Roman Numerals: A Timeless System on Clock Faces
Have you seen a clock face with letters instead of numbers? What do those letters mean? In fact, they are not random symbols at all — they are numbers, too. We call them Roman numerals, an ancient number system that has been used for thousands of years and still appears on clocks, books, and monuments today. Here are the basic set of Roman numerals and what they represent: I=1; V=5; X=10; L=50; C=100; D=500; M=1000. These seven simple letters form the building blocks of every number in this system.
To read and write Roman numerals correctly, there are three key rules you need to know:
Repetition: A letter repeats its value as many times as it’s used, but we can repeat it not more than three times. For example, XXX=30, which means 10+10+10=30. You will never see four identical letters in a row, as there is a subtraction rule for numbers like 40 (XL) instead of XXXX.
Addition: If one or more letters come after a letter of greater value, we should add their values together. For example, VII=7, which is 5+1+1=7. This rule works for numbers like XII (12=10+1+1) and CXX (120=100+10+10) as well.
Subtraction: If a letter comes in front of a letter of greater value, we should subtract (减去) the smaller number from the larger one. For example, XL=40, which means 50-10=40. Other common examples include IV=4 (5-1) and IX=9 (10-1).
Though Roman numerals are no longer used for everyday math, they remain a classic way to mark time on clocks, number chapters in books, and label (标记) important events. Their simple rules and timeless style make them a small but fascinating part of our modern world.
1. How many times can a Roman numeral symbol be used continuously at most?
A. Two times. B. Three times. C. Four times. D. Five times.
2. According to the rules, what does XXIV stand for?
A. 22. B. 24. C. 26. D. 28.
3. Why are Roman numerals still valued today?
A. They are simple and classic markers. B. They are easier to write than numbers.
C. They are needed for daily use in math. D. They remind people of Roman culture.

A group of China’s most popular influencers are exploring half-forgotten traditional Chinese culture — from performances to wedding ceremonies. On Chinese short video platforms, users can’t get enough of it.
Shi Haifeng, who goes by the screen name “Nanxiang doesn’t like to eat”, is one of them. Starting out as a food vlogger, Shi turned to recreating ancient recipes (食谱) , and eventually became a full-time cultural heritage creator. He aims to present traditional Chinese cultural heritage as real life experiences with inspiring personal stories. In one of his most popular videos, he learned to make lacquer plate (漆盘) in Hubei Province. Together with a local craftsman, he spent days gathering raw lacquer in the mountains and made a black lacquer plate decorated with nine golden dragons. The video gained tens of millions of views on major platforms such as Douyin.
In a country with more than 40 UNESCO-listed intangible cultural heritage traditions, Shi brings a breath of fresh air to the field: in his early 30s, his appearance breaks the old belief that only senior, serious artists are the only group to master cultural knowledge, exciting viewers with his youth and energy.
Official supports have upheld Shi as a role model. But the creator himself has also expressed this sense of responsibility. In his burning charcoal dance video, he also stressed the importance of collective effort: “With more people, we can now perform movements that were previously impossible.”
The rapid rise of cultural heritage short videos shows how heritage is being reimagined. Viewers are not just watching craftsmanship, but the staging of cultural pride. What viewers enjoy is the feeling of being connected to tradition — through story, and national pride.
4. How does Shi spread cultural heritage online?
A. Through formal expert talks. B. With live personal experiences.
C. Via wild and exciting shows. D. By displaying historical objects.
5. What’s Shi’s contribution to passing down cultural heritage ?
A. Strengthening old beliefs. B. Producing new recipes.
C. Recording ancient craft skills. D. Reshaping people’s view.
6. What does Shi stress in heritage protection?
A. Devotion and teamwork. B. Responsibility and hard work.
C. Talent and creativity. D. Technology and tools.
7. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The popularity of Short Videos. B. Joint efforts in Heritage Protection.
C. The Way to Make Lacquer Plates. D. A Fresh Voice for Traditional Culture.

Few people enjoy the darkness that comes with winter in the world’s higher latitudes (纬度). In up to a tenth of the population, the long nights can cause depression (抑郁症) known as seasonal affective disorder (SAD). The exact causes are unclear, but possible factors include lower melatonin (褪黑素), a drop in serotonin (血清素), and changes to the body’s inner clock.
Antidepressants may help but often have side-effects. Many people prefer to treat the root cause with bright light tools like desk lamps. Many doctors recommend them as a first-line treatment for the disorder.
Testing how well they work is tricky. In a drug trial, for instance, it is relatively straightforward to give some patients real pills, but light treatment tests would mean keeping people away from daylight for long periods. Even if you can find the volunteers, doing so is only really possible in big institutions such as hospitals or care homes. A few studies have been done along these lines, however, most have to make do with less strict controls.
Despite those limitations, the findings look good. Last year a review of 21 studies, led by Tu Zhe-Ming at the Jingzhou Mental Health Centre in China, concluded that light treatment does indeed seem to work. Another review was published in March by Mihaela Bucuta, a psychologist at the Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu, in Romania. It concluded that between 60% and 90% of patients see “symptom remission” with daily use.
The benefits appear great enough that a good deal of research has been done into whether light treatment can help patients with other, non-SAD forms of depression. Here, again, the findings seem promising. Dr Bucuta’s review concluded that light treatment alone can help with depression in 44% of cases. When applied with antidepressants, that number rises to 76%. Doing both together seems better than taking drugs alone.
All that makes for a cheerful thought as autumn nights draw in. For those who suffer from winter depression, the light at the end of the tunnel may shine out of a lamp.
8. What is SAD according to the text?
A. A drop in some body chemicals. B. A disorder of the body’s inner clock.
C. A kind of drug used to treat depression. D. A mood disorder caused by long winter nights.
9. Why is it hard to carry out light treatment tests?
A. It is short of strict standards. B. It’s hard to avoid daylight for long.
C. It lacks qualified volunteers. D. It needs professional lab equipment.
10. What does the underlined words “symptom remission” in paragraph4 mean?
A. The improvement of sight. B. A return of old signs.
C. The relief of SAD signs. D. The sudden mood change.
11. What treatment works best for SAD according to the text?
A. Bathing in daylight daily. B. Taking antidepressants.
C. Using both light with drugs. D. Having a long indoor rest.

In the summer of 2021, fires burned over 13,000 square metres of western Sardinia. Although it was caused by a car accident reported immediately, high temperatures, drought, and strong winds made the fire difficult to stop. Such fires will become more common in a warming world, so the island is preparing.
Carlo Poddii’s team at MEDSEA has set up 20 fire-detection (火灾探测) sensors in a forest in Sardinia as part of a pilot programme by Dryad Networks, supported by a telecoms firm. The sensors hang from branches and collect data on gases, temperature, humidity (湿度), and air pressure. AI models study the data. If unusual signs are found, a call for action is sent to the firefighting services.
Traditionally, fires on Sardinia are detected by sight from lookout towers, but in most cases, the fire is noticed only once it has started to spread. Dryad’s sensors work more like a sense of smell, identifying chemicals caused by smouldering (阴燃) before flames and smoke can be seen. This allows firefighters to act earlier.
The sensors cost $100 each and are placed every few hundred metres in high-risk areas like power lines and roads; this strategy can be tens of times cheaper than traditional methods. They can last 15 years and be updated from far away. The AI model must be tailored to local conditions, as a system for Italy may not work in Canada.
Dryad has run 50 pilot programmes, from Spain to Indonesia, with positive results. In Lebanon, sensors detected a small hidden fire within 30 minutes, whereas traditional methods would have taken hours. Other companies, like Breeze Technologies, have had similar success in California.
However, to make a real difference in the effective early detection of fires, large numbers of sensors are needed. Their success also depends on working together with other firefighting measures and avoiding false alarms. If these challenges are overcome, early detection can save lives.
Dryad has received a EUR3.8m funding to build drones that can be sent to sensor-spotted smouldering, providing live video to help firefighters. “Eventually,” says Brink Schulte, Dryad’s chief executive, “we want to digitise the forest.”
12. Why does the writer mention the fire in western Sardinia?
A. To praise local firefighters. B. To stress the need for new methods.
C. To describe a serious disaster. D. To prove a firefighting measure.
13. How do Dryad’s sensors help fight fires?
A. By finding signs of smouldering. B. By detecting flames and smoke.
C. By studying the data quickly. D. By sounding loud alarms.
14. What advantages do Dryad’s sensors have over traditional methods?
A. They work well in any country. B. They require no human operation.
C. They cost less and work faster. D. They can detect fires from a distance.
15. What can we infer about Dryad’s future goal?
A. To equip the forest digitally. B. To set up more lookout towers.
C. To run more pilot programs. D. To raise more funds for drones.

C
【答案】8. D 9. B 10. C 11. C

根据第三段“In a drug trial, for instance, it is relatively straightforward to give some patients real pills, but light treatment tests would mean keeping people away from daylight for long periods. Even if you can find the volunteers, doing so is only really possible in big institutions such as hospitals or care homes.(例如,在药物试验中,给部分患者服用真实药片相对简单,但光疗测试则需要让受试者长时间避免日光照射。即使能找到志愿者,也仅能在医院或养老院等大型机构中实现。)”可知,进行光照治疗测试很难是因为很难让受试者长时间避免日光照射。
【10题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第二段“Many people prefer to treat the root cause with bright light tools like desk lamps. Many doctors recommend them as a first-line treatment for the disorder.(许多人更倾向于通过使用台灯等明亮光源来治疗根本原因。许多医生建议将其作为该疾病的首选治疗方法。)”和倒数第三段“Despite those limitations, the findings look good. Last year a review of 21 studies, led by Tu Zhe-Ming at the Jingzhou Mental Health Centre in China, concluded that light treatment does indeed seem to work.(尽管存在这些局限性,研究结果仍令人乐观。去年,由中国荆州心理健康中心的图泽明牵头对21项研究进行综述后得出结论:光疗确实似乎有效。)”光疗使病人症状缓解,symptom remission的意思是“症状缓解”,和“The relief of SAD signs(SAD症状的缓解)”意思相近。
【11题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第二段“Here, again, the findings seem promising. Dr Bucuta’s review concluded that light treatment alone can help with depression in 44% of cases. When applied with antidepressants, that number rises to 76%. Doing both together seems better than taking drugs alone.(布库塔博士的综述指出,仅使用光照疗法即可帮助44%的病例缓解抑郁症状。若与抗抑郁药物联合使用,这一比例可提高至76%。两者结合治疗似乎比单独服药效果更佳。)”可知,对季节性情感障碍(SAD)最有效的是同时使用光照和药物。
D
【答案】12. B 13. A 14. C 15. A
