It seemed that the hedgehog couldn’t get out.

While I was growing up, I spent each summer with my grandma. Grandma loved to cook. Every morning, I would jump out of bed, get dressed, and hurry downstairs. Grandma was always in the kitchen.
But her special gift was hospitality. Often, the neighbor ladies would stop in to visit, and Grandma was never too busy to sit and talk with them. Grandma always had homemade cookies. We all enjoyed Grandma’s sweet spirit.
For holiday meals, the dining table, with Grandma’s white lace tablecloth, was covered with home-cooked foods. I felt so special being a dinner guest and eating on that pretty tablecloth.
Grandma left the lace tablecloth for me when she passed away. At first I put it away to keep it safe. But when I thought about Grandma, I could almost hear her say, “Use it! Enjoy it!” So, I started bringing it out for special family and holiday meals.
I brought it along when our neighbor moved into their new apartment. I spread it over their table and served vegetable soup and homemade bread. Another time, after three new families moved onto our street, I invited them to my home one evening. On my dining table was Grandma’s lace tablecloth, and plates of homemade cookies.
These days, that old lace tablecloth gets plenty of use, and I expect many more years of enjoying family and friends around it.

Dujiangyan — A Great Ancient Water Project
Hello! I’m Li Bing, an engineer from ancient Qin State. I want to tell you about Dujiangyan, the world’s oldest water system. We built it over 2,200 years ago.
People in Sichuan had a hard time back then. The Min River caused bad floods when it rained, and crops died when there was no rain.
We didn’t build high dams (堤坝) to stop the river. Instead, we worked with nature. First, my workers spent 8 years cutting through Mount Yulei to make Baopingkou (宝瓶口). This let river water flow east to fields. We had no machines, so we used fire and cold water to break rocks. Then we built Yuzui (鱼嘴). It split the river into two parts: one brought water to farms, the other carried away floodwater. Finally, we built Feishayan (飞沙堰) to wash sand and stones out of the system.
Dujiangyan is a clever design. We made the Inner River deeper and Feishayan lower. This helped control water in both flood and dry seasons. For over 1,000 years, workers have cleaned and looked after it every year. This river system made the land around Chengdu rich. Today, it waters over 7,700 square kilometers of farmland and feeds 30 million people in 8 cities. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
To remember my son and me, local people hold a traditional festival every spring. They also built Erwang Temple to honour us.
The secret of its success is simple: respect the river and follow nature.

“What about something to eat?” Artie said and took out an old beef sandwich. Jakey looked at it and thought the hedgehog would get sick after eating it. So he decided to find his own way to help the hedgehog.
Jakey searched around the house and luckily found a nice long board. He pulled the board and placed it against a corner of the well, next to the hedgehog. Artie and Danny were so busy with their plans that they didn’t notice what Jakey did.
The hedgehog didn’t seem to like the board and made an angry sound. “Don’t worry. It won’t hurt you,” Jakey said. After that, he climbed up into his tree house and waited quietly.
A few minutes later, Jakey saw the hedgehog smell the board, touch it with one foot, and walk up the board. It got out of the well finally and disappeared into the trees.

【13题详解】
根据第二段中“Often, the neighbor ladies would stop in to visit, and Grandma was never too busy to sit and talk with them. Grandma always had homemade cookies.”。可知奶奶对待访客非常友好和热情。因此,“hospitality”意为“好客”,即对访客友好。
【14题详解】
根据第三段最后一句“I felt so special being a dinner guest and eating on that pretty tablecloth.”可知,作者觉得特别是因为她在祖母漂亮的桌布上用餐。
【15题详解】
根据第四段中“But when I thought about Grandma, I could almost hear her say, ‘Use it! Enjoy it!’ So, I started bringing it out...”

上文“We widely use electricity for lighting, cooking, working and transportation”,前文在介绍电的广泛用途,此处应描述电对生活的影响,A选项“It makes our daily lives much easier and more convenient”承接上文对电用途的描述,且代词“It”指代electricity。
【18题详解】
上文“Human beings have invented many ways to produce electricity,以及下文“Burning coal and oil is the traditional method, but it produces harmful gas and pollutes the air. To solve this problem, people turn to green energy”,此处需要总述句,点明发电分为传统和绿色两种途径,C选项“We can get electric power from both traditional and green ways”恰好概括了后文即将展开的两种分类,起到过渡作用。
【19题详解】
上文“These two eco-friendly power methods are greatly beneficial to environmental protection”,以及下文“Compared with traditional energy, green energy has a huge advantage for future development”,此处需要承上启下,承接前文的环保优势,引出后文的发展优势,E选项“They have been increasingly popular around the world in recent years”与后文提到绿色能源具有巨大优势逻辑连贯。
【20题详解】
下文“Fossil fuels are non-renewable and will finally run out, while wind and solar energy can be used endlessly”,空后句详细对比了“化石燃料(不可再生)”与“风能太阳能(可无限制使用)”的区别,因此此处需填入本段主题句,D选项“Energy sources can be divided into two different types in general”总起下文,符合语境。
