If you face difficulties in your life, how would you make a change? In the book Educated, the US writer Tara Westover shows us how she faced hard times and the power of education (教育).
Before turning 17, Tara never left her small mountain village in Idaho, US. It’s a very far place. Even worse, her father didn’t let his children go to school. But her elder brother studied by himself and went to university (大学). When he came back, he told Tara exciting stories about the world outside the village. This made Tara want to try a new life. She started learning math, grammar and science on her own. When she had problems, she looked for answers in books or asked others for help. After years of hard work, she passed the American College Test successfully and got into Brigham Young University. She even studied at Cambridge University and got a PhD (博士学位) in history later.
Education helps girls like Tara to see a bigger world, letting them fly like birds toward their own goals. “Education helped me break free from the limits (限制) of my family and become a better person.” Tara said,“I wish all of us to be like free and powerful birds, growing and changing through difficulties.”
25. How does the writer start the topic?
A. By giving an example. B. By asking a question. C. By telling a story. D. By describing a place.
26. What can we learn about Tara from paragraph 2?
A. Her brothers did not go to university. B. She never left the small mountain village.
C. She finally studied at Cambridge University. D. Her father always encouraged her to go to school.
27. Which of the following best describes Tara?
A. Outgoing and kind-hearted. B. Humorous and popular.
C. Hard-working and strong-minded. D. Straightforward and friendly.
28. What is the main purpose (目的) of this text?
A. To explain how to get into a university. B. To show how education can change a life.
C. To describe what life is like in villages. D. To introduce why family is so important.

Plants might look like they are doing nothing, but in fact they are very busy. And what they’re doing is very “smart”.
In the 1980s, two scientists in the USA found that plants can “talk” to each other. They planted several young trees in different pots and put them inside a clear and closed box. When they cut leaves on one young tree, it made a chemical (化学物质) to try to protect itself. Then, about 36 hours later, the other trees made the same chemical. This showed that the hurt tree sent a signal (信号) through the air to the others. Since then, other scientists have had more findings. For example, plants can send different signals when they are hurt by different insects. Their messages can even tell other plants how far away the danger is.
What’s more, plants can even learn. In 2014, scientists from the University of Western Australia and the University of Florence in Italy did a study. They found that mimosa plants (含羞草) can learn and remember things—even though they don’t have brains. The scientists dropped water on the mimosa plants again and again. The result showed that once the mimosa plants realized the water drops weren’t dangerous to them, they stopped curling (卷曲) their leaves. What’s more, they still remembered this fact weeks later.
Plants don’t have brains, so how do they learn? They have tubes (导管) that move water within them. When plants are affected, they make some chemicals. These chemicals move through the tubes to send important messages. This helps the plants act differently when the situation changes.
29. What did the scientists in the USA find in the 1980s?
A. Plants can hurt insects. B. Plants have strong minds.
C. Plants can “talk” to each other. D. Plants have to live in clear places.
30. What does the underlined word “them” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. The mimosa plants. B. The scientists. C. The water drops. D. The brains.
31. According to the passage, plants can learn without brains by ________.
A. curling their leaves B. changing the situations
C. drinking the water drops D. using tubes to move chemicals
32. What’s the best title for the passage?
A. Amazing Trees: They Can Send Signals
B. Great Scientists: They Can Make Plants Talk
C. Clever Plants: They Can Change Their Leaves
D. Smart Plants: They Can Communicate and Learn
第二部分(非选择题)
Have you ever made a musical instrument? You can easily do this with things around you, such as glass bottles. To start, you need five glass bottles with nothing inside. You also need some water and something to use for tapping (敲), such as a spoon.
Once you have everything ready, you can begin to make your water music. First, fill each bottle with a different level (水平) of water. Then, line the bottles up from the lowest water level to the highest. Tap each one lightly with the spoon and listen carefully. You will notice that some make higher sounds and others make lower sounds. Have you ever thought about why they sound different?
When something vibrates (震动), it makes a sound and how fast the bottle vibrates decides the pitch (音高). When you tap a bottle without any water, it vibrates quickly and makes a high-pitched sound. When you add more water, the bottle becomes heavier and vibrates more slowly, and the sound is lower. So if there is more water in the bottle, the pitch will be lower. It’s the other way around when there is less water.
Now you understand how it works. It’s super easy and a lot of fun. Why not play your own song?

【32题详解】
最佳标题题。根据“Plants might look like they are doing nothing, but in fact they are very busy. And what they’re doing is very ‘smart’.”以及全文内容可知,文章主要介绍了植物很聪明,它们可以互相交流,还可以学习。故选D。
