ZeroWaste Living: A New Lifestyle

The zerowaste movement was started by Bea Johnson, a French woman living in California. She and her family produce only one small jar of waste each year. Her book, *Zero Waste Home*, has inspired millions of people around the world.
How can you start a zerowaste lifestyle? Here are some simple tips:
Refuse what you do not need. Say no to plastic straws, singleuse cups, and unnecessary packaging.
Reduce what you do need. Buy only what is necessary and choose products with less packaging.
Reuse what you have. Use reusable bags, bottles, and containers instead of disposable ones.
Recycle what you cannot refuse, reduce, or reuse. Sort your waste and recycle paper, plastic, and glass.
Rot the rest. Compost (堆肥) your food waste instead of throwing it away.
Many people think zerowaste living is difficult and expensive. However, it can actually save you money. By buying less and reusing more, you spend less on unnecessary items. Moreover, you help protect the environment for future generations.

The Secret Life of Bees
Bees are one of the most important insects on Earth. They play a vital role in pollinating (授粉) plants, which helps produce about onethird of the food we eat. Without bees, many fruits, vegetables, and nuts would disappear from our tables.
There are over 20,000 species of bees in the world. The most wellknown is the honeybee, which lives in large colonies (群体) of up to 60,000 individuals. Each colony has a queen bee, whose main job is to lay eggs. The worker bees, all female, do all the other jobs: collecting nectar and pollen (花粉), building the honeycomb, and protecting the hive. Male bees, called drones, have only one job — to mate with the queen.
The way bees communicate is fascinating. When a worker bee finds a good source of food, it returns to the hive and performs a "waggle dance" (摇摆舞). The dance tells other bees the direction and distance of the food source. This amazing form of communication was discovered by scientist Karl von Frisch, who won a Nobel Prize for his research.
Unfortunately, bee populations have been declining (减少) rapidly in recent years. This is mainly caused by the use of pesticides (杀虫剂), loss of natural habitats, and climate change. Scientists warn that if we do not take action, we could lose bees forever.
What can we do to help? Planting beefriendly flowers in your garden, avoiding the use of harmful pesticides, and supporting local beekeepers are all good ways to start. Every small action counts in protecting these tiny but essential creatures.
36. What percentage of the food we eat depends on bee pollination?
A. About onetenth. B. About onethird. C. About onehalf. D. About twothirds.
37. What is the main job of worker bees?
A. To lay eggs. B. To mate with the queen.
C. To collect food and protect the hive. D. To perform the waggle dance only.
38. What does a bee's "waggle dance" communicate?
A. The weather condition. B. The location of food.
C. The danger from predators. D. The health of the queen.
39. Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a cause of bee population decline?
A. Use of pesticides. B. Loss of natural habitats.
C. Climate change. D. Overpopulation of bees.
40. What is the writer's attitude toward bee protection?
A. Indifferent. B. Worried and encouraging action. C. Hopeless. D. Doubtful.

The Power of Reading
Reading is one of the most valuable habits a person can develop. It not only entertains but also educates and inspires. Whether you enjoy fiction, nonfiction, or poetry, reading opens doors to new worlds and ideas.
First, reading improves your vocabulary and language skills. When you read, you encounter new words and phrases. Over time, you learn how to use them correctly in your own writing and speaking. Studies show that people who read regularly have better communication skills than those who do not.
Second, reading reduces stress. When you immerse yourself in a good book, you forget about your worries for a while. It is like taking a mental vacation. Researchers have found that reading for just six minutes can lower stress levels by up to 68%.
Third, reading enhances empathy (同理心). When you read stories about different people and cultures, you understand their feelings and experiences better. This helps you become more understanding and compassionate (有同情心的) in real life.
Fourth, reading improves focus and concentration. In today's world of constant distractions, the ability to focus on one thing for a long time is becoming rare. Reading trains your brain to concentrate, which benefits you in all areas of life.
Finally, reading expands your knowledge. Every book you read teaches you something new. You learn about history, science, art, and countless other subjects. The more you read, the more you know, and the more interesting conversations you can have.

The Most Influential Thing in My Junior High School Life
The most influential thing in my junior high school life was joining the school volunteer team in Grade 8. Before that, I was a shy and selfcentered girl who only cared about grades. One day, our teacher took us to a local old people’s home. At first, I felt nervous and didn’t know what to say. But when an old lady held my hand and thanked me with tears in her eyes, something inside me changed.
That experience taught me that happiness comes from giving, not just receiving. I began to visit the home regularly and helped with cleaning, chatting, and performing small shows. Slowly, I became more outgoing and patient. I also realized that many elderly people are lonely and need our care.
This experience shaped who I am today. It made me more responsible and empathetic. I learned that even small acts of kindness can bring warmth to others and make our world better. I will continue volunteering in the future, not because it looks good on a resume, but because it truly fills my heart with joy.
