On August 17, 1969, Hurricane Camille swept through Mississippi. John Koshak decided to stay at home with his family.
Although he thought the house was safe, John and his family still made careful preparations before the storm.
Soon the wind roared loudly. Then, the rain beat heavily against the windows, and the whole house shook badly. Next, water rushed inside rapidly, and the electricity went out at once. The sea had reached the house and the water was rising by the minute. The hurricane was more terrible than they had expected!
“Everybody get out the back door to the car! Pass the children along between us. Count them!” John shouted loudly.
All of them rushed out at once, but the water was too deep and the car would not start. They could not get away, so they had to go back inside quickly.
They tried their best to protect each other, especially the children, from the rising water. In the end, they had to stay on the stairs, holding onto each other.
The storm grew more and more terrible. The roof was blown away with a loud noise, and the walls began to break. The family hugged together in fear, but they stayed brave.

By dawn, the hurricane had finally passed. Their house was destroyed, but everyone survived. Later, they stayed in a friend’s apartment for shelter.
