What makes someone a good doctor, therapist or parent? What guides policy-makers to make wise and moral decisions? Many believe that empathy (同理心) — the ability to experience the feelings of others, and particularly others’ suffering — is essential to all of these roles. I argue that this is a mistake, often a tragic one. Empathy acts like a spotlight, focusing one’s attention on a single individual. This can have positive effects, but it can also lead to short-sighted and unfair moral actions. And it is subject to bias (偏见). Both laboratory studies and actual experiences show that empathy flows most for those who look like us, who are attractive and who are non-threatening and familiar. Empathy has its place, but reason should guide action. For example, when we realize that a crisis such as climate change has great significance, we are going beyond empathy. A good policy maker makes decisions using reason. He or she hopes to achieve the sort of fairness and impartiality (不偏不倚) that empathy doesn’t provide. Empathy isn’t just a reflex (下意识反应), of course. We can choose to empathize and stir empathy for others. But this flexibility can be a curse (祸根). Our empathy can be used by others, as when cunning (狡猾的) politicians use our empathy to stir up hatred (仇恨) against certain groups of people. For those in caring professions — including doctors, nurses, teachers and social workers — compassion and understanding are critically important. However, feeling the suffering of others too strongly can lead to exhaustion, burnout and ineffective work. No good doctor is filled with anxiety when working with an anxious patient. The writer Leslie Jamison has a great description of this. “His calmness didn’t make me feel abandoned; it made me feel secure,” she wrote as she described a good doctor who had helped her. “I wanted to look at him and see the opposite of my fear, not its echo.” Many of life’s deepest pleasures, such as engagement with novels, movies and television, require empathic connection. But when it comes to being a good person, there are better alternatives. 55. What is the author’s main viewpoint on empathy? A. Empathy is the most important quality for all professionals. B. Empathy has weaknesses and reason matters more for proper decisions. C. Empathy always brings fair and far-sighted moral judgments. D. Empathy is equally given to every person we meet. 56. How is the passage mainly organized? (篇章结构题) A. List different opinions → compare pros and cons of empathy → choose the best one B. Introduce the definition of empathy → discuss its history → summarize its use C. Raise questions → list several facts → give solutions to social problems D. Put forward an opinion → explain drawbacks with different examples → draw a conclusion 57. Who is most likely to receive people’s empathy according to Paragraph 3? A. Strangers with totally different appearances. B. Unfriendly and unfamiliar strangers. C. Attractive people similar to ourselves. D. People from unknown distant regions. 58. What will a wise policymaker depend on to handle big crises like climate change? A. Pure and strong personal empathy B. Personal preference for familiar crowds C. Natural emotional reflex of empathy D. Rational thinking rather than only empathy 59. What harm may too much empathy bring to medical workers? A. Full energy and efficient work B. Tiredness and poor work performance C. Peaceful mood and secure service D. Freedom from anxiety and pressure 60. What can we learn from Leslie Jamison’s words about a good doctor? A. He shares all patients’ fears and feels upset. B. He keeps calm and brings safety to patients. C. He copes with patients’ negative feelings completely. D. He falls into anxiety along with sick people. C. 7分 Choose the best answer and complete the passage (选择最恰当的选项完成短文) Many scientists believe our love of sugar may actually be an addiction (瘾). When we eat or drink sugary foods, the sugar enters our blood and affects the parts of our brain that make us feel good. Then the good feeling ____61____ leaving us wanting more. All tasty foods do this, but sugar has a particularly strong effect. In this way, it is in fact an addictive drug—one that doctors recommend we all cut down on. “It seems like every time I ____62____ an illness and trace (追踪) a path to the first cause, I find my way back to sugar,” says scientist Richard Johnson. One-third of adults worldwide have high blood pressure, and up to 346 million have diabetes (糖尿病). Why? “Sugar, we believe, is one of the factors, if not the major factors,” says Johnson. Our bodies are designed to survive on very little sugar. Early humans often had very little food, so our bodies learned to be very efficient (有效率的) in storing sugar as fat. In this way, we had ____63____ stored for when there was no food. But today, most people have more than enough. So the very thing that once saved us may now be killing us. So what is the ____64____? It’s obvious that we need to eat less sugar. The trouble is, in today’s world, it’s extremely difficult to avoid. From breakfast cereals to after-dinner desserts, our foods are increasingly filled with it. Some manufacturers (制造商) even use sugar to replace taste in foods. However, they are advertised as ____65____ in fat. So while the foods seem healthier, large amounts of sugar are often added. But some people are ____66____ sugar and trying to create a healthier environment. Many schools are replacing sugary desserts with healthier options, like fruit. Other schools are trying to encourage exercise by building facilities like walking tracks ____67____ students and others in the community can exercise. The battle has not yet been lost. 61. A. comes back B. goes away C. breaks up D. takes turns 62. A. study B. have C. doubt D. spread 63. A. memories B. energy C. water D. data 64. A. result B. reason C. problem D. solution 65. A. rich B. high C. low D. heavy 66. A. fighting out B. fighting for C. fighting over D. fighting against 67. A. although B. because C. while D. so D.:(7分,72题为3分) Read the passage below and answer the following questions (根据文章内容回答下列问题) Last month, the Grade Eight students in Garden School had a debate on the topic “Is it a good idea for parents to talk about the family finances (家庭财政) with their kids?”. Here are some opinions from Lisa, one of the students who thinks it is a good idea. Most parents believe it is not proper to tell their kids about how much they make and how much they spend, so most families don’t talk about money with their kids. They basically feel it is not their concern. You could easily agree. But is it really none of our business? Doesn’t our parents’ income (收入) affect us? They use the money to pay for food, clothing and shelter. If they lost their jobs and became unemployed, wouldn’t that affect us, too? I’m not going to say parents should show their kids every bill before paying it or that they should ask their kids for advice on big financial decisions, but I will say they should keep kids involved and informed. It is part of teaching them about money and life. Kids follow their parents’ every move and learn from them. Parents have to teach their kids about money because kids don’t learn it in school. As a parent, it’s necessary to teach them about saving, investing and staying away from credit (赊欠). Also, parents have to manage their own money well if they really want to set an example. So I think it’s a good idea for parents to talk about the family finances with their kids. Tell them how much your salary is. It might help them decide which career to choose. Tell them how you spend your own money and talk to them before you make big purchases such as a new car. Include them in the process so that they know how it works and are satisfied with it. You can include them more and more as they get older. Don’t make money a taboo (禁忌) issue in your home. 68. Most families don’t talk about money with their kids, do they? ________________________________________________________________ 69. What was the debate about? ________________________________________________________________ 70. According to Lisa, what do parents use money to do? ________________________________________________________________ 71. What does Lisa mean by saying “Is it really none of our business”? ________________________________________________________________ 72. Do you want your parents to talk about family finances with you? Why or why not? Please give at least two reasons. ________________________________________________________________ Part 4 Writing(第4部分写作)(共10分) 73.(共10分) 73. Many cars got stuck on the road, and some low-lying houses were flooded. At that time, Lily, a Grade 8 student, was at home doing her homework. Suddenly, she heard a loud knock on the door. It was her neighbour, Mr Smith. He told Lily that the water was rising quickly and asked her to go to the community centre with him. The community centre was on high ground and was a safe place for people to stay during the flood. On the way to the community centre, they saw some volunteers helping old people carry their bags. The local government also sent boats to rescue people who couldn’t get out of their homes. By the afternoon, the rain stopped and the water began to go down. No one was hurt in this flood, thanks to the timely help from neighbors, volunteers and the government. Many students like to wear fashionable clothes to show their personalities. Some girls love wearing beautiful dresses or cute sweaters, while boys prefer cool jackets and sports shoes. Fashion changes with time. A few years ago, bright-coloured clothes were very popular. But now, more students choose simple and comfortable clothes. They think fashion is not only about looking good but also about feeling relaxed. Our school doesn’t have strict rules about clothes, but we all know that we should choose fashion that fits students. Wearing clean and proper clothes is the best fashion. It makes us confident and happy in our daily study and life. 【答案】55. B 56. D 57. C 58. D 59. B 60. 61. 68.
