How do you usually sleep—barefoot or with socks on? Scientists have found that wearing socks to bed can help you fall asleep more quickly. Isn’t that amazing?
The temperature of your internal organs (内脏器官) is called your core (核心) body temperature. During the day, your core body temperature stays around 37 degrees. Over the course of seven or eight hours of sleep, it drops by as much as 1.2 degrees. How does this happen? Well, when your brain decides that your internal organs should cool down, it will widen (扩张) your blood vessels (血管). The warmer blood from your body’s core will then go to the other parts of your body. In this way, your core body temperature gradually drops.
This is important for falling asleep. In fact, the faster your body’s core cools down, the faster you will get to sleep. According to scientists, wearing socks can help widen your blood vessels. And this lowers your core body temperature and helps you fall asleep more quickly.
If you have trouble getting to sleep, why not give it a try? Take a warm foot bath before bed and put on your socks. You’ll probably fall asleep fifteen minutes faster than usual!

“Jim, I am not dead,” I told him.
He touched my arm. “You aren’t dead,” he said, happy to look at me.
I was just as happy to see him. I looked down at his campfire. “Let’s make some breakfast.” After we ate, we lay back for a bit.
Jim asked, “Huck, if you’re here now, then who was killed at that hut (小屋)?” I told him the whole story.
“You’re pretty smart,” he said. “Even Tom Sawyer can’t come up with a better plan than that.” “And what about you, Jim? Why are you here on the island?” He looked uneasy. “Maybe I’d better not tell.” “Why not?” I asked.
“You won’t tell on (告发) me, will you?” he asked. “I promise I won’t.”
Jim moved closer to me. “I ran away.”
“Jim!”
“Huck, you said you wouldn’t tell.”
“Yeah, I promised,” I said, “and I’ll keep it.”
“The thing is,” he told me, “Miss Watson always said she’d never sell me, but the other night I heard her tell the widow (寡妇) that she would sell me for $800.”
“That’s a lot of money,” I said.
The widow told Miss Watson she couldn’t do it, but I didn’t wait to hear what Miss Watson said. I climbed down the hill, stole (偷) a boat, and here I am.”
“Well, I’m glad you’re here,” I told him.
We stayed by the campfire for a while. Jim looked at the sky. The birds gathered together, and then they flew away.
“The storm’s coming,” Jim said. “It’s going to be worse.” I looked at our blankets, the only protection we had.
“Come on, Huck. I’ll show you something.” Jim led me to a small cave (洞穴). We ate our dinner there. Pretty soon the storm came. It rained heavily, and the wind blew so hard that it would bend (折弯) those trees.

Mr. and Mrs. Spencer both had very busy jobs and didn’t have much time to spend with their young children. They wanted to change this, and because their hobby was boating, they decided to sail round the world together.
It took them six years to prepare everything for the trip. First, they bought a new boat. Then, both the husband and the wife had to take advanced (高级的) sailing lessons and learn all about the sea and the weather. Mr. Spencer also did several courses in repairing engines (发动机) and Mrs. Spencer spent some time in a restaurant learning to cut up fish.
In October they had one year off from their jobs and sailed away from Britain with their two children. The next year, in August, their long journey ended in Australia.
The boat was not big, but they took a teacher for the children with them. None of them found the trip boring because there were three computers, many CDs, a TV and a DVD player on the boat.
