One possible version:
Dear Tom,
How is everything going I'm writing to share a brisk walking activity I participated in last weekend.
Early in the morning, thousands of enthusiasts gathered at the city park. The moment the whistle blew,we
set off along a scenic route winding through our beautiful city.Throughout the five-kilometer walk, everyone
paced themselves well, chatting and cheering each other on in high spirits.
It was a thoroughly rewarding experience. Not only did it give me a fantastic workout, but it also offered a
fresh perspective on the city'slively morning life.

One possible version:
Soon, the roller coaster started. It moved forward, climbing higher and higher with painful slowness. My
eyes were shut tightly at first.I forced myself to open them, gathering a bit of courage as the ride kept
climbing.I held Christina's hand tightly and kept telling myself to be brave. Then I realized we were at the very
top.To my surprise,I felt something different as the roller coaster rushed down.A thrill washed over me.I
loved the high speed and the feeling of freedom.
After the ride,I felt extremely happy.I hugged my two sisters tightly and thanked them for their
insistence and support.I was so excited that I wanted to ride it a second time.Christina praised my bravery,
Jessica gave me some arcade prizes as gifts and my father congratulated me on successfully challenging myself.
Ever since that day,I've pushed myself to take on more scary rides.I've discovered that much of our fear is born
from imagination. When we face it head-on,fear transforms into excitement, confidence, and unforgettable
memories.

A篇
Building
Trades Artisans部分提到“Festival goers will meet inspiring young artisans who are learning the building crafts
Native Language Reclamation部分提到“To complement the language sessions, there will
be lacrosse demonstrations,Alutiiq social dances, and lessons in Mohawk basket making”,由此可知,Alutiq
开幕,且音乐节目在首日以“Made in D.C.”
1.the Fourth of July:
2.open mic:
Pittsburgh Center
根据第一段中的the imaginative youngster watched his parents and grandparents reuse.,
根据第三段中的a nonprofit organization with an unconventional art materials.,from
It involves the therapeutic use of narrative poems to promote a sense of
healing and well--being可知,诗歌疗法涉及将叙事诗用于治疗目的以促进情感疗愈,D项准确概括了这一信
息。A项“它由John Fox首次实践”错误,John Fox是诗歌治疗师并出版了著作,但文中未提及他是首创者;
lO.C推断。根据第四段中的individuals can engage in self-discovery and increase their sense of self-awareness
的giving a voice to them as well as acknowledging them(给感受发声并承认它们)也是自我理解的一部分,
根据题干关键词the author's view on good poems可将解题信息定位至最后一段前两
句:The best poems are often.,as forms of release.。
根据第二段中的just five high-income countries have been responsible for nearly all the
l3.A推断。 Not much bigger than a scuba tank和can go20,O00 feet underwater, reaching
98%of the ocean floor可分别推出它体积小、性能强,故选A项。
结合下文中的short-form interviews、a very limited time
window和giving you no time可知,E项(面试的最后一个变化是时长缩短)符合语境。
2l.B根据designed to help artists break out of a creative block和for every aspect of life可知,清晨随笔可以
23.C根据designed to help artists break out of a creative block和every aspect of life可知,这个方法最初的设
suddenly(突然)、secretly(秘密地)、desperately(迫
25.B根据something uncomfortable happened in my office.,,about being fired可知,办公室发生了不愉快的
26.Dour HR manager invited me to a meeting without sharing I was anxious and had no idea what to
与hit the road(出发,动身)类似。
I had some decisions to make about how I would..if things went south可知,作者在随笔中提到
30.D根据下句中的how easy it had been to advocate for myself(为自己辩护如此容易)可知,会议中作者清
admiration(钦佩)、respect(尊敬)、
sympathy(同情)均不符合为自己辩护的场景需求。
shocked。
32.D根据this pleasant surprise with the day's writing practice可知,作者很快意识到了顺利应对会议与清晨
connect..with..(将…
up填满,put aside忽视。
选transformed(改变)。
35.B根据前文提到的几年前读这本书并尝试写清晨随笔和此处的write my morning pages daily, and it has
语,故填when。
inspire sb to do sth是固定搭配,表示“激励某人做某事”,故填to explore。

As a child growing up in rural Pennsylvania, Ash Andrews rarely had the newest toy or game. Instead, the imaginative youngster watched his parents and grandparents reuse much of what came into the house and then adopted the practice, too. Andrews learned how to create fun out of what was already there — miniature (微小模型) cities grew from eggshells; plastic toy pieces became the city’s residents.
That creative spirit never left Andrews. Today, the artist and entrepreneur (企业家) is applying the same something-out-of-nothing skillset to promoting environmentally-friendly resourcefulness.
Much of this is done at the Pittsburgh Center for Creative Reuse, a nonprofit organization with an unconventional art materials shop that accepts what others won’t — things like worn-out decorations, boxes of buttons and misprints from local businesses. Since 2016, Andrews, along with his team, has inspired people to consider the impact reuse has on the community and environment. The work helps to meet the community’s creative and material needs, while also transforming 40 — 50 tons of material from landfills (垃圾填埋场) each year.
In 2023, the nonprofit worked with nearly 4,700 people through in-person and virtual workshops that created opportunities to do everything from building fun mini-scenes to making baskets out of old newspapers. Andrews manages the Creative Reuse artist-in-residency program, through which a local artist from an underrepresented community receives support and gallery space in the shop. Creative Reuse also partners with many local groups, such as the nearby Homewood Children’s Village, to provide educational activities and materials to low-income and historically underserved communities.
Encouraging reuse is a great way to build community, says Andrews. “People want to be a part of a community where resources are shared — from material to immaterial — and they find that full-circle at Creative Reuse.” Like the people Creative Reuse supports, Andrews knows there’s a lot you can achieve with imagination and heart, even if what you begin with doesn’t seem like much at all.
4. What skill did Andrews learn from his family?
A. Selling toys. B. Building houses. C. Repurposing items. D. Growing vegetables.
5. What do we know about the Pittsburgh Center for Creative Reuse?
A. It welcomes various unwanted stuff.
B. It organizes item exchange activities.
C. It helps foreign artists sell their works.
D. It offers free supplies to local businesses.
6. What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A. The way of starting a nonprofit group.
B. The long-established history of art in Pittsburgh.
C. The introduction of the artist-in-residency program.
D. The community-focused programs of Creative Reuse.
7. What does the underlined part “that full-circle” in the last paragraph refer to?
A. Completing a craft project from start to finish.
B. Giving back after receiving from the community.
C. Working on a farm and then returning to the city.
D. Learning art and then practicing it professionally.
C
Both the reading and writing of poetry can be therapeutic (有疗愈作用的), because whether we’re reading or writing poems, they help us engage our senses and our feelings. In fact, in 1993, a number of psychologists gathered in San Francisco with contemporary poets such as Galway Kinnell, Lucille Clifton, and Sharon Olds for a conference called “Poems Aloud”. James Hillman was the keynote speaker and claimed that “psychotherapy has its roots in poetry”.
Poetry therapy is a form of expression in the same way that art therapy is. It involves the therapeutic use of narrative poems to promote a sense of healing (治愈) and well-being. Poetry is often used alongside therapy because everyday experiences become transformed into a poem. This occurs through the use of vivid language.
In fact, poetry therapy dates back to 400 BCE, when Egyptians wrote to those who were ill as a form of medicine. In more contemporary times, writing and poetry have been used to help those experiencing emotional distress (痛苦). As poetry therapist John Fox says in his book Finding What You Didn’t Lose, “There is something deeply personal and private about poetry-making. It is a journey into the depths.” This journey is for both the poet and the reader.
When we set out to write for healing or engage in poetry therapy, it’s primarily about exploring feelings and accessing memories that might be hidden in the mind. In the process, individuals can engage in self-discovery and increase their sense of self-awareness. In addition, when we write down our feelings, we’re giving a voice to them as well as acknowledging them.
The best poems are often written when we have a sense of heightened emotions about something. They are raw, and the poems serve as forms of release. As poet Jane Hirshfield wrote in her book Ten Windows, “A good poem is comprehensive and thirsty. It pulls towards what is invisible to an overly directed looking, toward what is changeable, unstable, unprotected, and several-handed.”
8. Why is the 1993 conference “Poems Aloud” mentioned in paragraph 1?
A. To explain the history of poetry. B. To connect poetry and psychology.
C. To introduce famous modern poets. D. To explain how poetry therapy works.
9. What can be learned about poetry therapy?
A. It was first practiced by John Fox.
B. It focuses on reading poems to patients.
C. It is a concept created in modern times.
D. It uses narrative poems for emotional recovery.
10. How can poetry writing benefit people according to the text?
A. By improving their memory skills.
B. By enabling them to record life events.
C. By promoting their self-understanding.
D. By helping them forget painful experiences.
11. What can be inferred about the author’s view on good poems?
A. They require vivid language. B. They turn intense feelings into relief.

After decades of exploration, the deep seafloor is still the least understood habitat on Earth. This blind spot has long troubled explorer Katy Croff Bell. So Bell and a few researchers set out to assess the state of deep-sea exploration.
The results were even worse than they thought: A mere 0.001 percent of the deep seafloor has been visually observed. They found that though there have been some 44,000 deep-sea dives since the 1950s, many surveyed the same sites. Their findings also revealed that just five high-income countries have been responsible for nearly all the dives. The cost of deep-sea research is partly to blame for this situation. The price of an advanced tool ranges from tens of thousands to millions of dollars.
For almost a decade, Bell has been working to make the deep sea more accessible. Now, Bell and her coworkers are about to introduce a deep-sea vehicle called DORIS. It has many features of the multimillion-dollar devices — but at a cost of less than $10,000. Not much bigger than a scuba tank (潜水氧气瓶), the tool can go 20,000 feet underwater, reaching 98% of the ocean floor. The finished product is suited for a wide variety of ships and will be equipped with sensors to detect temperature, depth, and salinity (盐度), but its primary goal is to film the environment, helping scientists better study the sea.
Future upgrades will include the ability to collect samples and record sounds. Bell’s team is also cooperating with the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute to create machine learning models that can rapidly analyze all the data that the tool collects. Besides, Bell and her coworkers have identified thousands of locations that would greatly diversify and increase the number of surveyed sites. Exploring these points would “effectively double the number of unique locations around the world that we’ve seen”, Bell says.
DORIS is expected to help achieve this goal. Bell has never been more excited about the potential: “What’s left in the 99.999 percent that we haven’t seen yet?”

With AI and data analytics on the rise, it’s only natural to wonder what job interviews will look like in the next five years. In this article, we’ll examine how job interviews might change in the future.
Video calls are now normal for job interviews. One trend is using algorithms (算法) to track candidates’ words and facial expressions in video interviews. 16 In most cases, discussions are already totally automated. You speak with an “artificial intelligence” instead of a human resources manager. Humans tend to make debatable decisions due to their prejudices. 17 AI solves this issue by picking only those candidates whose talents meet the job’s requirements, so benefiting both the candidate and the business.
Keyword searching in resumes (简历) will be common. When assessing a candidate’s resume, recruiters (招聘者) often search for a specific set of abilities or work history. AI software can read through these materials and pull out relevant keywords from them. 18
Job interviews will become more competitive. Interviewers will be more focused on finding out what candidates can do. 19 If you plan on interviewing for a tech firm, then you have to prepare yourself for some tricky tech-related questions that the recruiter might put forward for you.
20 Most employers will adapt to short-form interviews, giving you a very limited time window to introduce yourself and sell your skills. This will further make the process more competitive, giving you no time to be silent, anxious, or tired during the interview.
A. It saves hiring managers a lot of time.
B. This may result in an unjust final decision.
C. Social networks will become your digital resume.
D. How those changes will turn out is anybody’s guess.
E. The last change in job interviews will be shorter durations.
F. The information is then used to help with selection procedures.
G. They will judge whether candidates can succeed in their new role.

My two older sisters, Christina and Jessica, love amusement parks. They go on the scariest rides. Every year, my father and I had the job of waiting in line for them for their next ride. But on this day, my older sister, Christina, encouraged me to ride the roller coaster with them. Without any hesitation, it was a no from me. But both sisters continued to persuade me. Christina said she would hold my hand during the ride and Jessica promised she would give me her arcade (游乐场) prizes if it wasn’t fun.
I had to admit that they were convincing. After thinking for a while, I slowly took Christina’s hand. She smiled and dragged me towards the huge line for the roller coaster. My hands were shaking from the fear I felt. Christina assured me again that it was going to be OK. Even my father encouraged me to go with them. So I felt pressured to give it a try. The huge heights of the roller coaster and other rides frightened me. I started to panic and become pessimistic about the situation.
“What if I was thrown out?” I thought to myself. I shook for 30 minutes as the line got shorter. As I got closer, I panicked even harder. I turned around to look for my dad so I could back out. But he was already out of sight; he’d walked off to find a spot to wave to us while we were on our ride. So I held on to my sister and took a deep breath.
When our turn came and a guy measured my height to see if I was tall enough, I bent my knees slightly. But he announced I was good. Then the three of us took the front seats. We raised our hands as the staff locked us in with seatbelts. I double-checked to make sure they were locked. They didn’t make me feel safe at all. I shook with fear. “It’s going to be fine. Trust me,” Christina said.
