In 2022, I was named the national student poet, one of the country’s highest honors for youth writers. Recently, I took an online quiz comparing AI-generated poetry with classic human poems. Yet, I faced a humbling reality: I couldn’t tell the difference between a masterpiece by T.S. Eliot and an AI-generated piece.
Apparently, I am not alone. A study showed that people prefer to appreciate AI-generated poems over those famous poets like Emily Dickinson. Interestingly, AI-written poetry was rated higher in terms of “rhythm and beauty”. This suggests AI is surpassing humans in creative fields like essay writing and painting. Many in the literary community feel upset, but I believe the problem lies with us, not the AI.
The real issue lies in our declining literary patience. Today, fewer people read or listen to poems regularly. When people meet poetry, they are often drawn to “Insta-poetry”—short, straightforward poems popularized on social media. While this form of poetry is more accessible, it fails to challenge people to interpret deeper meanings like traditional poetry.
This helps explain why AI poetry may feel more attractive. The words of AI don’t come from reality but from an algorithm (算法) based on data. When exposed to AI-generated poems, people do not have to slow down, reread a line, or think hard about a difficult metaphor. Human poetry, by contrast, often asks people to struggle with uncertainty. It may not offer an immediate answer, but an invitation to enter another mind and another experience.
My encounter with AI was less of a defeat than a wake-up call—the true value of poetry lies in the life-long process of uncovering what we have yet to understand. When I mistook a T.S. Eliot poem for AI, I found out there was another beautiful poem I had yet to appreciate, and a lot more room for me to grow.
