①Emojis (表情符号) are a fun way to express ourselves while sending messages. But did you know that the same emoji can mean very different things in different cultures? This can cause trouble if you’re not careful enough. Let’s take a closer look at some emojis and their surprising cultural meanings.
②Let’s start with the thumbs-up (竖大拇指) emoji. In many Western countries, people use it widely to show agreement or to praise a job well done. However, in some parts of the Middle East, West Africa and South America, people see it as rude, similar to giving someone the middle finger (手指).
③The OK hand sign also has many kinds of cultural meanings. In the US and Europe, it simply means “everything is fine” or “perfect”. However, people in Brazil and Türkiye think it is an impolite gesture (手势). Even more interestingly, in France, it stands for “zero” or “nothing”. Clearly, this emoji’s meaning truly changes a lot across different cultures!
④The putting hands together emoji also carries different meanings. In Western cultures, many people take it as a high-five — a gesture of celebration. But in most Asian cultures, it is a way to express thanks or greet others.
⑤The crossed fingers emoji can also get you into trouble. In the UK, the US and Canada, crossing fingers is a common way to wish someone good luck. However, in Vietnam, you’d better think twice before using the emoji, as it has a negative meaning there.

When a storm is coming, people can stay safe with the right knowledge and preparation. Here is the true story about how a family survived a tornado.
It was a sunny afternoon in Oklahoma, USA. Tom, his wife Lisa, and their two children were at home. Tom was watching TV when the news warned that a tornado would hit their town in minutes.
Tom immediately told his family to get ready. They carried their emergency kit (应急包), which had water, food, a flashlight, and a first-aid kit. They ran to the basement to hide, which was the safest place in their house. Just as they closed the door, they heard a loud noise. The tornado hit their home.
The wind was so strong that it rocked the house. Lisa held the scared children. Tom kept checking the door, making sure it stayed closed. It felt like forever, but the family kept calm to keep themselves safe. After about five minutes, the noise stopped.
When they came out of the basement, they saw the damage. Part of their roof was gone, and their living room was destroyed. But the family was safe. They were lucky. Many other homes in the area were completely destroyed, and some people were hurt.

The Eye of the Sahara is one of Earth’s most amazing natural wonders. It’s a special place in the desert of Mauritania (毛里塔尼亚), Africa. Looking from the sky, it looks like a huge, bright eye! It is as long as 500 football fields. The Eye looks like a big round pizza with different colourful parts.
How was it made? Millions of years ago, the ground under the sand started to rise up. Then, wind and rain slowly washed away the soft rocks, leaving the hard ones behind. Over time, these hard rocks formed the beautiful circles we see today. From above, you can count about 10 round circles, each one has a different colour. The biggest circle is on the outside, with smaller ones inside.
But the Eye of the Sahara is in trouble because sandstorms often blow over it. Now the sandstorms can make the rocks difficult to see. Also, not many people know about this amazing place because it’s far from big cities.
What can we do to help? Scientists are studying the Eye to try to find ways to protect the rocks from sand. Some people also work hard to find some good ways like building a small road or a simple visitor centre nearby. This way, more kids and tourists can come and see the Eye of the Sahara.
