Scientists use the “mark test” to test whether an animal can recognize itself. A mark is put on an animal, usually in a place that can only be seen in a mirror. Then the animal is allowed to look in a mirror. If the animal seems to pay attention to the mark, scientists believe the animal has recognized itself. The list of animals who can recognize themselves in a mirror isn’t long. The skill has mainly been found in animals with large brains, like dolphins, chimpanzees and elephants. Until recently, only one kind of bird had passed the test. Scientists at the University of Bonn in Germany recently ran the mark test on roosters. They put a pink triangle (三角形) on the chests of the roosters. But when the roosters looked in a mirror, they didn’t seem to notice the mark. The scientists then needed a different way to test whether the roosters could recognize themselves. When there’s danger—like a hawk (鹰) flying above—roosters make loud calls to warn nearby chickens. But roosters only make the cries if other chickens can hear them. If they’re alone, they remain quiet so the hawk won’t see them. The scientists realized that they could use the shadow (影子) of a hawk to test whether or not the roosters thought they were alone— even when they could see “another” chicken in a mirror. First, the scientists let the roosters spend time getting used to being in a closed-in space and having a mirror around. Then, they ran several tests by making a hawk shadow appear above a rooster and watching how it reacted (反应). When there was no mirror, the roosters reacted as usual. It called out when it was near another rooster, but remained quiet when it was alone. But when a rooster was in a space where it could see itself in the mirror, it wasn’t fooled into thinking there was another rooster. It remained silent under the hawk shadow. It did this even if there was a rooster hidden behind the mirror. The scientists say the results show that the roosters knew they were seeing themselves in the mirror, and not other roosters. 29. What is the purpose of the “mark test”? A. To find out if an animal can recognize itself. B. To test if an animal can mark itself with a mirror. C. To see if an animal can see the mark in the mirror. D. To check if an animal with a large brain is cleverer than others. 30. Why did the scientists change their test method? A. Roosters have passed the mark test easily. B. The hawk shadow test was easier to prepare. C. The mark test can’t be used on birds at all. D. The mark test didn’t work well on roosters. 31. What does the underlined word “them” refer to? A. Hawks. B. Chickens. C. Roosters. D. Scientists. 32. What proved that roosters can recognize themselves in a mirror? A. The mark test. B. The hawk shadow test. C. The reaction of hawks. D. The test result of other birds. 33. What can we infer from the passage? A. Roosters prefer to make no sounds when they face danger alone. B. Roosters are not as smart as dolphins, chimpanzees and elephants. C. The mark test can exactly tell if an animal can recognize itself in the mirror. D. When seeing its image in the mirror, the rooster thinks there’s another rooster. 【答案】29. A 30. D 31. C 32. B 33. A 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇科普说明文,介绍科学家先使用标记测试检验动物自我识别能力,公鸡无法通过该测试,于是科学家利用鹰的影子设计新实验,最终证明公鸡能够认出镜子里的自己。 【29题详解】 根据第二段“Scientists use the ‘mark test’ to test whether an animal can recognize itself.”可知,标记测试的目的是检验动物是否能认出自身。 【30题详解】 根据第四段与第五段“But when the roosters looked in a mirror, they didn’t seem to notice the mark. The scientists then needed a different way to test whether the roosters could recognize themselves.”可知,公鸡在标记测试中没有反应,该测试对公鸡无效,因此科学家更换了测试方法 【31题详解】 根据第六段“When there’s danger—like a hawk flying above—the roosters make loud calls to warn nearby chickens. But roosters only make the cries if other chickens can hear them. If they’re alone, they remain quiet so the hawk won’t see them.”可知,公鸡独处时会保持安静,避免鹰发现自己,此处代词them指代前文的roosters。 【32题详解】 根据第七段与最后一段“The scientists realized that they could use the shadow of a hawk to test whether or not the roosters thought they were alone...The scientists say the results show that the roosters knew they were seeing themselves in the mirror, and not other roosters.”可知,鹰影子对照实验的结果证明公鸡可以在镜子中认出自己,标记测试对公鸡无效。 【33题详解】 根据第六段“If they’re alone, they remain quiet so the hawk won’t see them.”可推断,公鸡独自面对危险时不会发出叫声。 C The sun hung low, brushing gold over the empty area. The air buzzed (喧闹)—not with insects, but with voices, cameras, and the weight of something about to begin. Roy’s heart beat like a drum. He looked out at the people gathering for the pancake house ground-breaking ceremony (仪式). Behind him stood the company men and the reporters. And under his feet—hidden underground—were the tiny burrows (洞穴) of the owls. No sign marked them. No fence protected them. They asked nothing, made no sound, yet now heavy machines waited, ready to destroy (破坏) their living area. He thought of Mullet Fingers, the wild boy who cared about animals more than himself. He thought of brave Beatrice who helped even when it was hard. Roy had tried to stay out of trouble. He liked quiet. But now, staying quiet didn’t feel right. He stepped up to the microphone (话筒). “Excuse me,” he said, voice shaking. “Before you dig... you should know the truth.” The crowd grew quiet. “There are owls living here,” Roy said. “They’re small. They’re scared. And if you build here, you’ll destroy their homes.” Someone in the crowd laughed. A reporter asked, “How do you know that?” “Because I saw them. I stood right there and watched them. They live here. They belong here. And they matter.” The manager stepped forward, “This is not your business, kid.” Roy turned to face him. His fear turned into something else—strength. “It’s my business. It’s everyone’s business. We can’t just destroy what we don’t see. Progress should not come at the cost of wonder,” he said. His hands stopped shaking. People in the crowd began whispering. One mother held her child’s hand. A teacher nodded. Even the manager looked uncertain. Roy didn’t know what would happen next. But he did what he could. He spoke the truth. Roy used to be scared. But doing the right thing made him stronger. Sometimes, doing what you can is enough to shift(改变)the wind. 34. Who did Roy think of before stepping up to the microphone? A. His teacher. B. Mullet Fingers and Beatrice. C. The manager. D. The newspaper reporters. 35. How did Roy feel when he first stepped up to the microphone? A. Calm. B. Excited. C. Scared. D. Angry. 36. Why was Roy speaking to the crowd at the ceremony? A. To protect the owls’ living area. B. To raise money for wildlife. C. To advertise the pancake house. D. To welcome people from other towns. 37. What does the underlined sentence in the passage mean? A. Extra cost should be paid to protect nature. B. There’s nothing more important than progress. C. Nature shouldn’t be destroyed for development. D. People should cut the cost of creating wonders. 38. What can we learn from Roy’s story in the passage? A. Silence sometimes speaks louder than actions. B. Finding out the truth needs patience and wisdom. C. Knowing yourself helps you make the right choice. D. Standing up for nature takes courage but it’s worth it. 【答案】34. B 35. C 36. A 37. C 38. 【34题详解】 根据文章“He thought of Mullet Fingers, the wild boy who cared about animals more than himself. He thought of brave Beatrice who helped even when it was hard.”可知,Roy在走向话筒前想到了Mullet Fingers和Beatrice。 【35题详解】 根据文章“‘Excuse me,’ he said, voice shaking.”以及后文提到的“His fear turned into something else—strength”和“Roy used to be scared”可知,Roy刚开始说话时声音颤抖,内心是恐惧害怕的。 【36题详解】 根据文章“‘There are owls living here,’ Roy said. ‘...And if you build here, you’ll destroy their homes.’”可知,Roy站出来对人群讲话是为了告诉人们这里有猫头鹰居住,如果建设会破坏它们的家,即为了保护猫头鹰的生存区域。 【37题详解】 划线句子“Progress should not come at the cost of wonder”意为“进步不应该以牺牲奇迹为代价”。 D “Wow! Look at that! Isn’t it a real fish?” The bionic (仿生) fish, named “Jinlin”, was swimming lively like a real one. It was developed by researchers at Shanghai Ocean University. This invention isn’t just for fun—it shows how humans copy nature to solve problems. That is a science called bionics. Over millions of years, animals and plants have developed smart ways to survive. For example, kingfishers are experts at moving fast between air and water with very little noise. Through their study, scientists discovered that the birds’ long beaks (喙) enabled this ability. Then they used the knowledge to change the front of the high-speed train. This change cut down noise level, increased speed by 10% and greatly saved energy. This combination (结合) of biology and engineering is the key to success in bionics. And it has set the stage for the rise of other new technologies. Driven by robotics and AI, bionics has grown rapidly. The AI-powered bionic fish “Jinlin” can be used for environmental protection and deep-sea exploration. In medicine, bionic arms can work similarly to real arms. Sensors allow the user to “feel” touch and pressure. Motors help the bionic arms make movements, like human muscles (肌肉). With AI, the bionic arms are able to “learn” new tasks and become smarter over time. These inventions are examples to show how bionics bridges biology and new technologies to solve humans’ problems. Although so much progress has been made, bionics faces challenges. Nature’s designs are hard to copy perfectly. As for bionic arms, one key area of development is Brain-Computer Interface (脑机接口). More work on direct communication between the brain and bionic arms is required to control movements as naturally as real arms. Researchers are also working on creating new materials and structures which can sense and repair themselves. While there’s still a long way to go, the future of bionics is full of possibilities. Stay hungry. Stay foolish. Maybe you’ll be the next one to change the world! 39. Why does the writer mention “Jinlin” at the beginning of the passage? A. To suggest some new ideas. B. To explain the habits of fish. C. To show the importance of bionics. D. To lead into the topic of bionics. 40. What can we learn from Paragraph 3? A. Motors allow the bionic arms to make movements. B. Sensors help bionic arms learn new tasks over time. C. The bionic fish “Jinlin” is used for medical purposes. D. Robotics and AI have developed fast because of bionics. 41. According to Paragraph 4, how would scientists make bionic arms more like real ones? ①By connecting motors with smart phones. ②By improving Brain-Computer Interface. ③By developing new materials and structures. ④By changing the shape and look of bionic arms. A. ①② B. ②③ C. ①④ D. ③④ 42. Which of the following shows the use of bionics? A. Drawing a picture of birds by watching real birds. B. Building a house with natural materials like wood. C. Designing a camera by copying some insects’ eyes. D. Learning to dance by studying monkeys’ movements. 43. What is the main idea of the passage? A. The challenges bionics is facing and how to solve them. B. The development and usage of bionics in different fields. C. The history of bionics from its invention to modern times. D. The difference between bionics and other scientific fields. 【答案】39. D 40. A 41. B 42. C 43. When I hear one thing, I only understand two.” Confucius was happy. “You are right,” he said. “I think Yan Hui is cleverer than ____54____, too!” Confucius didn’t only teach Zigong about modesty, but he showed that he himself was modest, too. Zilu and Ran Qiu were also students of Confucius. The two of them were both very good at politics, but their characters were very different. Zilu was strong and active, but Ran Qiu was slow and careful. One day, Zilu asked Confucius, “When we learn a new lesson, should we act fast?” Confucius answered, “Take your time, and ask others ____55____.” Later, Ran Qiu asked Confucius the same question. But this time, Confucius answered, “Act fast.” Another student, Gongxi Hua, heard these dialogues and, confused by Confucius giving different answers, asked him ____56____. Confucius answered, “Ran Qiu always holds back, so I tried to push him ____57____. But Zilu always runs ahead, so I tried to pull him back.” Confucius knew that his students were all different, ____58____ he needed to teach them in different ways. 【答案】49. thoughts 50. quietest 51. highly 52. Among all the passengers, no one would fail to notice Padishah, an Indian businessman. From the moment he got on the ship, he kept showing off the diamond on his turban. The big diamond successfully attracted attention, including that of the five ostriches (鸵鸟) on the deck. One morning, as Padishah passed by the ostriches, one swallowed (吞咽) his diamond suddenly. The bird ran around and mixed itself with the others in no time. “Whose are these stupid ostriches? I want my diamond back!” Padishah shouted angrily. People began to crowd on the deck. I was among the first to arrive. I didn’t feel half sorry for the man as he was asking everyone what to do about the diamond’s return. Word swept across the ship about the accident, reaching a man named Potter. After lunch in the hall, Potter went to Padishah and claimed, “I’ve got in touch with the ostriches’ owner in London. He accepted my offer for all five and now I am the owner. I have the right to keep the birds and the diamond inside.” I thought Potter was rather smart and regretted the lost chance deeply. Padishah was so upset and said, “There’s no way you can get my diamond.” he continued as he got calmer. “I can offer you 100 pounds for the birds.” Potter simply refused and left. After a while, Potter came back to the hall with a sly (狡猾的) smile. He announced that he wanted to sell four birds separately to separate people by auction (拍卖). The starting price was 80 for a bird. One of them, he would keep for himself. Before the crowd realized what was happening, a diamond businessman got one bird for 100 pounds. The prices for the following birds rose higher and higher. After the fourth was sold, Padishah got half mad, not knowing what to do. Potter seemed suddenly sorry and said, “I should have kept them all. But... Trust me! The last bird must be the one.” I stared at the last bird for quite a while and asked Potter for a private conversation. After a long talk, I finally got the bird for 700 pounds. ________ The next morning, I was waiting in line to get off the ship, picturing the amazing future life in mind. Then, I saw Padishah and Potter walk arm in arm on the shore, just like old friends. At that moment, I learnt a lesson worth a diamond. 69. In which part of a magazine can we probably read the text? A. News. B. Photo. C. Story. D. Advertisement. B A new study suggests that roosters can recognize themselves in a mirror (镜子). C The sun hung low, brushing gold over the empty area. D “Wow!
