Last Tuesday, our class had a lesson about memory in the school science lab. Before the class, our teacher, Ms. Chen, asked us to close our eyes and try to remember every object in the room. She wanted to see ______ 11 ______ we paid attention to details.

To my surprise, I only remembered 12 items. I wondered ______ 13 ______ my deskmate could remember 18. He said it was because he grouped similar items together in his mind.
After that, Ms. Chen introduced how the brain processes memory. She said, “Information ______ 14 ______ into short-term memory first. If you review it, it moves to long-term memory.” She also advised us ______ 15 ______ a memory journal to record what we learned each day.
Before the bell rang, Ms. Chen asked, “Can you guess ______ 16 ______?” We shook our heads. “Tomorrow we will invite a grandfather ______ 17 ______ has an amazing memory to share his secrets!” We all cheered loudly. Do you know why you can still remember your childhood phone number but forget where you put your keys five minutes ago? Scientists say this is because of the difference between “automatic memory” and “active memory”.
Automatic memory stores information we use very often, like our home address, parents’ names, or how to ride a bike. We don’t need to try to remember these things—our brain keeps them forever because we use them again and again. That’s why you can still sing the alphabet song(字母歌)even if you haven’t sung it for years.
Active memory, however, needs attention. It holds new information for a short time, like a shopping list or a new classmate’s name. If we don’t focus on it or repeat it, it disappears quickly. For example, if someone tells you a phone number and you don’t write it down or say it aloud, you’ll probably forget it in 20 seconds.
A study at Harvard University found that active memory can hold about 7 pieces of information at a time. But this changes if we use “chunking”(组块法). Chunking means grouping small bits of information into larger units. For example, remembering a 10-digit number like 13812345678 is hard. But if you break it into chunks—138-1234-5678—it becomes much easier. This is why memory champions often use chunking to remember long lists of words or numbers.
Interestingly, stress and lack of sleep can hurt active memory. When we are worried or tired, our brain can’t process new information well. So, if you want to remember something important, stay calm and get enough rest! Understanding how these two types of memory work can help us study smarter and avoid forgetting things in our daily lives.
20. What is the main difference between automatic memory and active memory?
A. Automatic memory lasts long, while active memory is short-lived.
B. Active memory stores phone numbers, while automatic memory stores names.
C. Automatic memory needs attention, while active memory doesn’t.
D. Active memory is used for riding bikes, while automatic memory is not.
21. Why can we still remember our childhood phone number?
A. Because it is stored in active memory.
B. Because we use it very often.
C. Because it is easy to remember.
D. Because we wrote it down many times.
22. What does the underlined word “disappears” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. 出现 B. 储存 C. 消失 D. 重复
23. According to the passage, what is “chunking”?
A. Repeating information again and again.
B. Breaking large units into small bits.
C. Grouping small bits into larger units.
D. Writing down information quickly.
24. What is the best title for the passage?
A. How to Remember Phone Numbers Quickly
B. The Importance of Sleep for Memory
C. Automatic Memory vs. Active Memory
D. A Study on Memory Champions
