two different camps:the Forest Camp and the Lakeside Outpost.Started in March 2011,this place offers deep
nature experiences and survival skills learning.Online pictures show boating and evening campfires, but the
real fun is being there yourself-like listening to wild birds over the water or learning to make a simple
shelter in the woods.
The Forest Camp and Lakeside Outpost are 2 km away from each other.Forest Camp has small wooden
houses with simple beds, while Lakeside has tents and outdoor sleeping areas. The base welcomes groups of
15-60 students and other guests for activities such as river trips, rock climbing, and night walks.Choices
include shared ooms, private tents,or group sleeping areas.Basic tools and safety instructions are provided.

In Hazelwood,a group called Seedlings for Tomorrow gives every child three plants to grow in
their own garden.Unlike a public park, these plants are theirs to keep forever.Kids"check out"at the city's
greenhouse not with money, but by joining the group's Garden Buddy project. This project pairs each young
gardener with an adult guide. They have a45-minute yirtual meeting each week to learn about gardening and
nature."Every kid should feel the joy of growing something with their own hands,"said Orson Pike, the
project director.
Orson started the non-profit organization Seedlings for Tomorrow in 2022.Soon he realized that just
giving away plants wasn't enough."Some groups think dropping off bupplies is helping. But if people don't
know how to use them,it's like giving them a stone,"he explained. That's why the program focuses on
teaching skills-like how to water plants properly, what seasons are best for planting, and how to protect
flowers from msects At the greenhouse, children can pick from sunflowers, strawberries, lavender, and even
small vegetable kits. There are guidebooks in both English and Welsh.
Orson is already 70,but he's always been enthusiastic about the growth of the next generation. He
believes that by letting kids choose what they love, they'll grow into passionate gardeners. Many kids even
share their progress with classmates, making gardening a social activity.
To attract more families,Seedlings for Tomorrow visits local primary schools and community centers.
Orson also hopes to build small green stations around town where people can exchange seeds and gardening
tips. The project has received $20,000 from the UK-based Ecology Fund. The fund manager Elara Vane said,
"Such programs are essential-they teach patience, responsibility and love for the environment, which helps
kids both in and out of school,"adding that parents have noticed their children becoming more confident since
joining the project.

Scientists from the University of Florida have recently reported on the world's largest nesting site for
freshwater turtles(海龟).
Giant South American River Turtles are large turtles that live in rivers in South America. They get their
name from the size of the adults, which can weigh over 135 pounds. These turtles are imperiled since they
have to face people engaged in unlawful hunting of them for the sale of their meat and eggs, and the loss of
their habitats. In July and August each year, female turtles gather in large numbers to nest in the sandbanks of
the Guapore River.
Scientists use drones()to count turtles by taking pictures from above, which are combined into a
large, detailed image called orthomosaic.Counting the animals shown in an orthomosaic disturbs the animals
less than having researchers walk through the area. However, the turtles often move around,so some may be
counted more than once.Scientists marked1,187 gathering turtles,did 4 daily full-coverage drone surveys
(1,500 images each)forl2 days.Studying the marked turtles revealed 20%of walking turtles repeated in
images. Then they built a mathematical model based on the new orthomosaic analysis to accurately estimate
the sandbank's turtle population.
Ground observers counted roughly 16,000 turtles.Orthomosaic reviewers (not accounting for animal
movement or markings)counted about 79,000.With the new statistical models applied, the site's turtle
population was estimated at around 41,000."These numbers vary greatly-a problem for conservationists,"
UF researcher Ismael:Brack said."If scientists are unable to establish a precise count of individuals of a
species, how will they know if the population is in decline or the protection works?"
The team plans to spend more to perfect their monitoring methods by.conducting more drone flights.
They.detail ways to adapt and apply this technique to conservation efforts with other species that are
monitored and surveyed using drone-obtained orthomosaics."By combining information from multiple
surveys,we can detect population trends, and we'll know where to invest in conservation actions,"Brack said.
28.What does the underlined word"imperiled"in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Threatened.
B.Appreciated.
C.Blamed.
D.Identified.
29.What is the disadvantage of the previous orthomosaic?
A.It produced unclear images.
B.It caused a double count.
C.It required too much time.
D.It disturbed the turtles greatly.
30.What does Brack emphasize in paragraph 4?
A.The importance of accurate figures.
B.The problem caused by varied data
C.The failure of protection efforts.
D.The equipment needed for observers.
31.What do the scientists think of their mathematical model?
A.It's quite trendy
B.It's easy to operate.
C.It's too expensive.
D.It's worth promoting.

Dreams, according to Carl Jung, reveal a certain amount ofreality hidden during waking consciousness.
in Jungian philosophy, the conflict and chaos experienced in dreams finally bring orden to our lives. While
Jung's mystical theories are debatable,he was not mistaken about the importance of dreaming.A growing
number of reports show that a continuous lack of dreaming is damaging our waking hours in many ways.
This trend is causing damage to our immune and metabolic(新陈代谢的)systems, let alone the
electronic products that keep us up late at night are ruining our sleep patters, which has long-term
consequences on our memory system. One study showed that not allowing mice to have adequate amounts of
REM(Rapid Eye Movement)sleep, the stage in which we dream, the mice couldn't strengthen memories
You might think this is just a sleep problem, but dreaming is inseparable from our.nighttime rest.We
sleep in cycles, each lasting about 90minutes;in a sleep cycle,we go through non-REM sleep before hitting
REM.As the night progresses,REM sleep periods increase in length while deep sleep(one of the stages of
non-REM sleep)decreases. The longer we sleep, the more time we spend in REM,which is why we are often
dreaming when waking up in the morning. If we sleep less than seven hours, however,it becomes harder to
achieve this level of REM.
The combination of sleeping and dreaming acts as an emotional stabilizer. We recover from emotional
hurt faster when we sleep and dream properly. However,we're not getting enough sleep to cycle through the
stages to take advantage of this natural circadian anti-depressant ()--dreams.Instead,we get
depressed and turn to alcohol or medicines to get to sleep, which only makes things worse because even one
drink leads to late REM while anti-depressants promote deep sleep at the expense of REM.
We're paying for this lack of dreaming in many ways. For example,a 2021 study stated that compared
with quiet rest and non-REM sleep,REM promoted the formation of associative networks and the integration
of unassociated information.Volunteers that experienced more REM sleep were better equipped for solving
problems requiring creative solutions.
Rowan Hooper, the managing editor at New Scientist, writes that dreams that include an"emotional core"
appear to be a main function of REM sleep and that we should look at sleep patterns as seriously as we do diet
and exercise habits
32.What's Carl Jung's view about dreams?
A.They cause chaos.
B.They damage immunity.
C.They reveal secrets.
D.They mirror reality.
33.Why is the sleep process explained in paragraph 3?
A.To show a dream mainly occurs during REM sleep.
B.To prove the minimum sleep time should be seven hours.
C.To prove dream problems and sleep problems are attached.
D.To show people often dream when waking up in the morning.
34.What conclusion can be inferred from paragraph 5?
A.REM sleep promotes creativity.
B REM sleep helps fight depression.
C.The brain still receives new information during REM sleep.
D.The brain is paying the price for having more non-REM sleep.
35.What's the main idea of the passage?
A.The importance of sleep lies in dreams.
B.The absence of dreams is terrible for us.
C Dreaming patterns are more important than we realize.
D.Dreaming has mystical power of strengthening memories.

When I was fifteen,I lived with my family in a small town.My father's profession was such a job that
the whole family had to shift frequently from one place to another. My mother was a housewife and my sister
was an artist.Due to my father's transfer()after every 3-4 years,my school life was terrible.I had to
start my new life in new schools and make new friends.Because of this,I always felt lonely.
One Friday afternoon,I went with my friend Rocky to his home.As soon as the door opened,a pet dog
jumped on Rocky and started licking his face.I asked Rocky,"Why is your pet doing this?"Rocky replied,
"My doggy loves me so much. This is the way he shows his love.Animals can't speak, but they too have
feelings."His reply was so touching that it made me think about keeping a pet dog.
After going back home,I shared the whole incident with my mother and sister and expressed my desire.
My mother said,"It is up to you,but if you keep a dog,it will be entirely your responsibility to look after it."
My sister thought it wonderful to have a pet dog in the house, and she supported me.Now the real task for me
was my father. We were pure vegetarians, and my father knew that animals needed non-vegetarian food for
proper nutrition and growth. Therefore,my father was strictly against having a pet.
That evening when my father came back home,I asked him for a pet dog. After listening to my request,
he said a clear no.Several days later, while I was walking in a park near my house,I saw a homeless puppy
who was in pain because of an injured ear.He looked weak and sad.Out of pity,I decided to take the little
dog home.
