Many users from the US joined Xiaohongshu in 2025, and Chinese users jokingly asked them to pay a “cat tax (税)” by sharing a photo of their cats. In return, Chinese users would send pictures of their own cats.
After looking at hundreds of cat photos, some people noticed something interesting: The cats posted by Chinese users were rounder than those shared by American users. But why?
According to the website Furbby, one key reason is the living environment. In China, many families live in high-rise apartments. To keep their cats safe, owners usually keep them inside the house. However, many American homes have larger living spaces and backyards, so cats can climb and play here and there.
Cultural differences may also play a role, reported Inf News. In Chinese culture, roundness means unity (团结) and perfection, while Americans value an adventurous spirit. So they encourage their pets to run around and stay active.
Family influence is another reason. “My parents always show their love by making delicious food for me, so I treat my cat the same way,” explained a Chinese user from Heilongjiang.
The difference in cat body shapes between China and the US shows cultural differences between the two countries. Whether it is a fit American cat or a round Chinese cat, as long as they are healthy, that’s what really counts.
19. What does the underlined word “them” in Paragraph 1 refer to?
A. Chinese users. B. Chinese cats. C. American users. D. American cats.
20. According to the article, what are the reasons for different shapes of cats between China and the US?
① photo-taking skills ② living environment ③ cultural difference ④ family influence
A. ②③④ B. ①②④ C. ①③④ D. ①②③
21. What is the main purpose of this passage?
A. To compare cat body shapes between two countries.
B. To introduce an interesting cat tax interaction online.
C. To advise people to raise more pet cats worldwide.
D. To explain cultural differences in cat-raising habits.
C 20. A 21. D

原文第一段开头“Many users from the US joined Xiaohongshu in 2025, and Chinese users jokingly asked them to pay a ‘cat tax’”,句中them指代前文刚提到的“Many users from the US”。
第三段“one key reason is the living environment”居住环境(②) 2. 第四段“Cultural differences may also play a role”文化差异(③) 3.
文章先提出中美猫咪体型不同的现象,分层剖析背后环境、文化、家庭的深层原因,结尾升华:“The difference in cat body shapes between China and the US shows cultural differences between the two countries”,核心目的是通过养猫习惯的差异解读两国文化区别。

On Saturday morning, all the summer world was sweet and fresh. There was cheer in every face and a spring in every step, except Tom Sawyer.
Aunt Polly made him paint their fence as a punishment. It was 90 feet long and 9 feet high. He stared at the fence, and all gladness left him. He painted one board and stopped. “This will take forever,” he sighed.
He knew the boys with all kinds of toys would soon come along and make fun of him—the very thought of it burnt him like fire. At this dark and hopeless moment, an idea came to him! He went back to work quietly.
Ben Rogers came along the road. He was singing happily and carrying a big apple.
Tom went on painting, paying no attention to him. Ben stared a moment and called Tom.
No answer. Tom surveyed his last touch with the eye of an artist, then he gave his brush another gentle sweep. Ben called him again.
“Why, it’s you, Ben! I wasn’t noticing,” Tom turned suddenly and said.
“I’m going to swim,” said Ben. “Do you want to come? Oh, you have to work, don’t you? What a pity!”
“I’m not working.” Tom answered carelessly. “Well, maybe it is working, but I like it.”
“What?” shouted Ben. “You like it?”
“Well, I don’t see why I shouldn’t.” Tom kept painting, and said. “Boys don’t get to paint a fence every day.”
That put the thing in a new light. Ben stopped eating his apple and watched Tom for a while. Tom swept his brush gently back and forth. The fence looked clean and white. Before long, Ben really wanted to paint, too! “Let me try a little,” he begged Tom.
Tom considered, “No, Ben, I can’t. Aunt Polly warned me to do it well. Only one boy in a thousand has the talent to paint.”
“Oh, please, Tom,” said Ben. “I can do it. I’ll be very careful. I’ll give you half my apple. Wait, I’ll give you all of it.”
Tom gave Ben his brush with worry on his face but joy in his heart. Tom rested under the tree. He ate the apple and smiled.
Other boys came, too. By early that afternoon, Tom had got many new toys, ________. Aunt Polly was so pleased that she gave Tom a shiny red apple.
22. What did Aunt Polly make Tom do as a punishment?
A. She made him paint their fence. B. She made him plant the trees.
C. She made him carry some apples. D. She made him work with Ben.
23. Why did Tom survey his last touch with the eye of an artist?
A. Because he really loved to paint the fence.
B. Because he didn’t want to have a talk with Ben.

24. Which sentence can be put in the ________?
A. and he had returned the apple to Ben.
B. and the whole fence was fully painted.
C. but other boys had made fun of him.
D. but he had finished the work by himself.

The history of traffic lights dates back to the early 19th century in Britain. London was a busy city with horse-drawn carriages (马车). They often rushed into people, causing many accidents. At the same time, there was a fashion rule in London—women in red showed that they were married and green for unmarried. This gave people the idea of using red and green as traffic signs later.
On December 10th, 1868, British mechanic (机械师) Hart designed the world's first traffic light with only red and green. A policeman had to pull a belt to change the lights: red meant “stop”, and green meant “go”. At first, it worked well and reduced accidents. However, this traffic light broke down after 23 days. The light was turned off, but the idea stayed alive.
In 1914, electric traffic lights were first used in America. Red and green still did their jobs. Then they were safer and easier to see.
In 1927, a Chinese student named Hu Ruding was studying in the US. He noticed drivers sometimes rushed when the light changed. “What if there’s a middle color to slow people down?” he thought. That’s how the yellow light was born, meaning “get ready to stop.” Around the same time, an American policeman named William Potts created the first three-color traffic lights for all directions. They made crossroads much safer.
These colors were not chosen by chance. Red is easy to see, like a fire alarm, so it means “danger—stop!” Yellow is a warning, like a sign that says “be careful—slow down!”Green, like a forest, tells us “safe to go!” Together, they form a common language that keeps us safe every day.
Great ideas come from everyday things. Whether traffic lights or something else, noticing and thinking “what if” can change the world!
56. When did the world’s first traffic light with only red and green appear?
It appeared ________________.
57. Which word in Paragraph 2 has the closest meaning to “to make something less or smaller”?
It is “________________”.
58. Who suggested adding a yellow light to traffic signs?
________________ suggested adding a yellow light.
59. What is the passage mainly about?
The passage is mainly about the ________________ of traffic lights.
60. According to the writer’s opinion, what should we do? (In no more than 10 words)
We should ____________________________________________________.
on December 10th, 1868

第二段首句明确指出:“On December 10th, 1868, British mechanic Hart designed the world's first traffic light with only red and green.”
第二段中提到:“At first, it worked well and reduced accidents.”。
第四段开头提到:“In 1927, a Chinese student named Hu Ruding was studying in the US... ‘What if there’s a middle color to slow people down?’ he thought.”。随后文中提到“That’s how the yellow light was born”。
文章最后一段点明了作者的观点:“Great ideas come from everyday things. Whether traffic lights or something else, noticing and thinking ‘what if’ can change the world!”。

When I was your age, my mum always told me, “I just want you to be happy.” She didn’t care what I grew up to be as long as I promised to stay happy. But what exactly is happiness? Is it a destination, or is it more like a road that never ends?
Is happiness on social media? It sure seems that way. People love posting perfect pictures of their best moments online. But if you ever want to feel bad about your life, just jump online and scroll through those posts. Platforms like Instagram and Xiaohongshu make us believe that we could be prettier, healthier, wealthier, and of course, happier. Plenty of research has linked social media use to low moods. One U.S. study found that people who use social media for more than 2 hours a day are twice as likely to feel lonely.
But what if we’re the ones posting? When we share a happy moment, we must have felt happy, right? Well, yes, but over the years, I’ve come to discover—and experience—the “hedonic treadmill”. We get excited when something good happens, but after a while, we return to feeling the same as before. In other words, happiness only lasts for so long. As the effects of one “happy” moment wear off, we set out in search of new sources of happiness. And social media has made this search harder than ever.
Happily, there’s still hope for us to find lasting happiness: It’s called “emotional authenticity”. This happens when we allow ourselves to feel and process emotions like anger, disappointment, fear, and sadness. It’s not easy, but when we are honest about our experiences, we build deeper and more meaningful connections with others. And those friendships bring us smiles that last much longer than any number of “likes” on a screen!
Remember that happiness isn’t about chasing a picture-perfect life. Trying to be happy all the time is like trying to catch a unicorn—it’s just not going to happen. Instead, focus on your own journey and accept the variety of emotions you’ll feel along the way.
72. Some researchers have found that heavy social media users ________.
A. are happier than others.
B. tend to feel lonely more easily.
C. only experience short-term happiness
D. usually have twice as many friends as others.
73. Which line in the following chart correctly shows the change in our emotions after something happy happens to us?
A. A B. B C. C D. D
74. If you argue with your best friend and feel sad, what should you do according to emotional authenticity mentioned in Para. 4?
A. Cheer up fast and hide your sad feelings B. Show your real feelings and talk honestly
C. Let your friend say sorry to you first D. Tell your sadness to many people online
75. What does the author want to tell people with the unicorn-catching analogy (类比) in the last paragraph?
A. A picture-perfect life is our common goal. B. Constant happiness is impossible to achieve.
C. Friendship is the key to real happiness. D. Happiness is a destination for all of us.
76. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?
A. Happy Moments Online B. Different Ideas about Joy
C. Unlock Real Happiness D. Always Avoid Bad Moods
B 73. C 74. B 75. B 76. C

根据第三段中“We get excited when something good happens, but after a while, we return to feeling the same as before. In other words, happiness only lasts for so long.”
根据第四段中“This happens when we allow ourselves to feel and process emotions like anger, disappointment, fear, and sadness. It’s not easy, but when we are honest about our experiences.”
根据最后一段中“Trying to be happy all the time is like trying to catch a unicorn—it’s just not going to happen.”

D. Because he wanted to make Ben interested in his work.
24. Which sentence can be put in the ________?
