“I have a cold. I’m supposed to be going away with a friend in 10 days but I’m worried I won’t be well enough. What do I do? Should I tell her now or leave it and see what happens?”
A few years ago, this is the sort of question I would have taken to my mum or a friend. The sort of question where you’re pretty sure you know the answer but you just want a bit of reassurance. Today I sat with this question for a few minutes and then took it to ChatGPT. Because somehow that’s what I do now.
So far this month I have asked ChatGPT to advise on my workout plan, to get me out of a delaying habit, to analyze my Hinge (约会软件) profile, to write a presentation for me, to rewrite an email because I wasn’t sure of the wording, to find a piece of research I half remembered and to sense check a pitch I was doing. I’m sure there’s more but I’d have to ask ChatGPT for a full list because I don’t trust my memory.
I’ve been on a journey with AI but now I’m at the point where I allow it to be my first port of call whenever things are slightly uncomfortable, when I’m seeking reassurance. And it’s here I think the problem lies. ChatGPT has become my emotional regulator and just like that my life is easier but I’m also starting to lose my sense of clarity. Just as sailors stopped relying on the stars when radar became available, so I’ve stopped relying on my intuition now that a robot has stepped in.
You see, I knew the answer to most of the things I asked it this month but I wanted reassurance. And that feels bad. I don’t know if AI is making us lazy or stupid or dependent but I do know it’s making me less sure of myself. And I also know that I didn’t spend this long learning to listen to my own intuition rather than the demands of a patriarchal society, just to hand that wisdom over to a man-made robot.
4. What did the author do years ago when in doubt?
A. She waited till the end. B. She asked her mum or a friend.
C. She looked online right away. D. She tried things on her own.
5. What did she use ChatGPT for this month?
A. Tech problems and music. B. Trip planning and research paper.
C. Language learning and workout plan. D. Dating profile and presentation draft.
6. What does the underlined words “emotional regulator” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Controlling feelings. B. Improving logic. C. Storing memory. D. Processing data.
7. What can we infer about the author from paragraph 5?
A. She feels less confident. B. She trusts her intuition more than AI.
C. She uses AI only for small things. D. She fears AI’s replacement of human advice.
C
Bees have incredibly fascinating lives. Now a new two-part documentary series, Secrets of the Bees, is offering an up-close look at the insects’ world and their remarkable intelligence. It premieres (首映) on National Geographic on March 31 at 8 p. m. It will arrive on Disney and Hulu the next day.
The series was filmed over three years, and a team of scientists and filmmakers worked in locations such as the Amazon jungle, an almond orchard in California, and a lab in Colorado. They also monitored 15 different hives (蜂巢). They captured never-before-seen footage (镜头) of how bees move, work, and communicate by using equipment such as tiny sensors and powerful close-up camera lenses. Because the footage is taken from a bee’s perspective, viewers will see how an ordinary daisy can look as tall as a skyscraper. The crew also used cameras that filmed up to 2,000 frames per second. Played slowly, the footage allows viewers to observe movements that are usually too fast for the human eye to see.
The series is narrated by award-winning wildlife filmmaker Bertie Gregory. One on-camera expert is National Geographic Explorer and entomologist, a scientist who studies insects. Dr. Samuel Ramsey, who also served as a scientific adviser to the show. He told The Week Junior that the goal of the series is to “take an organism that people feel like they know everything about, and then show them a different advantage point.”
In the show, Ramsey visits a lab and sees an experiment in which bees are given puzzles and balls. “I could see that bees have personality,” he said. “They play, and they even solve puzzles and pass that information on from bee to bee.” Ramsey said one of the most memorable scenes in the series shows bees dealing with a hornet (大黄蜂) that invades a hive. After surrounding the hornet, the bees vibrate to generate heat, killing the invader. “It’s incredible,” he said.
Ramsey hopes the viewers will be inspired by the insects, whose behavior in their colonies is similar to humans’; “There are a lot of individuals—they all have different jobs, ages, and companions, but they are all working together toward a common goal,” he said. “This documentary shows the importance of maintaining individuality and what can be achieved when you work together.”
8. What can be known about Secrets of the Bees?
A. Bees have attractive lives. B. Bees have the highest intelligence.
C. We can further understand bees. D. We will see the series on March 31 on Disney.
9. What is the primary goal of the documentary series?
A. To reveal the threats faced by bees.
B. To demonstrate the latest filming technologies.
C. To teach viewers how to increase bees’ populations.
D. To present a fresh and surprising perspective on bees.
10. What can be concluded from Ramsey’s description of bee behavior?
A. It focuses on the biological structure of bees.
B. It highlights the intelligence and social nature of bees.
C. It compares the habitats of bees with that of other insects.
D. It warns about the decreasing number of bees worldwide.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Scientists’ Protection of Bees B. An Expert’s View on Bees
C. Challenges of Filming Bees in the Wild D. A Documentary Exploring Bees’ Intelligence

第二节 (满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I still remember the old house at the end of our street. Its yellow walls had faded over time, the gate creaked (嘎吱作响) whenever the wind blew, and the tiled (铺瓦的) roof looked as though it had not been repaired for years. An old woman named Betty lived there alone, and to us, she seemed distant and a little frightening.
My friends — Ethan and Andy — and I used to play in the street every afternoon. One day, our tennis ball accidentally fell into Betty’s garden. We waited for her to throw it back, but she never did. This happened several times, and each time, we lost another ball. Eventually, curiosity overcame fear. One evening, we climbed over the wall to fetch our balls. Just as we landed in the garden, we noticed long shadows stretching across the ground. When we looked up, we saw Betty standing silently at her door. We all ran away, too scared to stay any longer. After that, we avoided playing near her house.
A few days later, we saw a postman delivering a letter to Betty. She took it quickly and shut the gate without saying much. Curious, Andy stopped the postman and asked what the letter was. He explained that it was a birthday card sent by her insurance company. Ethan exclaimed in wonder, “How lonely it must feel to have no one remember your birthday.” Then Andy suggested that perhaps we could do something for her. I proposed that we bake a cake. At first, the idea seemed strange, but the thought of making and eating a cake quickly excited everyone.
We decided to bake the cake at Andy’s house because her mother was always patient with us, even when we made a mess. We each contributed some pocket money to buy ingredients. The baking process was far from perfect. We spilled flour, broke eggs clumsily, and argued over small things. In the end, we managed to produce a slightly uneven cake.
注意:(1) 续写词数应为150个左右;
(2) 请按如下格式作答。
Carrying the cake carefully, we walked toward Betty's house.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Betty returned, cut the cake, and gave each of us a slice.

【答案】Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to express my preference regarding the two optional courses to be offered this semester. Between Career planning for high school students and The art of flower arranging, I would choose Career planning.
My reasons are as follows. First, as teenagers, we are about to face crucial decisions — choosing university majors and future jobs. A career planning course can help us understand our strengths, interests, and the real demands of different professions. Second, it guides us to set reasonable goals early and make full use of our high school years. While flower arranging is artistic and relaxing, career planning is more practical and far-reaching for our personal development.
Thank you for considering my opinion.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

【答案】 Carrying the cake carefully, we walked toward Betty’s house. The creaking gate made our hearts race, but we didn’t turn back. Betty opened the door, her face unreadable. “We... we baked this for your birthday.” I stammered, holding out the slightly uneven cake. For a moment, she just stared. Then, to our surprise, a soft smile crossed her lips. She stepped aside and gestured for us to enter. The house smelled of old wood and tea. Betty quietly left the room, returning with a knife.
Betty returned, cut the cake, and gave each of us a slice. “No one has remembered my birthday for years,” she whispered, her eyes glistening. We ate in warm silence. From that day on, Betty became our friend. She gave back all our lost tennis balls and shared stories of her youth. We learned that behind every lonely face lies a heart that longs for kindness — and that a simple act of courage can turn fear into friendship.
