Passage1
The secret of growth
The tiny egg cell (卵细胞) you grew from was smaller than the head of a needle. By the time you are fully grown, your body will be up to 20, 000 times larger. That's a lot of growing!
The secret to growth lies in your cells. In all animals-humans included-growth happens when cells get bigger, break apart to create new cells, and connect together. Even when you stop getting taller, this cellular activity never truly ends. Your body continues to renew itself throughout your life as worn-out cells are replaced by new ones. Your skin, muscles, blood, bones-even your brain-are constantly renewing themselves. In fact, every 7 to 10 years, nearly all the cells in your body are replaced, meaning you're not the same person you were a few years ago!
Different parts of your body grow at different speeds. By age 10, your head is already close to its adult size, while the rest of your body may need another 10 years to catch up. Inside your body, organs like your heart, lungs, and liver each follow their own growth timetable. Your height comes mainly from how your bones develop, especially your spine (脊柱) and the long bones in your arms and legs.
Growth doesn't happen at a steady pace. It speeds up quickly during two main times of fast growth: the first when you are a baby, and the second when you are a teenager. During your first year of life, you grew about 25 centimetres! After that period, growth slowed down to 3 - 8 centimetres each year. But during your teenage years, you might suddenly grow 10 centimetres or more in a single year.
Your adult height is mostly set by the genes you get from your parents. To reach this natural height, your body needs good building materials: healthy food, enough sleep, exercise, and sunshine for strong bones.
1. "In all animals-humans included-growth happens when cells get bigger, break apart to create new cells, and connect together."
2. "In fact, every 7 to 10 years, nearly all the cells in your body are replaced, meaning you're not the same person you were a few years ago!"
重点:被动语态are replaced表示“被替换、被更替”;现在分词meaning作结果状语,相当于which means,可译为“这意味着”;you were a few years ago是省略关系代词that的定语从句,修饰先行词person。
3. "By age 10, your head is already close to its adult size, while the rest of your body may need another 10 years to catch up."

Passage2
It's Never Too Late to Be All You Can Be 成为更好的自己,永远不晚
On the first day of school, our professor introduced himself and challenged us to get to know someone we didn't already know. I stood up to look around when a gentle hand touched my shoulder. I turned around to find a wrinkled, little old lady with a smile. She said, "Hi, handsome! My name is Rose. I'm eighty-seven years old. Can I give you a hug?"
I laughed and warmly responded, "Of course you may!"She gave me a giant squeeze (拥抱). "Why are you in college at such a young, innocent age?"I asked.
She jokingly replied, "I'm here to meet a rich husband, get married, have a couple of children, and then retire and travel."
"No, seriously?" I asked. I was curious what may have motivated her to be taking on this challenge at her age.
"I always dreamed of having a college education and now I'm getting one!" she told me.
After class, we walked to the Student Union building and shared a chocolate milkshake. We became instant friends. Every day of the next three months, we would leave class together and talk nonstop. I was always attracted listening to this "time machine"as she shared her wisdom and experience with me.
Over the course of the year, Rose became a campus icon (校园偶像) and she easily made friends wherever she went. She loved to dress up and enjoyed the attention from other students. She was living it up.
At the end of the term, we invited Rose to speak at a student gathering. I'll never forget what she taught us. "We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing. There are only four secrets to staying young, being happy, and achieving success. You have to laugh and find humour every day. You've got to have a dream. When you lose your dreams, you die. There are so many people walking around who are dead, and they don't even know it,"she said.
"There is a huge difference between growing older and growing up. Anybody can grow older. That doesn't take any talent or ability," she added. "But growing up requires finding opportunities in change. Have no regrets. The elderly usually don't have regrets for what we did, but rather for things we did not do."
She concluded her speech by courageously singing The Rose. She challenged each of us to study the lyrics and live them out in our daily life.
At the year's end, Rose finished the college degree she had begun years ago. We'd always keep her in mind because she is the wonderful woman who taught us by example that it's never too late to be all you can possibly be.
1. "I was always attracted listening to this 'time machine' as she shared her wisdom and experience with me."
2. "We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing."
3. "We'd always keep her in mind because she is the wonderful woman who taught us by example that it's never too late to be all you can possibly be."
重点:`because`引导原因状语从句;`who`引导定语从句,修饰先行词`woman`;`that`引导宾语从句,作`taught`的直接宾语;固定句型`it's never too late to do sth`意为“做某事永远不晚”;短语`by example`表示“以身作则、以实例示范”。

Passage1
I’m not the kind of mother who normally brushes and styles her daughter’s hair, and my daughter has never liked sitting quietly long enough for me to do it.
But today, I put a chair outside and let my daughter Sally sit on it. She was sitting high with her eyes closed, skin still wet from the shower, and her messy hair behind her back.
I realized she was taking in every touch from my hands. It was the last time for a week that our bodies would connect. Today, I would send Sally away for a week of summer camp. She didn’t ask to go. This was all my idea. She’s nearly 12, and I notice that I’m with my child nearly 24 hours a day.
Living on a farm without any neighbors, I’ve chosen a life that is quieter than a usual family’s. But instead of requiring space away from me, Sally has increasingly depended on me.
What worries me most is that she has become a “mini-me”. She follows my hobbies, my dreams, and my opinions. And that was why I pulled her to the summer camp, a nearby wilderness (荒野) camp called Hawk Circle.
After we ate, I drove Sally to Hawk Circle. Once there, we got a tour of the grounds and were introduced to other campers. Sally stood by the group of children, holding my hand, horror in her eyes, trying to work up the courage to join a game of soccer. “I need you for a few more minutes,” she told me, holding my hand tightly (紧紧地).
I pulled away and walked up to one of the camp’s workers. “Excuse me,” I said loudly, “I’d like to introduce you to my daughter. Maybe you could help her meet a few of these kids.” He came over to talk to Sally, and I kissed her and then I disappeared before she realized I was gone.
On my way home, I felt a piece of my soul had been taken from my body. I began to shake. The tears (泪水) came down my face. It took every bit of my strength to keep driving forward.
When I arrived home, I calmed down and reminded myself why I chose this path. I thought to myself, “I want Sally to have a chance to find herself, out of my shadow. I don’t want to see only myself in my child. I want to learn who she is. If I don’t set her free, I fear I’ll never really meet her real personality.”
After 12 years of being together, I want to finally meet my daughter for the first time.

He had watched many sunrises here and knew that the beautiful sight always came after long patience. I hesitated for a minute and finally chose to stay with him.
We sat side by side and chatted about the mountains, animals and local life. An hour passed, the clouds started to break little by little. Golden light came out from gaps in the clouds, and the whole Himalayas turned warm and bright. The red sun jumped up slowly above the mountain line. All the people who stayed shouted with joy.

A short video of her determined walk spread quickly online. Millions were inspired by her independence and simple strength. "It was just an ordinary way to move my things-nothing special," Liu said, adding that she often uses a pole to help with farm work at home.

"I'm still just me, and the road ahead is mine to walk."
When asked about her dreams, Liu's eyes shone with determination. "I want to become a teacher. My own teachers planted seeds of hope in me. After college,"
