Last term, our class started a project called “A Role Model Around Me”. At first, I thought role models must be famous people on television. Then our teacher asked us to look carefully at ordinary people in our school. I began to notice Mr. Zhao, the old worker who repaired desks, watered flowers and opened the gate every morning. He was not tall or strong, but he always smiled at students and did small things with great patience. One rainy day, I saw him standing ____21____ the school gate with a large umbrella. He helped younger students cross the wet road safely before he went back to his room.

A role model is not always a person who stands on a large stage or appears in the news. In many cases, a role model is someone who shows good qualities through everyday actions. In a vocational school, students may learn from a skilled teacher, a careful nurse, a brave firefighter, a patient class monitor or a worker who keeps the school safe and clean. These people help others without asking for special praise. Their value is shown in what they do, not only in what they say. Some students may pass them every day without noticing them, but their quiet work keeps the school warm and orderly.
A good role model usually has three important qualities. First, he or she has a clear goal. A person with a goal knows why he or she works hard. Second, a role model is responsible. When difficulties appear, responsible people do not give up easily. They try to solve problems step by step. Third, a role model is willing to help others. Some people become great because their work brings hope to many people. Others are respected because they bring warmth to one person at a time.
For students, learning from role models does not mean copying everything they do. It means understanding their spirit and putting it into daily study and life. If a student studies carefully, keeps promises, works with classmates and helps people in need, he or she is already following the light of a role model. Day by day, these small choices can become strong habits.
36.A role model must be someone who appears in the news.

Last April, Li Ming, a student from a vocational school, joined a community safety activity. His group visited a fire station to learn about firefighters’ daily work. Before the visit, Li Ming thought firefighters only put out fires. After talking with Captain Wu, he found that their work was much wider. They checked buildings, taught children how to escape from danger, rescued people in floods and helped families in traffic accidents. The team also prepared safety posters for markets and explained emergency calls to older people who lived alone.
Captain Wu told the students a story. One summer evening, heavy rain filled a small street with water. A child was trapped in a low house while his parents were away. The team arrived quickly. The water was rising, and the door could not be opened from outside. Captain Wu tied a rope around his waist, broke a window carefully and carried the child out. He was hurt by broken glass, but he said, “Protecting people is my duty.”
The visit changed Li Ming’s plan for study. He used to be careless in training classes, but after the activity he became serious about every practical lesson. He learned first aid, checked tools before class and helped classmates practise safety steps. In his report, he wrote that a role model is not far away. A brave person’s spirit can turn into a student’s daily action. He also decided to become a skilled worker who could serve society with both hands and heart. Whenever he felt bored with repeated practice, he remembered the rope around Captain Wu’s waist and became careful again.

C
In modern China, many young people learn about role models through stories of scientists. Two stories are often mentioned because they show how knowledge can serve human life. One story is about a rice scientist who spent many years studying hybrid rice. He worked in fields, observed plants carefully and tried again after many failures. His work helped farmers produce more food on limited land and provided a practical solution to hunger in many places. The other story is about a medical researcher who searched old medical books, tested many methods and worked with her team to find a useful treatment for malaria. Their discovery helped save a great number of lives.
These stories are not only about prizes or famous names. They show a similar path: finding a real problem, making great efforts, respecting facts and never stopping after failure. Scientific work may sound far from students’ lives, but the spirit behind it is close to everyone. When students repair a machine again and again in a training room, when they record data carefully in a nursing class, or when they practise a service skill until it becomes reliable, they are using the same attitude.
Young people do not need to become famous before they make contributions. They can begin with small tasks: learning a skill well, helping a classmate, protecting public things and keeping promises. A society needs great scientists, but it also needs ordinary people who work responsibly. That is why role models of the times are valuable. They remind us that achievement grows from love, patience and long-term action.
46.Which information about the rice scientist is mentioned?
A.He opened a hospital for young students.
B.He designed machines for city traffic.
C.He wrote stories about school life.
D.He helped produce more food on limited land.
47.What did the medical researcher and her team do?
A.They built new houses for farmers.
B.They found a useful treatment for malaria.
C.They trained volleyball players abroad.
D.They created a school safety video.
48.What can we infer from Paragraph 2?
A.Students can learn scientific spirit in practical training.
B.Scientific work has nothing to do with vocational students.
C.Only famous people need to respect facts.
D.Failures should make young people stop trying.
49.What does the underlined word “reliable” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.Expensive. B.Noisy.
C.Dependable. D.Private.
50.Which is the best title for the text?
A.How to Win More Prizes
B.The Spirit Behind Great Contributions
C.The History of School Training
D.Why Students Should Read Old Books

Last term, our class started a project called “A Role Model Around Me”. At first, I thought role models must be famous people on television. Then our teacher asked us to look carefully at ordinary people in our school. I began to notice Mr. Zhao, the old worker who repaired desks, watered flowers and opened the gate every morning. He was not tall or strong, but he always smiled at students and did small things with great patience. One rainy day, I saw him standing ____21____ the school gate with a large umbrella. He helped younger students cross the wet road safely before he went back to his room.
A week later, I interviewed him for the project. He told me that he had worked in the school for more than twenty years. “A clean and safe school can help students learn better,” he said. His words made me ____22____ of my idea about role models. I realized that respect does not only come from prizes. It also comes from ____23____ work and a warm heart. A
A role model is not always a person who stands on a large stage or appears in the news.

A.He opened a hospital for young students.
