Getting in touch with friends is difficult after people change schools or move to different places. They don’t know how to start the conversation again if they don’t talk with their friends for a long time. Many people want to get in touch with old friends, but they are afraid to do so.
Psychologists (心理学家) from colleges did a study on how people feel about getting in touch with old friends. The study shows over 90% of the people don’t call their old friends. 70% of them don’t want to call their friends first, because they worry that their old friends won’t want to hear from them or are too busy to talk with them. Some people even think getting in touch with their old friends is as hard as talking to strangers.
Lara Aknin, one of the psychologists, said, “Most people are worried that they have different lifestyles and interests now. But these differences can be helpful for people to get close to each other. After sharing something new and interesting, they won’t feel embarrassed (尴尬的) at all. Instead, they know each other better.”

剪纸或撕纸艺术
Paper cutting or tearing (撕纸) is a cultural tradition in China. For centuries, it has been passed down from one generation (一代人) to the next, especially from mothers to daughters. This beautiful art created by skillful artists is used to decorate (装饰) doors, ceilings and beds in people’s homes or at celebrations, such as birthdays and weddings. At Chinese New Year, window flowers are glued to windows, creating beautiful pictures.
The two main techniques (技艺) used are cutting the paper using a knife or scissors, and tearing it by hand. If the paper is cut, the edges (边缘) are very smooth (光滑的). Paper cutting can produce very fine and delicate (精美的) work. This kind of work is typical in southern China. If the paper is torn by hand, the edges are more simple and natural. Tearing is used more in northeast China. In addition, different parts of China have their own motifs or pictures. These motifs can express many stories, ideas and feelings.
It can be hard to hold on to traditions like these because young people don’t know much about traditional art. Often they prefer spending their time on newer activities. The experts are getting older. If young people don’t learn the traditions, they won’t be able to pass them down to their own children. But recently there is a change. There are more exhibitions of traditional art. Artists are going into schools to teach children how to do paper cutting. Children enjoy working together with artists and talking to them about the meanings of their art. In this way, they are becoming proud of their culture and traditions.

How should we keep our friendship with others? Good friends are very important to us, so it’s not surprising that having a fight with a friend can make us feel very sad. Here are some useful ways to get along with friends.
Communicate with each other
Communication can help friends get to know us, and it can also help us get to know our friends. It is common to argue with our friends, because even our best friends may not understand us all the time. So in our lives, we should tell them our ideas and communicate with them often.
Be a good listener
When our friends have problems, we should listen to them first. Do not just share our own thoughts and stories all the time. Listening to friends carefully can make them feel that we truly care about them. Being a good listener can also help us better understand our friends’ feelings.
Use “I” messages
When we want to tell our friends something, we’d better use “I” messages. It’s better to say “I think” than “You should”. “You” messages may make our friends feel that we are ordering (命令) them to do something. It is terrible. So using “I” messages can make our friends more likely to follow our advice.
