In China, parents think a good name is very important for their child. They believe it can bring good luck.
A Chinese name has two parts: the family name and the given name. The family name comes first. Most family names are one Chinese character (汉字). A few have two. Most given names have two characters. Some have one, and a few have three.
In Chinese names, the family name is first. This is different from Western names. There are thousands of Chinese family names. But most people have one of the top 100 common family names.
In China, women usually keep their own family name after marriage (结婚). Today, a child’s family name can be the same as the father’s or the mother’s. In the past, it was usually the father’s.
In some Chinese families, cousins or brothers and sisters share a common character in their given names. This shared character is called a generation name (字辈). It helps show they belong to the same family generation. This character can be the first or the second one in their two—character given name.
