The World of Chinese Art
Chinese art has a history of thousands of years. From beautiful landscape paintings to
amazing sculptures, Chinese artists have created many wonderful works. One of the most famous
types of Chinese painting is the ink wash painting (水墨画). Unlike Western oil paintings, which
use bright colours and try to look realistic, ink wash paintings use only black ink and water.
The artists control the amount of water to create different shades of grey and black. This simple
style can express deep feelings and ideas.
Another important art form is Chinese porcelain (瓷器). The city of Jingdezhen has been the
"capital of porcelain" for over 1,700 years. The porcelain made there is famous all over the world
for its thin walls and beautiful blue-and-white patterns. Making porcelain is not easy — it requires
great skill and patience. The clay must be shaped by hand, painted with special colours, and then
baked in a kiln (窑) at a very high temperature.
Today, many young Chinese artists are combining traditional techniques with modern ideas.
They use computers and new materials to create art that is both Chinese and international. These
artists believe that tradition and innovation can exist together. As one young artist said, "We
should not only protect the old — we must also let it grow."
