【导语】本文是一篇健身气功动作指南,详细介绍了八段锦的八个步骤及练习前的准备要求。
【56题详解】
由“Preparation: Find a quiet place... relax. When you feel peaceful”可知,准备时应先让自己平静下来。
由“Preparation: Remember to breathe deeply through the exercise”可知,练习八段锦需要全程保持深呼吸,因此C项正确。由“Baduanjin is one of the most popular Chinese qigong exercises”可知,原文说的是八段锦是“最受欢迎的气功之一”,并非“中国最受欢迎的运动”,因此A项错误。由表格最后一行“Steps 1, 6, 8 should be repeated six times each, and the others three times each”可知,只有第1、6、8步重复六次,其余步骤重复三次,并非所有步骤都重复六次,因此B项错误。

Have you wondered how your pets are feeling? When your dog wave its tail, does that mean it is happy? A new app called Happy Pets can tell you what’s going on.
The app uses artificial intelligence (AI) to analyze (分析) the facial expressions of cats and dogs. Then it can tell you what type your pet is and how it is feeling. It can show the five most common feelings—happy, angry, neutral (不带感情色彩的), sad and scared.
Researchers at the University of Melbourne developed the app. The key technology used in the app is facial recognition (识别), a common use of AI. We can unlock our mobile phones or enter train stations with facial recognition readers. But this is the first time that the technology has been used with animals.
The app’s AI was first taught to recognize a picture of an animal. Then, it was taught to recognize the facial features of cats and dogs. Next came the most important step—teaching it to detect feelings based on certain facial features. For example, if a dog tightens (使变紧) up its eyes and mouth while changing the position of its ears, this means the dog is scared. To master this skill, the AI program “saw” and “read” thousands of example images.
How correct are the results? The researchers think they are trustworthy since the app has been tested many times. Interestingly, they have found that cats are harder to read than dogs. In the future, the app might also be able to analyze a pet’s body to make its readings more correct.

People question whether social media (媒体) is making modern society less empathetic (有同感的). Some studies show that heavy social media users are less empathetic, while others suggest quite the opposite.
To learn more about the question, we asked over 1,250 American participants (参与者) how often they checked social media. They also completed questionnaires (问卷) where they decided whether they have the qualities that researchers call empathy, such as thinking from other people’s point of view, feeling worried for other people in trouble, and feeling bad when others feel bad.
Our study found that the more social media people reported using, the lower their levels of empathy were. This finding didn’t change much according to the type of social media they use, their gender (性别), or education. However, we only asked American adults. Is it possible that the relationship we found would not be true elsewhere?
Indeed, researchers in other areas have found different results. Researchers in the UK, Spain, and the Netherlands have shown that, in their countries, the higher people used social media, the higher empathy they had. An Indian study found no relationship between the two.
To learn the big picture, we compared (比较) all these studies. We found that the relationship between social media use and empathy differed based on two things: age and nationality. In general, studies carried out in Europe found a positive (积极的) connection between social media use and empathy, while studies in the U.S. found no meaningful or negative (消极的) connection. Besides, research done with children under 18 showed a positive connection, while research with adults found no connection.
Cultural differences may explain the difference. Americans are more likely to post news about their personal achievements online. It is no surprise that Americans who use social media often are not developing their empathy skills. But populations outside of America appear to use social media for different purposes, including strengthening friendships. For them, more social media use is connected with being more empathetic. Perhaps people’s purposes for using social media can tell us more about their character.
71. What is the main purpose of the research described in the passage?
A. To prove that social media makes people less empathetic.
B. To study the influence of social media on American adults.
C. To compare the empathy levels of different nationalities.
D. To discover the relationship between social media use and empathy.
72. Which of the following factors (因素) about the participants was important for the first study?
A. Age. B. Gender. C. Interest. D. Income.
73. According to the passage, which of the following statements is true?
A. All studies show that heavy social media users are less empathetic.
B. The relationship between social media use and empathy is the same in all countries.
C. Research showed a positive connection between social media use and empathy in the UK, Spain and the Netherlands.
D. American adults using social media often are more likely to develop their empathy skills.
74. Which statement will the writer probably agree with?
A. Indians like to show off online.
B. Children are more empathetic than adults.

D. Reasons behind social media use show a person’s character.

The fans could produce electricity (电能) by riding the bikes or dancing on the floors on their own.
This year, Coldplay is continuing to go green. The band released (发行) its tenth album (专辑), Moon Music, on October 4. The records (唱片) are made from plastic waste.
Coldplay has worked closely with Ocean Cleanup to make these records. The Dutch (荷兰的) group uses large fences (围栏) and special boats to clean up plastic waste in rivers and oceans. It puts the fences in many different rivers. The fences let the water flow through and stop the rubbish at the same time. Coldplay supports Ocean Cleanup’s work. It often donates money to Ocean Cleanup.
What kind of plastic waste makes good records? The group uses PET, a high-quality plastic. The plastic waste has to be very clean. Ocean Cleanup collects plastic waste from the river Rio Las Vacas, because it meets their needs. The plastic waste is separated and mixed. Then, it is tested and used to make the records. These records have good sound quality. Each record is about 140 grams in weight. One record is made from nine old PET plastic bottles.
66. The app Happy Pets is used to ________.

C. Americans are more empathetic than Europeans.
D. Reasons behind social media use show a person’s character.
75. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A. The Positive Influence of Social Media on Empathy.
B. Why Americans Are Less Empathetic on Social Media.
C. Social Media and Empathy: A Complex (复杂的) Relationship.
D. How to Develop Empathy Skills through Social Media.
