China's rich intangible cultural heritage (ICH)is vividly preserved in specialized
museums that showcase age-old crafts and traditions. Here are three renowned institutions
offering profound cultural insights.
China National Arts and Crafts Museum (Beijing)
Established in 2022,the museum stands on Beijing's Central Axis, also called China

how this luxurious textile, named for its cloud-like beauty, has evolved while preserving
cultural essence.
Puzhen Bai Ethnic Tie-Dye Museum (Yunnan)
It showcases tie-dye,a UNESCO-listed craft.Located in Dali,it displays both traditional
and contemporary works, from indigo-dyed fabrics to innovative designs. What sets it apart is
interactive experiences:visitors can try tying and dyeing fabrics themselves, engaging directly
with the "zhahua"technique. The museum preserves the Bai people's ecological dyeing

My cat Jean-Philippe is what you might charitably describe as big-boned'.
I adopted Phil when he was about six months old. Before he came to my house,he had
been living with a couple of other kittens out on the street. When I moved into a fourth-floor
apartment,he became a full-time indoor foodie.I usually call him Fat Phil.I love him,but he is
basically a meat loaf with fur.I finally realized things were getting out of control when he
outgrew his cat carrier and I was forced to buy one built for a medium-sized dog.
To make sure that Phil would stick around for as long as possible,I knew I needed to
make some changes to his diet-whether or not he was fully on board with them.Although
Fat Phil needed to become Slim Phil, losing weight too quickly could be dangerous.I was sent
by Phil's doctor to a website that calculates how many calories a day a cat needs to consume to
lose weight at a healthy pace. This is when I learnt that you apparently need to understand
advanced algebra (to count cat-food calories.
Phil eats a combination of raw,treeze-dried,and canned food, and he began his diet at
270 calories a day.Have you ever tried to figure out the calories in your cat's favourite brands
of food? Some don't include the information on the label Others givc it in tiny print.Or they
publish it in terms that require you to figure out.say, that if 450 grams of freeze-dried chicken
biscuits contain 125 calories,a kitchen cup weighs about 700 grams, and 50 biscuits fit in a cup,
each biscuit has...wait...
I have to keep reminding myself that this is the very best diet for cats, according to
doctors. And finally! After more than a year,Phil's daily intake has been reduced to 250
calories.
But it's an ongoing struggle. He's a hardened food thief.Ile starts pushing for dinner at
about Ip.m.,sometimes rising up on his legs and tapping me on the shoulder with his front
paw as I sit at my computer. If he had a watch,he'd be pointing at it.Resisting his most sincere
requests takes as much self-control as I can develop, but I persist. And any month now,my boy
is going to slim down that dog-sized body and become the size of a very large cat
44.Which of the following phrases refer to the same meaning as "big-boned"?

Screen time is on the rise for people aged 65 and older.According to global research firm
GWI,older people are more likely to own tablets, smart TVs,e-readers and computers than
those under 25.
Why these two groups of people turn to their phones varies greatly?Older adults tend to
be less engaged with social media.especially visual platforms like YouTube."They use them
for more practical purposes.A lot of it is just following the news or getting information,"says
Ipsit Vahia,&geriatric(老年医学的)psychologist at McLean Hospital. He notes that in his
family circles, the overuse of messaging apps like WhatsApp is common and these apps do
offer a broad connection aspect, allowing them to communicate with groups.
So,is this rise in screen time a bad thing?Vahia says for older adults who may be unable
to drive well, technology can be a boon-helping people continue to explore the world
instead of being stuck at home.In a case like that, older people can be more independent and
still engaged with the outside world.Another area of technology he's excited to see expand into
an aging population:Virtual reality,which is"under-tapped and under--utilized(开发不足)”,
because of its potential for therapy,to open up patients who cannot or will not talk about the
past-but need to.He's seen it in his own patients. But he's also aware that with an overall
rise in screen use, that could spell a rise in addiction, misinformation, and scams.
Where younger adults tend to become isolated after overusing smartphones, older adults
tend to turn to phones after cognitive declines or being isolated from family and friends. For
Vahia, all these differences are a reminder that everyone is different-what drives someone to
behave a certain way depends on many factors."There's no simple answer to seniors'rising
screen time,"says Vahia."It is merely a new reality of aging in the modern world."To accept
this reality is not to leave it untouched-we owe older adults more than a screen.
48 Why do older adults use screens according to the text?
A.To kill time and relieve boredom.
B.To facilitate face-to-face communication.
C.To get updates and maintain social bonds.
D.To bridge the generation gap with younger people.
49.What does the underlined word "boon"in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Heavy burden.
B.Hidden risk.
C.Modern inconvenience.
D.Great benefit.

Humans are hard-wired to maximize pleasure and minimize pain,so it makes sense that
our first instinct (would be to avoid negative experiences. However, this approach tends
to backfire.
A simple practice can well prove it.Bring to mind an embarrassing memory. Then set a
timer for 60 seconds and don't think about it until the timer goes off.How'd.it go?You
probably haven't thought of that memory in years, but now it comes up repeatedly. Here's why
this happens:When you tell yourself something is bad enough to avoid, your brain checks in to
make sure you're succeeding with this task, bringing to mind the thoughts you were trying to
push away.
The same happens with emotions. My client David felt constantly on edge, already
forecasting everything that might go wrong. To avoid these feelings,he often procrastinated
)on projects, telling himself he'd get to them when he was in the"right"headspace. But
avoidance only made him more anxious.Deadlines piled up,and when he finally worked,he
had less time and more fear of incompetence.
Procrastinating is just one of countless forms of avoidance. For you,it might look like
asking for reassurance before a decision, scrolling on your phone to tune out your thoughts,
pouring a drink to take the edge off,or checking your emails five times for mistakes. These
behaviors communicate that you can't handle strong feelings. And,because no one can outrun
their emotions forever, they seem even bigger when they break through.
Since avoidance is what's keeping the cycle of negative emotions going, the goal isn't to
push them away. It's to change how you respond.Start by noticing the urge to avoid. From
there, act in a different way.If you procrastinate, work on the task for just five minutes. If you
seek reassurance, sit with uncertainty longer. Each time you face a feeling instead of avoiding it,
you gather new evidence:I can handle this.Over time, that evidence begins to weaken the
belief that your emotions are something you need to escape.
52.Why does the embarrassing memory come up repeatedly?
A.People fail to control their casual thinking
B.Human brains keep tracking the avoidance task.

A.Wait until you feel icndy

Girls are Starting Puberty(青春期)Younger
More girls are hitting puberty at eight or earlier.Researchers are exploring the causes,
the consequences and what should be done.(by Cassandra Willyard)
When Lola was eight years old,she went through a massive growth spurt and started
developing acne and a visit to an endocrinologist in 2023 confirmed that Lola's brain was
already producing hormones that had kick-started puberty.Lola had also been56
emotionally."She would have panic attacks every day at school,"says Elise, who lives in
Minneapolis,Minnesota
Although eight might seem young to start puberty,it's not as rare as it once was.Data
show that girls around the world are entering puberty younger than before. Some research hints
that the 57 mysteriously accelerated during the COVID-19 pandemic.(Although some
data suggest that puberty is happening earlier for boys too,the 58 seems to be less
pronounced.)
Scientists have found a 59 of possible drivers for this change, with increasing body
weight and obesity almost certainly playing a part. Some researchers suspect that 60 to

hormone-disrupting chemicals or stress during childhood could be pushing puberty earlier, but
studies have produced 6 results. The trend has prompted the international organization
the Endocrine Society to develop clinical-practice guidelines on puberty,to be published in
mid-2026.The guidelines will reconsider how to treat girls on the border between 62 and
precocious'puberty ()which has commonly been 63 as before the age of eight in
girls, but that some specialists argue it should be younger.
Research over the past few years is also making the health risks of early puberty
increasingly clear.Studies have linked it to greater risk of conditions including obesity, heart
disease, depression and anxiety.Other research suggests that children who go through puberty
earlier are more likely to experience intense 64 because of their race or ethnicity,or
otherwise be treated differently from their peers.
Families, researchers and clinicians are now trying to work out how best to adapt and
when to intervene. This might involve medications to pause the process, but also better support
and puberty education for children to protect them from some of the psychological and 65
risks."We want to intervene right in that moment before people start internalizing some of
those feelings of being othered,"says Michael Curtis,a family social scientist at the University
of Minnesota in Minneapolis.

I could feel the excitement rising in me as I held the beautifully wrapped present in my
hands.Unable to contain my curiosity any longer,I opened it quickly. It was a brand-new
laptop.I had scored straight As for my O-level examinations and this was my reward.I had
always envied my friends who were exchanging news about“chat rooms'”,“instant messaging'”
and"emailing",all of which I knew nothing about. Now I was going to find out.
It started out simply enough.I was searching for some information online when I came
across a social networking site.Soon I became glued to my new-found electronic friend.I
began to spend more and more time on YouTube and became enslaved by Facebook and Twitter.
I had never imagined that the day would come when I would be so focused on the glowing
screen before me.
As time passed,I realized that I was hooked on the Internet.During weekends, when I
had more time on my hands,I could easily spend a few hours on my laptop. It came to a point
where I chose to lock myself in my room, refusing to come out and take part in family
discussions.I preferred to stay connected to the people I befriended in online space although I
had never met them.Soon,my sleep was reduced to only scattered (naps, and my
grades at school also began getting worse.
It was about this time that my parents started voicing their disapproval. It became
obvious to them that I was spending too much time on the Internet.I was asked to reduce my
usage of the internet.Yet,however hard I tried,I was unable to pull myself away, unable to
terminate (my chat sessions, and unable to concentrate on my lessons.I was desperate
