①Betty lived in a small town. Beautiful flowers were seen everywhere in the town. Because of the shyness, Betty just stood with few words in public. The shy girl hardly talked to people in social activities. She was often considered as a quiet girl in the community. She felt like a wallflower and wondered if she would go unnoticed all the time.
② However, her closest friend, Fiona, was completely different. Fiona loved to communicate with others and she encouraged Betty to change. She told Betty that life wasn’t always as beautiful as roses and that everyone was able to make it full of roses.
③With the encouragement of Fiona, Betty began to change. Instead of being a wallflower, she started attending (参加) a community theater class. She took an active part in acting in the theater group. Her gift for acting began to shine. However, new difficulties were never far away. One of Betty’s classmates became a thorn (刺) in her side. All the changes made her feel fresh every day.
④ Betty’s hard work paid off when the town’s famous director, Mr. Johnson, watched one of her plays. He liked her acting so much that he offered her the lead role in his new play. Betty’s moment arrived. People were happy to watch her show.
⑤ Finally, Betty became a confident girl. Her change was like a beautiful rose in full flower. She encountered many difficulties which taught her that there’s no rose without a thorn. For the past 20 years, scientists have been growing human cells (细胞) where you wouldn’t quite expect them. Human ears have greatly been grown on mice. And human hearts have even been grown inside pigs’ bodies. Now, according to a recent study, scientists have shown it’s possible to grow human teeth in a pig’s mouth. They think this could one day replace the not so perfect dental implants (种植牙) we use now.
Dental implants, usually made from metal, have become more popular in recent years. But they aren’t perfect. If they aren’t lined up right, they can harm the bones of our mouth and they may fall over time. Natural teeth, however, might reduce the risk brought by implants in the long run. That’s why scientists are trying to grow natural teeth in pigs.
Scientists took cells from a human tooth and mixed them with cells from a pig tooth. These new cells were put into a special machine for a week to grow. Then scientists placed them into the mouths of several test pigs. A few months later, tooth-like materials formed.
In their experiment, the scientists took six two-year-old mini pigs and removed some of their teeth. Mini pigs were chosen because their mouths are similar in size and shape to humans’. About 50% of the pigs had successful teeth growth.
Though the results are good, they won’t lead to usable teeth for humans just yet. Still, scientists say this could be the start of replacing metal teeth in the future.
26. How does the writer begin the passage?
A. By asking questions. B. By telling stories.
C. By giving examples. D. By listing numbers.
27. What makes natural teeth better than dental implants?
A. They are safer. B. They are harder.
C. They are whiter. D. They are cheaper.
28. What does the third paragraph mainly talk about?
A. The goal of the experiment. B. The reason of the experiment.
C. The process of the experiment. D. The difficulty of the experiment.
29. Why are mini pigs suitable for the experiment?
A. Their teeth grow very fast. B. Their teeth are good in size.
C. Their mouth is like humans. D. Their mouth is much cleaner.
30. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. These special teeth will be used soon. B. Experiments should be done on humans.
C. More research is still needed in the future. D. Scientists aren’t confident about the results.
