wars and violence. But if they come, I don’t see why we women should just wave our men a proud goodbye and then make them shoes, socks and gloves.”
4. What might most people think of Nancy Wake on hearing her nickname?
A. She was a protective woman.
B. She was gentle and easily harmed.
C. She would like to tell the truth all the time.
D. She was not afraid of being involved in a war.
5. What did Nancy Wake do at the start of the war?
A. She got a full copy of the Gestapo’s most-wanted list.
B. She helped people get away from war areas.
C. She organised and led resistance fighters.
D. She left France for Spain for good.
6. What can be learned about Nancy Wake as a female soldier?
A. She fell victim to cruelty easily.
B. She died in a parachute accident.
C. She became a successful radio operator.
D. She got past German checkpoints successfully.
7. Which of the following is probably Nancy Wake’s belief ?
A. Women can fight on the front line.
B. Women can make a great difference at home.
C. Women should be trained to support the family.
D. Women shouldn’t put themselves in high-risk situations.
C
Think of evolution (进化), and you might think of Darwin’s natural selection. But according to researchers writing in the journal BioScience, it is not our genes that are determining our current evolutionary journey. It is our culture. “Cultural evolution eats genetic evolution for breakfast,” said Zachary Wood, a researcher in ecology and environmental sciences at the University of Maine.
Although genetics drove the most fundamental changes in our evolutionary past, this process is incremental. Cultural evolution, in contrast, can occur within the time it takes to pass a law. Timothy Waring, an associate professor at the University of Maine, said, “Culture solves problems much more rapidly than genetic evolution. This suggests our species is in the middle of a great evolutionary transition.”
Cultural practices integrate everything from farming techniques and legal requirements to medical advances. Cultural evolution is not new — the transition to agriculture, for example, has seen humans move from hunter - gatherer societies to permanent settlements. But, Wood and Waring argue, the impact of cultural evolution is growing. When we see increases in our life expectancy, it is less often the result of genes and more likely the product of advancements in healthcare and other related aspects.
Still not convinced? “Ask yourself: what matters more for your personal life outcomes, the genes you are born with, or the country where you live?” said Waring. “Today, your wellbeing is determined less and less by your personal biology and more and more by the cultural systems that surround you — your community, your nation, your technologies.”
Some experts believe we are heading towards a future where all of humanity will function as a single unit, much like an ant colony (群落) does. Wood and Waring do not believe we are there yet, but predict that in the long term, culture will continue to grow in influence over human evolution until genes become secondary and are ultimately controlled by culture.
8. What does the underlined word “incremental” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Normal. B. Gradual.
C. Difficult. D. Short.
9. How does the author show the impact of cultural evolution?
A. By giving an example of medical advances.
B. By mentioning the origin of human society.
C. By citing the opinions of different researchers.
D. By highlighting cultural practices in various areas.
10. How did Waring sound in paragraph 4?
A. Confused. B. Curious.
C. Confident. D. Critical.
11. What does the last paragraph focus on?
A. The loss of human individuality.
B. The speed of cultural change.
C. The future dominance of culture.
D. The structure of an ant colony.

A group of Chinese researchers and clinical neurologists has made a new breakthrough in brain-computer interface (BCI) (脑机接口) technology, enabling 10 individuals to communicate complex Chinese sentences through their thoughts alone. The technology, currently in clinical trials, offers new hope for patients with speech loss due to conditions such as stroke.
Scientists from Shanghai-based startup INSIDE and Huashan Hospital implanted electrodes (电极) into participants with epilepsy (癫痫). After an average of just 100 minutes of training, their custom-built intelligent system read and interpreted brain activities associated with the intended speech of 54 Chinese characters in real time. Training on those characters then enabled the system to interpret 1,951 common words correctly and generate complete Chinese sentences in less than half a second, with virtually no length limit.
“Unlike English’s basic speech sounds, Chinese involves over 400 different syllables,” explains Li Meng, INSIDE’s chief scientist. The team trained on data from the world’s largest human brainwave database built by Huashan Hospital, and the AI identified basic sounds of speech with over 83 percent accuracy, according to Li.
Looking ahead, researchers envision the interpreted text allowing users to control smart environments, or even generate expressive artworks through generative AI systems. Huashan Hospital has played a key role in brain-computer interface clinical trials. In August 2024, neurosurgeons at the Hospital implanted a 256-channel flexible BCI device designed by the Shanghai-based NeuroXess into a 21-year-old female patient with epilepsy. Within 48 hours, the patient successfully engaged in table tennis and snake computer games through brain control. In June 2025, a Chinese man who had lost his arms and legs in a terrible accident 13 years ago was shown playing chess and racing games using only his mind. This followed the implantation of a BCI device developed by the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Recognizing BCI as a strategic future industry, Shanghai aims to achieve high-quality brain control and fully integrate BCI products into clinical applications by 2030.
12. What can be learned about BCI technology from Paragraph 1?
A. It improves communication skills. B. It translates thoughts into sentences.
C. It helps to treat stroke patients. D. It serves as a Chinese learning tool.
13. Which of the following best describes the training?
A. Traditional. B. Personalized. C. Thorough. D. Efficient.
14. Why does the author mention the two examples in Paragraph 4?
A. To explain the working process of BCI.
B. To show the promising future of BCI.
C. To describe the history of Huashan Hospital.
D. To display the variety of BCI devices.
15. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. AI: Controlling Games with Mind B. INSIDE: Building BCI Industry
C. Implants: Reading Brain Signals D. BCI: Giving Voice to Thought

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Kevin was pretty bored. His mother was at work, and his father had been away on business. Therefore, he was left in the care of Mrs. Hill, an old lady who lived next door. His parents had raised the 12-year-old to be a good boy. He never got into trouble, though sometimes he wanted to do risky things. Mrs. Hill was asleep. Kevin sighed (叹息) and hoped something exciting would happen. Suddenly, a movement outside caught his eye.
Mrs. Hill’s front window faced Mr. and Mrs. Green’s house across the street. The couple had both gone to work, so it was strange that someone was over there. Kevin stared at the man at their front door. Suddenly, the man jumped through an open window into the house. With his heart in his mouth, Kevin grabbed Mrs. Hill’s home phone and called the police.
Thinking that the man might get away with whatever he wanted before the police arrived, Kevin decided to do something. He rushed out of Mrs. Hill’s house and crossed the street quickly. Grabbing a branch from a cut-down tree, he jumped in through the window. “Stop right there! You must leave right now!” he called out, holding the branch with both hands.
The man froze for a second, but when he saw the skinny boy he breathed a sigh of relief. “Hey, kid, put that down. It was my home. My parents used to live here and my father’s watch was here,” he explained, trying to lift a floorboard.
At that moment, the sounds of a police car echoed (回响) in the air. The man stood up in a panic, then ran through the house toward the window and jumped out. Kevin followed out and told the arriving police officers what had happened. They pursued and arrested the man.
Kevin went back to Mrs. Hill’s house. Somehow he wasn’t sure he had done the right thing. “What if he has told the truth?” he thought to himself. The man’s words sounded pretty convincing.

(1) 续写词数应为150左右;

【答案】8. B 9. A 10. C 11. C

(问问自己:对你的个人生活结果而言,你与生俱来的基因和你生活的国家,哪个更重要?)” 以及后续明确结论“Today, your wellbeing is determined less and less by your personal biology and more and more by the cultural systems that surround you (如今,你的福祉越来越少地由个人生理因素决定,越来越多地由你周围的文化系统决定)” 可知,Waring的语气坚定且有说服力,充满自信。故选C。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据最后一段“Some experts believe we are heading towards a future where all of humanity will function as a single unit, much like an ant colony (群落) does. Wood and Waring do not believe we are there yet, but predict that in the long term, culture will continue to grow in influence over human evolution until genes become secondary and are ultimately controlled by culture. (一些专家认为,我们正在走向一个未来,所有的人类将作为一个单一的单位,就像一个蚁群一样。伍德和韦林不相信我们已经到了那个地步,但他们预测,从长远来看,文化对人类进化的影响将继续增长,直到基因成为次要的,最终由文化控制。)” 可知,该段核心聚焦于文化在未来对人类进化的主导地位。故选C。
D

第二节(满分25分)

Paragraph 2: Kevin and Mr. Green took the watch they had found to the police station.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
When Mr. and Mrs. Green got home, Kevin went to talk to them. He explained how he had witnessed the strange man entering their house and how he was arrested. Mr. and Mrs. Green listened attentively, with a mixture of surprise and gratitude on their faces. Mrs. Green hugged Kevin, thanking him for his bravery. Mr. Green, however, looked thoughtful. He asked Kevin to describe the man in detail and then revealed that the man was indeed his younger brother, who had come to retrieve a watch their father had left behind. Kevin's eyes widened in shock.
Kevin and Mr. Green took the watch they had found to the police station. On the way, Mr. Green explained that the watch was a family heirloom, passed down from generation to generation. At the police station, they explained the situation to the officers, who were surprised but understanding. The man, who had been released after his identity was verified, was waiting outside. He smiled weakly at Kevin, who felt a mix of embarrassment and relief. Mr. Green handed over the watch to his brother with a pat on the back, and they all agreed to keep in touch. Kevin learned an important lesson that day: always verify the facts before taking action, but never hesitate to help those in need.
