As a young man, I dreamed of my ideal class where students with shining eyes were curious about everything before my first teaching year. I repeatedly pictured lively debates and enthusiastic voices filling the room.
However, when I took charge of a tenth-grade English class at a New York school, reality struck. These students had struggled with their studies at their previous schools and came here for a new chance. I followed traditional teaching methods, carried out unchanging lesson plans and stuck to strict classroom rules.
At the start of the term, all the students stared blankly at textbooks. They weren’t ready to share their ideas or join in class activities. After observing this discouraging situation for weeks, I realized that strict and rigid (死板的) teaching stopped students creating new ideas and killed their interest in study, which left me wondering how I could improve my teaching.
I decided to try something completely different. So I introduced the popular novel Harry Potter as our in-class reading text and divided students into different Hogwarts teams to perform many interesting story-based group tasks. Students took part with great energy, discussed actively, shared their special thoughts and cooperated well with teammates. For the first time, the classroom was full of inspiration instead of cold rules — they felt seen, heard and valued.
From then on, my classes ran smoothly. The students’ eyes lit up with passion. They grew far more willing to share ideas actively in class, and their academic performance improved noticeably.
My first year of teaching has taught me a precious lesson. Real education never means trapping students in fixed learning modes or asking them to think in the same way. Instead, it requires teachers to leave room for students’ independent thinking and awaken their inner desire for growth. Every student has creative ideas and great potential (潜能), which can be fully developed in a free and open learning environment.
4. What’s the author’s purpose of describing his ideal class?
A. To recall his own school days. B. To prove his teaching ability.
C. To compare with the actual class. D. To describe his favorite students.
5. What was the author’s initial class like?
A. Flexible and open. B. Inactive and boring.
C. Passive and disorderly. D. Creative and relaxing.
6. What did Harry Potter-themed activities bring to the students?
A. Improvement in physical fitness. B. Wide recognition from parents.
C. A sense of identity and belonging. D. The desire to create science fictions.
7. What does the author learn from his teaching experience?
A. Practice makes perfect. B. Early birds catch the worm.
C. Applying knowledge to life is essential. D. Teaching is to inspire engagement.
C 5. B 6. C 7. D
根据第一段“As a young man, I dreamed of my ideal class where students with shining eyes were curious about everything before my first teaching year. (在我第一年教书之前,作为年轻人,我梦想着有这样一个理想班级:学生们目光明亮,对一切都充满好奇。)”和第二段“However, when I took charge of a tenth-grade English class at a New York school, reality struck.(然而,当我在纽约的一所学校负责一个十年级的英语班时,现实给了我一击。)”
根据第三段“At the start of the term, all the students stared blankly at textbooks. They weren’t ready to share their ideas or join in class activities. After observing this discouraging situation for weeks, I realized that strict and rigid (死板的) teaching stopped students creating new ideas and killed their interest in study (开学之初,所有学生都茫然地盯着课本。他们不愿意分享观点,也不愿意参加课堂活动。在观察了这个令人沮丧的情况数周后,我意识到严苛死板的教学阻碍了学生产生新想法,磨灭了他们的学习兴趣)”可推知,作者最初的课堂不活跃,十分无聊。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“So I introduced the popular novel Harry Potter as our in-class reading text and divided students into different Hogwarts teams to perform many interesting story-based group tasks. Students took part with great energy, discussed actively, shared their special thoughts and cooperated well with teammates. For the first time, the classroom was full of inspiration instead of cold rules — they felt seen, heard and valued.
根据最后一段“Real education never means trapping students in fixed learning modes or asking them to think in the same way. Instead, it requires teachers to leave room for students’ independent thinking and awaken their inner desire for growth. (真正的教育绝不是把学生困在固定的学习模式中,要求他们用一模一样的方式思考。相反,教育需要教师给学生留出独立思考的空间,唤醒他们内在的成长渴望。)”可推知,作者从这段经历中学到,教学的本质是激发学生主动参与学习,唤醒学生的内驱力。
C
Coral reefs (珊瑚礁), which support 25% of ocean species and provide income for half a billion people, are facing a global crisis. From 2024 to 2025, the northern Great Barrier Reef lost nearly a quarter of its coral cover, and 84% of reefs worldwide suffered mass bleaching (白化).
Some large projects, like the 10-million-dollar Mars Coral Reef Restoration Project, which has planted baby corals by hand since 2006 and restored about 27 acres of coral reefs at a rate of 400 meters per day, tried hard to make up for the massive loss. Yet all their work was wiped out by a serious bleaching event. “This is the first time we have been at risk of losing an entire branch of the tree of life,” says Alex, an ocean scientist.
To address this problem, scientists are turning to robotics. The Deployment Guidance System (DGS), the world’s first automated (自动化的) underwater coral planter, is changing the game. Using AI, it identifies suitable planting sites and drops baby corals in just half a second — much faster and more accurately than human divers. In addition, the DGS trounces current techniques when it comes to cost, cutting the expense dramatically from $8 per baby coral manually to merely $1 with the robot.
With ocean temperatures rising, robots are also helping scientists devote more energy to breeding (培育) corals that can fight against heat. In a Florida lab, Enochs uses robotic systems to expose corals to much warmer water, selecting the survivors to breed heat-hardy baby corals. Robots test far more samples than ever before, turning the process into a production-line operation.
Indeed, Phanor, the reef restoration program manager at CRF, points out that the problems facing coral reefs extend beyond what technology alone can solve. Addressing the underlying issues like warming oceans and pollution requires political support and community efforts.
Even so, robotic restoration still acts as a powerful temporary helper in reef protection. Time will tell whether it’ll be able to save the reefs in the long run. With determination on his face, Enochs says, “Until I see the last coral die, there is hope.”
8. Why does the author mention the Mars Coral Reef Restoration Project?
A. To highlight its great success. B. To appeal for public participation.
C. To demonstrate its limited effect. D. To showcase possible planting risks.
9. What does the underlined word “trounces” mean in paragraph 3?
A. Copies. B. Distinguishes. C. Matches. D. Outperforms.
10. What does Enochs’ lab focus on?
A. Testing a tracking device. B. Developing heat-resistant corals.
C. Cleaning polluted ocean floors. D. Raising corals in shallow water.
11. What can be the best title of the text?
A. Could Robots Save Coral Reefs?
B. Coral Bleaching: A Crisis Beyond Control
C. Will Humans Establish the New Sea Ecosystems?
D. Robotics: An Ultimate Solution to Coral Bleaching
C 9. D 10. B 11. A
根据第二段中的“Yet all their work was wiped out by a serious bleaching event. (然而他们所有的成果都被一次严重的白化事件彻底摧毁。)”可知,该大型修复项目的努力最终付诸东流,以此说明人工修复效果有限。
【9题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段中的“In addition, the DGS trounces current techniques when it comes to cost, cutting the expense dramatically from $8 per baby coral manually to merely $1 with the robot. (此外,在成本方面,DGStrounces现有技术,将人工种植每株珊瑚幼苗8美元的成本大幅降至机器人种植仅1美元。)”可知,新技术在成本上优于传统技术。故猜测trounces意为“优于,胜过”,与outperforms同义。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中的“In a Florida lab, Enochs uses robotic systems to expose corals to much warmer water, selecting the survivors to breed heat-hardy baby corals. (在佛罗里达的实验室里,伊诺克斯利用机器人系统将珊瑚置于温度高得多的水中,筛选存活的珊瑚来培育耐热珊瑚幼苗。)”可知,实验室致力于培育耐热珊瑚。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第三段中的“To address this problem, scientists are turning to robotics. (为解决这一问题,科学家们开始借助机器人技术。)”、第四段“robots are also helping scientists devote more energy to breeding corals that can fight against heat. (机器人还帮助科学家投入更多精力培育耐热珊瑚。)”以及最后一段“Even so, robotic restoration still acts as a powerful temporary helper in reef protection. Time will tell whether it’ll be able to save the reefs in the long run. (即便如此,机器人修复仅是珊瑚保护的临时得力手段,能否长期拯救珊瑚礁仍有待时间验证。)”可知,全文围绕机器人能否拯救濒危珊瑚礁展开探讨,既介绍技术优势,也点明其局限性,因此“机器人能拯救珊瑚吗?”是最佳标题。
D
Nowadays, digital communication tools such as texts, video calls and emails have become the main ways for people to keep in touch. Yet people hold different opinions about whether text-based communication can build close emotional bonds the same way voice communication (phone, video chat and voice chat) does.
To figure out how different communication forms influence interpersonal ties, researchers conducted a series of experiments. In a field experiment, participants were asked to reconnect with an old friend either over the phone or e-mail. Other laboratory participants were invited to chat with a stranger over video, voice or text-based media. Results suggested that voice communication created stronger social ties and no increase in embarrassment, compared with text-based interactions. These findings break young people’s common misunderstanding that they can stay away from the social awkwardness by preferring a more indirect environment.
A further study also proved the limitations of text-based communication. In the experiment, teenagers were divided into two groups after finishing a stressful task: One group texted their mothers for comfort, while the other made phone calls. The research found that only voice calls could bring about an obvious drop in teenagers’ stress hormones. Although text messages are not cold or meaningless, they fail to produce the same biological effect as sincere spoken words.
From a biological view, hearing a familiar warm voice through voice communication can directly calm people’s nervous system and ease stress. Text-based communication only delivers written information, lacking the real-time emotional feedback. Even carefully written comforting words cannot bring the same positive physical reaction when people face pressure and anxiety.
Overall, although digital text-based communication brings certain convenience, it can never replace spoken interaction in building real social connections. Instead of hiding behind typed words, we should make phone calls or voice chats with family and friends regularly to develop real and lasting emotional ties.
12. Why do young people favor text-based communication?
A. To adapt to modern communication rules. B. To avoid social discomfort.
C. To improve the effectiveness of exchanges. D. To strengthen social connections.
13. What can be learned from the parent-child communication study?
A. Spoken words relieve pressure better.
B. Speaking pace affects communication.
C. Text messages lack emotional expressions.
D. Stress reduces willingness to communicate.
14. What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A. Possible direction for further study.
B. Scientific explanations of the findings.
C. Comparisons of different stress levels.
D. Introduction to a new research method.
15. What does the author suggest in the last paragraph?
A. Value digital benefits. B. Type words to express feelings.
C. Prioritize voice communication. D. Focus on the art of conversation.
B 13. A 14. B 15. C

根据第二段“These findings break young people’s common misunderstanding that they can stay away from the social awkwardness by preferring a more indirect environment.(这些发现打破了年轻人普遍存在的误解,即他们可以通过选择更间接的交流方式来远离社交尴尬)”可知,年轻人喜欢文本交流是因为他们想要远离社交尴尬,避免社交带来的不适感。
根据第三段“The research found that only voice calls could bring about an obvious drop in teenagers’ stress hormones.(研究发现,只有语音通话能显著降低青少年的压力荷尔蒙水平)”可知,研究表明,语音能够更好地缓解压力。
根据第四段首句“From a biological view, hearing a familiar warm voice through voice communication can directly calm people’s nervous system and ease stress.(从生物学角度来看,通过语音交流听到熟悉的温暖声音能直接安抚人的神经系统并缓解压力)”可知,该段主要对研究结果给出了科学的解释。
根据最后一段“Instead of hiding behind typed words, we should make phone calls or voice chats with family and friends regularly to develop real and lasting emotional ties.(与其躲在打出的文字背后,我们应定期与家人朋友通话或语音聊天,以建立真实持久的情感纽带)”可知,和打字发短信相比,作者建议人们应该优先选择语音交流。

Moments of Growth
Last term, I signed up for the school speech contest but felt extremely nervous. I nearly gave up at first, afraid of standing before crowds. My teacher encouraged me to keep practicing every day. I repeated my speech hundreds of times and corrected my pronunciation again and again.
On the competition day, I took a deep breath and finished my talk smoothly. Though I didn’t win first prize, I gained great courage. This experience teaches me that fear is not unbeatable. Persistence helps us break through ourselves and grow stronger little by little.

The summer holiday finally arrived. Twelve-year-old Lucas was wild with excitement at the thought of spending the coming two months at his grandparents’ country house.
Early in the morning, the car set off, packed with Lucas’s hiking essentials. He bounced (蹦) in the backseat, talking nonstop to his parents about all the fun he and Grandpa had planned last Christmas. He talked about the woods and the secret waterfall Grandpa had promised to explore with him.
At last, the familiar driveway came into view, leading to the old red farmhouse with colorful climbing roses. Grandma was standing at the gate, waving happily. Before the car even stopped, Lucas ran over to hug her tightly. Then he grabbed his backpack and ran through the door, shouting cheerfully, “Grandpa! Here I am!”
To Lucas’s astonishment, Grandpa was sitting in a wheelchair, his face looking pale and saliva (口水) streaming out of his mouth. A walking stick was leaning against the wall. Lucas froze on the spot, speechless. At the sight of Lucas in front of him, Grandpa struggled to stand up, but in vain. A painful expression appeared on his face. “Grandpa, how come? You were so strong and healthy!” Lucas said with tears in his eyes. Grandma explained that Grandpa had suffered a stroke (中风) three weeks earlier and had difficulty moving around. The doctor said exercise was a must for his recovery. But Grandpa couldn’t bear such a blow, feeling discouraged and depressed. He refused to exercise, thinking all this was of no use. Lucas’s heart sank.
After lunch, Lucas stood in the doorway, staring at the edge of the woods. Memories came flooding in. As a child, he often fell asleep on Grandpa’s broad and strong back as they headed home after their fun outing. When he learned to ride a bike, Grandpa always accompanied him, guiding him around until he made it. Grandpa’s encouraging words were ringing in his ears, “Don’t panic. Hold on and you’ll do better.” So Lucas was determined to do something for Grandpa.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The first thing was to encourage him to get back on his feet. Sitting beside Grandpa gently, Lucas shared their previous happy adventures in the woods and reminded him of their unfulfilled waterfall plan. He told Grandpa firmly that nothing was impossible with persistence. To cheer Grandpa up, Lucas accompanied him to do simple walking exercises every day. He held Grandpa’s arm tightly, patiently supporting him step by step and constantly giving him warm encouragement. Whenever Grandpa felt tired and wanted to give up, Lucas would comfort and motivate him.
Eventually, Grandpa was able to walk a long distance. Gradually, Grandpa regained his strength and confidence, no longer feeling depressed. One fine morning, they finally walked into the woods together. Bathed in soft sunshine, they enjoyed the fresh air and beautiful scenery. Grandpa wore a big smile on his face, expressing gratitude to Lucas. It was Lucas’s company and perseverance that helped him walk out of despair and regain hope for life.
