One day in June 2024, I pulled a large box down from the attic (阁楼). Inside were tons of letters. They were from my friend, Steph.
We have kept in touch for nearly 60 years. We started writing to each other when we were in middle school. Our letters were on different kinds of paper: lined and unlined. To remember the past better, we decided to turn all that paper into something more meaningful.
One Sunday morning last autumn, we met at my house for a read-through (对台词). Before Steph arrived, I carefully set the scene (场景). I played our favorite song in the background. Like actors in a play, we took turns reading aloud our words. The lines reminded us that we called each other “sweetie pie”.
That first day, we went through two years in eight hours. By that age, we had become wiser teenagers. We wrote complete sentences in cursive (连笔字). We talked about famous singers a lot.
Steph and I supported each other with letters through early marriage and motherhood, the death of my father, our early careers and the death of her father. There were phones, but they were too expensive for us to use then, so we continued to write. As time went on, the letters became more and more.
Now, the letters are kept in a beautiful box in my study. Steph and I are going to read them again in ten years. We each also wrote a new secret note and put them in the box. We will read them then.
6. When did the writer and Steph start writing to each other?
A. In 2024. B. Last autumn. C. Ten years ago. D. In middle school.
7. Why did the writer play their favorite song before Steph arrived?
A. To teach Steph a new song. B. To show off their music collection.
C. To make the reading more enjoyable. D. To prepare for a singing performance.
8. Why did they mainly use letters instead of phones?
A. They liked writing cursive better. B. Phones were too expensive.
C. Letters were faster to send. D. Phones didn’t exist at that time.
9. What will the writer and Steph do in ten years?
A. Read the new secret notes they wrote. B. Write more letters to each other.
C. Throw away the old letters. D. Send the letters to their children.
10. What may be the best title of the passage?
A. The old attic B. The meaningful past C. A true friendship D. A future secret

How do you greet your friends? People from different cultures have different answers: shaking hands, nodding, bowing, kissing on the face.
But have you ever wondered how animals “say hello” to each other? Here are some examples.
Everyone knows how similar chimpanzees (黑猩猩) are to humans. So it’s no surprise that their greetings are also close to ours. The most common ways of greeting between chimpanzees are hand touching and hugging. Sometimes they also kiss each other. Some chimpanzees can even learn simple sign language.
Giraffes make few loud sounds. Their necks can reach two meters in length, making them useful in greeting each other. When two giraffes meet, they may “shake” their necks and rub (摩擦) them against each other. This is to feel how strong and tall the other is.
Dolphins greet one another with whistles (哨声). They can hear other dolphins from many kilometers away. Every dolphin has a different whistle. When two groups of dolphins meet, they each choose a member to “talk” to the other group. The two groups can then travel together. Unlike most of the other animals, dolphins are smart enough to learn a new language by making and copying new sounds.
11. Chimpanzees may NOT greet each other by ________.
A. whistling B. hugging C. kissing D. hand touching
12. Why do giraffes rub their necks when they meet?
A. To reach taller trees. B. To make loud sounds.
C. To know about each other. D. To fight with each other.
13. What makes dolphins different from most of the other animals?
A. They can use special whistles to greet each other.
B. They can hear sounds from several kilometers away.
C. They can pick members to communicate with other groups.
D. They can learn new languages by making and copying sounds.
14. Which of the following is TRUE?
A. Giraffes are about two meters tall.
B. Dolphins can hear each other from far away.
C. Most animals can learn a new language.
D. Chimpanzees can speak simple words.
15. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Different ways of human greetings.
B. How animals communicate with humans.
C. Similarities between animals and humans.
D. Different greeting methods of different animals.
A 12. C 13. D 14. B 15. D

根据文章第四段“They can hear other dolphins from many kilometers away.”

后文“I could not help crying because I was afraid that my classmates...”
根据“I was afraid ...”
固定句型It is time for…

I was an eighth-grader without ever really learning how to read. I had no confidence and was afraid of being laughed at. Hopefully, an amazing teacher appeared.
After asking me to read aloud in class, Ms. Powell noticed that I was nervous. She quickly let another student do the task and asked me if she could take me to the nurse’s office, saying that I looked a little pale. Even though I was not sick, I followed her.
Ms. Powell never knew reading was a challenge for her husband until two weeks before he passed away (去世). She promised to teach him but he told her, “Teach someone who really needs you.” She looked for that person for some time.
Then she asked a little girl to read and discovered her problem. That girl was me. Meeting me in the hallway, she said, “I’m here to help solve your problem.” Shamefully, I told her I couldn’t read. “There is no need to feel sorry,” she said. She promised me that efforts could solve my problem. Over the course of the next year, Ms. Powell spent her spare time teaching me. It was difficult, but through many tears, I could finally read.

12. Why do giraffes rub their necks when they meet?

Travellers visiting the Great Wall can now enjoy a modern dining experience. They can receive their lunch delivered (配送) by air on the Great Wall if they like.
Since August 16, 2024, drones (无人机) have been delivering food to visitors at the Badaling area of the Great Wall. The service is provided by Meituan.
Visitors scan a QR code (二维码) to get into the app. There are many restaurants and shops at the foot of the Great Wall on the app. Then they can order food and other goods, such as drinks and medicines. These things will be delivered quickly in just about five minutes.
The drones can carry up to 2.3 kilograms every time, according to Meituan. The delivery fee (费用) is just 4 yuan. The visitors can place orders from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Outside working hours, these drones will be used to carry rubbish to recycling stations.
But the drones still need human help. As soon as a visitor places an order, the app will receive it. Then a Meituan worker will pick it up from a nearby store or restaurant. The delivery is then brought to the rooftop (屋顶) of the Badaling Hotel. There it will be put into a box and tied (捆绑) to the drone.
