When Mike Mushaw decided to join the national bone marrow (骨髓) registry nearly three years ago, he never ready gave it a second thought. After all, he did it only because his college, football coach had encouraged him and his teammates to register. But about six months after the sign-up, he did get a call. The now 21-year-old linebacker’s bone marrow matched a patient in Virginia. Mushaw had to decide whether to go all in. It would mean spending a night in the hospital and undergoing general anesthesia, which carries some risk. And he’d likely never know whether his donation worked. “Once they took 17 vials (试管) of blood, I was like, ‘All right this is real. This is going to happen.’”
His donation went to a five-month-old girl named Eleanor who was sick with a rare immune-deficiency disease that was diagnosed when she was only three month old. Eleanor had rarely left her house other than to travel to the hospital or the doctor. “Eleanor was going to die without a bone marrow transplant,” her mother, Jessica, told NBC.
Still, there was no guarantee of success. Eleanor’s family had hoped that she would have some improvement from the transplant, enough to live a more normal, life. Instead, after a few weeks, the doctors at Children’s National Hospital in Washington, D.C., came back with shocking news: Eleanor’s condition hadn’t just improved—Mushaw’s bone marrow had cured her.
Mushaw didn’t know any of this until months after his donation. In most cases, the donor and recipient remain anonymous to each other. But about six months after the procedure, Eleanor’s parents sent him an e-mail to thank him for saving her life.
“When they told me it was a little girl, I got a little choked up,” Mushaw says. But their surprising connection was only beginning. Mushaw asked whether he and Eleanor could FaceTime regularly so he could check on her progress. “It was amazing to watch her and be a part of her life,” he says. Eleanor kept tabs on him, too, by watching his football games on TV. Mushaw often invited her family to drive from Virginia to Connecticut to meet at his games where tiny shouts of “Mike! Mike!” could be heard from the stands as the little girl cheered on her very own hero.
“I had waited by that point well over a year to finally give a hug to this guy who saved my daughter’s life,” Jessica says. “We felt like we were on cloud nine all weekend getting to spend time with him and have him be with Eleanor.” In January, Mushaw reunited with Eleanor, this time in Virginia, to celebrate her birthday. It will likely be the first of many celebrations together. “As a parent, it feels really great to watch someone love your kid as much as you do,” Jessica says. We were two complete strangers, and now we’ve become such a big part of each other’s lives.”
24. What can we learn from the first paragraph?
A. Mushaw decided to join the national bone marrow registry on his own.
B. Mushaw was unwilling to donate his bone marrow.
C. Mushaw at first wondered whether his donation would work.
D. Mushaw signed up the bone marrow registry at 21.
25. What does the underlined phrase “kept tabs on” in paragraph 5 mean?
A. pay a price to B. pay close attention to
C. keep a record of D. keep pace with
26. What can we know about Eleanor from the article?
A. Eleanor was often taken out to travel before deceiving the donation.
B. Eleanor’s family was certain that she could be cured with the donation.
C. Eleanor was excited when watching Mike’s football game.
D. Eleanor first saw Mushaw when Mushaw went to Virginia to celebrate her birthday.
27. Which is the best title for the article?
A. A Little Life Saved, A Big Friend Made
B. A Medical Miracle
C. A Lucky Transplant
D. Donation Working, Girl Saved

Space is where our future is—trips to the Moon, Mars and beyond. Most people would think that aside from comets (彗星) and stars, there was little else out there. But, since our space journey started we have left so much trash there that scientists are now concerned that if we don’t clean it up, we may all be in mortal (致命的) danger.
The first piece of space junk was created in 1964, when the American satellite Vanguard 1 stopped operating and lost its connection with the ground center. However, since it kept orbiting around the Earth without any consequences, scientists became increasingly comfortable abandoning things that no longer served any useful purpose in space.
It is estimated that there are now over millions of pieces of man-made trash orbiting the Earth at high speed. The junk varies from tiny pieces of paint chipped off rockets to cameras, huge fuel tanks, and even odd items like the million-dollar tool kit that astronaut Heidemarie Stefanyshyn-Piper lost during a spacewalk.
The major problem with the space trash is that it may hit working satellites and damage traveling spacecraft. Moreover, pieces of junk may collide (碰撞) with each other and break into pieces which fall back to the Earth. To avoid this, scientists have invented several ways of clearing the sky. Ground stations have been built to monitor larger pieces of space trash to prevent them from crashing into working satellites or space shuttles. Future plans include a cooperative effort among many nations to stop littering in space and to clean up the trash already there.
28. What was the first piece of man-made space trash?
A. A camera. B. A tool kit.
C. A broken satellite. D. A fuel tank.
29. Why were scientists NOT concerned about space trash in the beginning?
A. It did not cause any problems.
B. It no longer served any useful purpose.
C. It was millions of miles away from the Earth.
D. It was regarded as similar to comets and stars.
30. What can be learned about space junk?
A. It is huge, heavy machines.
B. It may cause problems for space shuttles.
C. It floats slowly around the Earth.
D. It never changes positions.
31. What has been done to the space trash problem?
A. Ground stations are built to help store the trash properly in space.
B. Many nations have worked together to stop polluting space.
C. Larger pieces of space trash are being closely watched.
D. Scientists have cleaned up most of the trash.
D
When thinking about placing a human being in space, one of the most important questions was how to design special clothing needed to protect a person from the dangers of the space environment. The cold of space will freeze skin in a short time. The fierce heat of the sun can cause serious burns. The lack of atmosphere can cause gases in the body to expand (扩大) and even burst. With no oxygen to breathe, a human being will die in only a few moments. Radiation from the sun is another risk in space. So is damage from small pieces of rock and objects like meteoroids (陨石).
In 1933, an American flyer, Wiley Post, designed one of the first successful devices to protect a pilot at extreme heights. It was a large device that looked like a can surrounded the pilot’s head. Astronauts in the American space agency (NASA) flew the first American space flights in the early 1960s. The clothing was similar to that invented by Wiley Post.
Today, astronauts wear very different protective clothing. It lets them move, do useful tasks, and stay outside their spacecraft in comfort and safety for several hours. The spacesuit is called the shuttle extravehicular mobility unit or EMU. It was designed to endure longer and to permit more movement than earlier spacesuits.
The EMU has a number of parts that an astronaut can link together by using only one hand, which makes it possible for each astronaut to select the parts that fit correctly.
Nowadays, NASA scientists are also considering the kind of spacesuits that would be needed for exploration on the planet Mars. Because of the gravity on Mars, spacesuits may have to be designed to be lighter than suits used in orbit or on the moon. The equipment may also have to protect astronauts from dust carried in the winds on Mars. And, they must be easy to repair and keep clean during a longer flight to and from the red planet.
32. Which of the following is NOT mentioned about the dangers of space environment?
A. Lack of oxygen. B. Fierce heat from the sun.
C. Gases in the body. D. Radiation from the sun.
33. Which of the following statements is true, according to this passage?
A. Wiley Post designed the first protective clothing for astronauts.
B. Astronauts in earlier spacesuits had difficulty in moving, doing useful tasks and so on.
C. EMU has many parts that can be linked together by using two hands.
D. Special spacesuits have been used for exploration of the planet Mars.
34. The underlined word “endure” means _______.
A. provide B. move C. last D. live
35. The best title of the passage might be ______.
A. Space exploration
B. Astronauts’ flights
C. The Advantages of Spacesuits
D. The Development of Spacesuits

Bloom at Your Own Pace
Exam papers were handed out one after another and landed quietly on every desk. Staring at the red scores on my paper, I knew I failed to get the top rank. Low whispers spread around me as the teacher read out everyone’s rankings slowly. Disappointment welled up inside me, and I felt my dream of entering my ideal university gradually run away.
I had long been pushing myself hard just to achieve high rankings. I rose early in the morning and stayed up late studying every day, arranging all my time tightly for different school subjects. I once firmly believed that taking first place constantly would prepare me for a better future. This belief once motivated me greatly, yet endless pressure soon tired me out. I often felt eye discomfort and mental tiredness, and the top position always seemed impossible to reach.
Feeling low, I left the classroom alone. The air was fresh with the smell of rain. I stopped at a quiet little garden beside the library, which I had never taken time to visit before.
An elderly gardener was busy tending flowers and watering plants with great care. Only a handful of flowers were in bloom (开花) among green leaves. I couldn’t help questioning whether all his efforts were worthwhile.
Sensing my confusion, the old man smiled and began to chat with me. He told me that every flower has its own flowering time. Some blossom early, while others need more time to grow. As long as they get enough sunshine, water and proper care, they will surely bloom perfectly when the right time comes. Instead of rushing for results, we should learn to wait patiently and focus on steady (稳步的) growth.
注意:(1) 词数应为150个左右;(2) 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
“Not sure when they flower — isn’t it upsetting?” I asked.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
From that day on, I decided to follow his advice — less hurrying, more growing.

【原文】M: I’ve been thinking a lot about our living situation lately, especially with the kids needing more personal space.
W: I’ve noticed that, too. And working from home has made it even harder to find a quiet corner.
M: I looked at some listings online last night. There are a few bigger houses still within our budget.
W: That sounds promising — but I worry about the longer travel time if we move farther from the city center.
M: Most of the places I saw are close to public transport.
W: What about our kids’ new schools?
M: I looked into that as well. The nearby schools actually have newer facilities and smaller class sizes.
W: That’s amazing! But moving means a lot of extra work and unexpected costs.
M: True, but staying here may limit the kids’ growth.
W: Maybe we should visit a few places in person first.
M: I agree.

This change is meant to save time, especially during busy hours. In addition, the center has added several indoor spaces for different needs. If you prefer calm exercise, there is a stretching room on the second floor. For group activities, the large hall near the entrance is available throughout the day. Free internet access is provided in all rest areas. Finally, we now offer weekly guided fitness sessions led by trained coaches. These sessions focus on basic rank, balance and flexibility, and are suitable for beginners as well as old members. If you have any questions, feel free to ask our staff.

【答案】28. C 29. A 30. B 31. C

【答案】32. C 33. B 34. C 35. D

根据首段中“The cold of space will freeze skin in a short time. The fierce heat of the sun can cause serious burns. The lack of atmosphere can cause gases in the body to expand (扩大) and even burst. With no oxygen to breathe, a human being will die in only a few moments. Radiation from the sun is another risk in space. (太空的寒冷会在短时间内冻住皮肤。太阳的强烈热量会造成严重灼伤。没有大气会导致体内气体膨胀甚至爆裂。没有可供呼吸的氧气,人类几分钟内就会死亡。来自太阳的辐射是太空的另一个风险。)”可知,文中提到的危险包括寒冷、缺氧、太阳的高温、太阳辐射,体内气体本身不是危险,是无大气导致体内气体膨胀才属于危险。故选C。
【33题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中“It was a large device that looked like a can surrounded the pilot’s head. Astronauts in the American space agency (NASA) flew the first American space flights in the early 1960s. The clothing was similar to that invented by Wiley Post.(这是一个巨大的装置,看起来像一个罐头包围着飞行员的头部。20世纪60年代初,美国航天局(NASA)的宇航员进行了美国第一次太空飞行。这种衣服和威利·波斯特发明的衣服很相似。)”可知,首次太空之旅所用的防护服与Wiley Post发明的装置相似,说明不是Wiley Post发明了第一代防护服,排除A;根据第四段“The EMU has a number of parts that an astronaut can link together by using only one hand(EMU有很多部件,宇航员只用一只手就能把它们连接起来)”可知,宇航员用一只手就可以很方便地操作EMU,排除C;根据第五段“Nowadays, NASA scientists are also considering the kind of spacesuits that would be needed for exploration on the planet Mars(如今,美国宇航局的科学家们也在考虑探索火星所需的宇航服)”可知,特制的太空服尚未用于火星探索,排除D;根据第三段“Today, astronauts wear very different protective clothing. It lets them move, do useful tasks, and stay outside their spacecraft in comfort and safety for several hours.(今天,宇航员穿着非常不同的防护服。它可以让他们移动,做一些有用的任务,并在他们的航天器外舒适安全地呆上几个小时。)”可知,以前的太空服不能让宇航员行动自如,也不便于执行任务,而现在的太空服能够做到这些,故选B。
【34题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词所在句“It was designed to endure longer and to permit more movement than earlier spacesuits.(它被设计成比早期的宇航服endure更长时间和允许更多的运动。)”以及上文“Today, astronauts wear very different protective clothing. It lets them move, do useful tasks, and stay outside their spacecraft in comfort and safety for several hours.(今天,宇航员穿着非常不同的防护服。

From that day on, I decided to follow his advice — less hurrying, more growing.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】参考范文:
“Not sure when they flower — isn’t it upsetting?” I asked. “It makes every effort meaningful,” he replied calmly. “Flowers develop bit by bit every single day. Blooming is just a brief moment, while the whole process of growing matters far more.” His words sank deep into my heart. I recalled my blue mood over poor grades and those sleepless nights, realizing I was too eager to succeed and cared too much about final results so that I ignored steady progress and the value of effort itself. I thanked the gardener sincerely and left the garden with a peaceful and relaxed mind.
From that day on, I decided to follow his advice — less hurrying, more growing. I adjusted my study state and made solid progress step by step instead of blindly chasing high rankings. When graduation finally arrived, I visited the garden again and saw countless flowers in full bloom. Soon afterwards, I received the admission notice from my target university. I realized I needn’t rush for success. As long as I keep moving forward steadily, I will surely shine in my own proper time.
