Patrick Moore did more than anyone in history to get people interested in the stars.
On a popular TV programme The Sky at Night,he brought the wonders of the night sky
to millions of viewers.
Born in 1923,Moore grew up in Sussex. He had limited formal schooling due to the
heart problems he suffered up to the age of 16.Although this prevented him from going to
the University of Cambridge,it did leave him plenty of time for other pursuits. His love
for astronomy began at six, when he decided to learn a new constellation (each
night and bought binoculars to explore the heavens. At 11,he became the youngest
member of the British Astronomical Association-and later served as its president 50
years later.A major breakthrough came when astronomer WS Franks, who ran the
Brockhurst Observatory, asked 14-year-old Moore to take over after his death.
Despite his heart problem,Moore joined the Royal Air Force during World War II.
His knowledge of the stars proved invaluable for navigation ()After the war,he
taught and wrote Guide to the Moon in 1952-a book so successful that it was reprinted
before publication. In 1971,NASA even asked him to observe dust storms on Mars to
help plan the Mariner 9 mission.
Moore was tireless in promoting astronomy to the public-anyone who showed an
interest was given the warmest encouragement. Many professional astronomers owe their
careers to the encouragement they received from him. When he died in 2012,Britain lost a
national treasure. For decades,he was the public voice of astronomy, inspiring
generations to look up at the stars.

Clean air is important for our health, but many homes have hidden pollutants.
Things like paints, cleaning products, waxes, and carpets can release harmful chemicals
such as formaldehyde and benzene. These chemicals may cause skin problems, eye
damage,or even cancer.Children are especially at risk because they spend a lot of time
indoors and have sensitive lungs.
Many people buy houseplants because they look nice and are said to clean the air.But
do they really work?Scientists have known that plants turn carbon dioxide into oxygen.
In the 1980s,NASA did an experiment. They put plants like spider plants in small,
sealed()boxes with polluted air. After many hours, they found that these plants
could remove harmful chemicals from the air.Later studies showed that some plants trap
pollutants on their hairy or waxy leaves.Others take them in through tiny holes called
stomata and then break the chemicals down using special enzymes().Some plants even
send the pollutants to their roots, where tiny microbes eat them.
However, using plants to clean the air at home is not easy. Most popular
houseplants, such as fiddle-leaf figs and birds of paradise, come from tropical places.
They have very small stomata,so they take in fewer pollutants. In fact, plants only clean
the air well in small, sealed boxes. In normal rooms with open space, they do not make a
big difference. Some "living walls"-large walls covered with many plants-can help a
little. But they are hard to take care of,and one study found that 60 square centimeters of
plants reduced carbon dioxide by less than 2%.
So,enjoy your plants for their beauty and the joy they bring. But if you really want
cleaner air at home,it is better to use an electric air purifier instead.
28.What is paragraph 1 mainly about?
A.The benefits of houseplants.
B.The harm of house pollutants.
C.The importance of clean air.
D.The types of indoor pollutants.
29.What did NASA's experiment prove in the 1980s?
A.Enzymes break down pollutants.
B.Plants take in pollutants by roots.
C.Plants can purify the polluted air.
D.Tree leaves trap harmful chemicals.
30.How is the effect of the living walls in cleaning air?
A.Satisfying.
B.Reliable.
C.Excellent.
D.Limited.
31.What does the author's suggestion in cleaning indoor air?
A.Planting houseplants
B.Using air purifiers.
C.Opening windows often.
D.Using green furniture.

On TikTok and Instagram, more and more readers are showing off their colorful
notes inside books. These notes, called marginalia, can be very creative. Some people fill
whole pages with notes that match the book's cover. This new trend has started a debate:
Is writing in books a bad habit or a helpful practice?
Marginalia are not new.Famous people like Leonardo da Vinci and Edgar Allan Poe
wrote in their books.Just last year, writer Ann Patchett made a special version of her
book Tom Lake with her own notes. It helped raise money for small bookstores.Writer
Caitlin Welsh says she always wanted to be the kind of person who writes in books.
Pretending to be that person helped her become one.
Maryanne Wolf,a professor at UCLA,says that deep reading helps us find our own
ideas.Neuroscientists say writing by hand helps you remember and understand more.
Taking notes can help readers understand the text better and form their own opinions.
Young readers love annotating().There is no wrong way to do it.If someone
wants to highlight every line from their favorite character, that's fine.Romance readers
often mark their favorite scenes.Finding someone else's notes in a used book can feel
special. So if young readers want to use colorful pens and sticky notes, that's great.
Writing in books doesn't hurt anyone.Let them enjoy their books their own way.
32.What is the main purpose of paragraph 1?
A.To give a definition.
B.To introduce the topic.
C.To show a new trend.
D.To present an example.
33.What do we know about the famous people mentioned in paragraph 2?
A.They loved taking notes in books.
B.They created the word marginalia.
C.They made money by taking notes.
D.They wrote great books from notes.
34.What do neuroscientists think of note-taking?
A.It is always creative.
B.It's helpful to writers.
C.It helps deep reading.
D.It sparks inspiration.
35.What is the author's attitude towards annotating books?
A.Doubtful.
B.Unclear.
C.Dismissive.
D.Supportive.

Back in China,Emily Chang's job was to promote Starbucks. She helped Chinese
people love coffee, even though China has a long history of drinking tea.36.Her
new job is the opposite:introducing Chinese tea to America,a country that loves coffee.
Last year,Chagee became one of the many firms trying to gain a foothold in
America. These shops sell bubble tea, fruit tea,and fresh Chinese tea, sometimes capped
with milky foam. They are competing with older tea shops from Taiwan, which first
made"boba"popular in America.Interestingly, the coffee market in America is 28 times
larger than the fresh tea market.37.
However, the Chinese firms'presence is still small.HeyTea has led the way,
opening more than 40 American shops since 2023.38.Mixue,a giant bubble-tea and
ice-cream seller,is the world's largest food-and-beverage chain.But just five of its 60,000
outlets are in America.
39 Partly because there are already many tea shops in China,so companies want
to find new customers abroad. Some Americans think bubble tea is healthier than dessert,
especially low-sugar options."Coffee gives me a caffeine crash,but tea doesn't,"said one
customer in New York.
At a busy Mixue shop in New York,Spring Oolong Milk Tea sells for $3.99.A
Chinese-American customer,Eric Li,said he is happy to see many non-Chinese enjoying
his culture."There is some international tension right now.40 "he said.
A.Why so few?
B.What should they do?
C.This means there is a lot of room for tea to grow.
D.Now she works for Chagee,a Chinese tea brand.
E.Yet she still wants to promote coffee culture in China.
F.Isn't it good that everyone can get together over a drink?
G.Just nine of Chagee's 7,500-odd global outlets are in the States.

300 rooms,it would take a lifetime to see everything.Below 57 (be)three of its most

First, the Winged Victory of Samothrace. This huge stone sculpture appears to have
