Sydney Peterson has been fond of skiing since she was five,cross-country skiing since her
early childhood. But when she was 13,she started experiencing symptoms of what would
eventually be diagnosed as dystonia,a condition that caused involuntary muscle contractions(
in Peterson's left arm and leg due to faulty signals sent from the brain.
However, that didn't block her from skiing. She competed on her high school team, training
intensively and participating in national competitions. When she was formally diagnosed with
dystonia at 19,she turned to Paralympic competition instead. Now,she skis with one pole and a
custom left ankle brace to assist her to ski across the snow. Her left arm and leg are partially
paralyzed(),though a brain surgery has helped slow down the progression of her condition.
In 2022,Peterson won three medals at the World Para Snow Sports Championships and merely
two months later, brought home three medals from Beijing Paralympic Games. Then in March
2026,she competed again in the Paralympic Games in Milan Cortina, but winning another medal
wasn't the only thing on her mind.Aside from being a skier on the US Paralympic team,Peterson
is working towards her PhD at the University of Utah, where she studies neuroscience-specifically
movement disorders similar to her own condition.
Peterson's disorder can't be cured, though treatments and interventions like brain surgery have
helped her manage her condition. Her other goal now is to help others."It definitely fueled my
interest in science,"she said."I wanted to learn about what was happening to myself, and I
wanted to try and see if I could help others.
"Living with dystonia can feel like your body is just constantly betraying you,so it feels like
you can never put a plan in place, which is tough, she told. But for now,she has her eyes on the
next race."If you're passionate about something, don't avoid it just because it seems challenging,"
she added.
24.What can be learned about Peterson's experience with skiing?
A.She was physically defeated.
B.She began skiing at a young age.
C.She once had to give skiing up.
D.She found skiing relatively easy.
25.What caused Peterson to join in Paralympic competition?
A.Her doctor's strong advice.
B.Her failure in school races.
C.The worsening of her illness.
D.The withdrawal of her partner.
26.How is Peterson's current life?
A.She balances sports and study.
B.She keeps focused on research.
C.She skies less after the surgery.
D.She takes time to help others.
27.What message does Peterson want to convey in the last paragraph?
A.Schedules ought to be flexible.
B.Success comes from hard work.
C.Stay enthusiastic when challenged.
D.Keep determined when in difficulty.

Nowadays robots are able to do many things for humans, and recently researchers have even
invented a smart spray paint can()that robotically reproduces photographs as large-scale
murals(壁画).
The computerized technique, which basically spray-paints a photo, isn't likely to create super-
huge murals, but it can be used in digital art.Spray paint is affordable and easy to use.But
covering walls of buildings and other large surfaces can be technically difficult even for skilled
artists. The researchers wanted to create a way to help non-artists create reproductions of
photographs as murals using spray painting. So,they developed a computer system.
As the user waves the pre-programmed spray can,the system automatically hits the spray on/
off button to reproduce the specific image as a spray painting.Paint instructions are sent through
radio directly connected to the spray nozzle().A nearby computer decides the amount of paint
of each color to spray in real time. The result is that the painting appears itself as the user waves
the can around, without the user necessarily needing to know the picture in advance.

Due to difficulty getting permission to spray paint buildings, the researchers tested the
automated painting system on large sheets of paper. While the current testing of the method
focused on flat surfaces, researchers have pointed out a real benefit of the new technique over
standard printing:its usability on more complicated painting surfaces, including soft surfaces.
"In this research,we can bring assistance technology to the physical world even for this very
traditional painting technique,"says co-author Michael Brown,an assistant professor of computer
science."We hope our assistive approach could be a modern version of 'paint by numbers'for
spray painting and enable unskilled users to create a physical piece of art.
28.What is the smart spray paint can mainly used to do?
A.Create murals from photographs.
B.Remove large murals on buildings.
C.Paint digital murals on computers.
D.Help artists improve painting skills.
29.What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about concerning the new technique?
A.Why it matters.
B.How it works.
C.Its target users.
D.Its future application.
30.What advantage does the new technique have over standard printing?
A.It is more affordable to use.
B.It has better safety standards.
C.It can be used on complex surfaces.
D.It can be run by a personal computer.
31.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.The technique will replace traditional spray painting.
B.The technique will transform the digital art industry.
图点·
C.The technique will let more people enjoy artistic creation.
D.The technique will boost the development of art education.

Scientists have discovered that young ants who become seriously ill will send out a selfless "kill
me"signal to the worker ants who attend to them. The new findings, described in the journal
Nature Communications, add to a growing understanding of the complex ways these highly social
animals try to keep deadly infectious diseases under control.
With so many insects packed together in wet and dark places.sharing the same genetic
vulnerability, infections and diseases can quickly pose an enormous threat to the well-being of an
ant colony().To manage these risks,in some species, ants restructure their nests to slow the
spread of a deadly disease and in others, ant queens eat infected pupae()to prevent the spread of
disease, and sick adult ants will leave the colony to avoid infecting their nest-mates.
Years ago,Sylvia Cremer, the report's senior author from the Institute of Science and
Technology Austria,discovered a phenomenon called“destructive disinfection(a破坏性消毒)”.
When a young ant is seriously ill,an adult worker ant will apply a self-produced disinfectant to kill
it."Interestingly, this also occurs at the time when the pupa isn't infectious, because it'll become
infectious if it isn't treated,"Cremer says.
To find out whether the destructive disinfection was a passive behavior or an active one,
Cremer's team studied the invasive garden ant species Lasius neglectus. When the team left the
infected young ant by itself, there was no signal. It was only when they put in adult worker ants
that could disinfect and kill the infected young ant that the young ant sent out the signal, which
comes in the form of a smell. Moreover, they also found that young queens don't send out the "kill
me"signal because the young queens can fight off infection.
To prove this was a causal relationship,Cremer and her team transferred the smell the sick
young ants produced to a healthy young ant, which they then put together with an adult worker
ant.The scientists found that even though the young ant was perfectly healthy, the worker ant
started attacking the young ant, proving the smell was the active call to action.

walked beside him,her face tired but gentle. As they passed the main entrance, the boy grabbed
her mother's hand and said,"Mom,do you think Daddy will like the balloon?I picked blue because
it's his favorite."The mother smiled and smoothed his son's hair."He'll love it,sweetheart.Blue
always makes him think of the ocean."The boy seemed to understand and started skipping,
making the balloon move up and down happily in the air.
I was about to walk out when I heard the boy ask,"Mom,is Daddy's surgery over yet?"The
mother nodded."Yes,honey.The doctor said he did great. He's just sleeping now."The boy's
eyes lit up.
"So we can go and see him now?Can I'show him the balloon?"His mother laughed softly."Of
course. But remember,he's very sleepy,so we have to be quiet."The boy pressed his finger to his
lips and whispered,"Shh.Got it."Then he added,"Mom,can I tell him a joke?A funny one.It
will help him wake up faster.”His mother chuckled(轻声低笑).“Okay, one joke. But a quiet
one."The boy nodded seriously, leaned toward the balloon, and whispered something to it as if the
balloon would carry the message.
