On the evening of August 16, 2025, doctoral (博士) student Pang Zhongwang from Tsinghua University was named a “Touching China” 2024 Awardee. His story, from a young man who overcame hardships to an inspiring figure, has warmed and encouraged countless hearts.
Born into poverty, Pang faced great challenges: his father has schizophrenia (精神分裂症), and his mother, born with spina bifida (脊柱裂) and with amputated (截肢的) legs, can barely move. He himself fought congenital (先天的) heart disease, went door-to-door borrowing money for his mother’s treatment, and collected scrap (废品) to help pay the family’s debts (债务). Yet, he remained positive (乐观的), holding onto the belief that “knowledge changes fate”.
In 2017, Pang entered Tsinghua’s Department of Precision Instruments with a high score. At first, he feared being a disappointment, but he found his path in research, keeping on working hard through numerous failures. He refused donations (捐款), relying instead on school grants (助学金). His mother, who named him “Zhongwang” (meaning “the hope of all”), taught him always to look forward. “Mom smiles every day, so why should I feel sad?” he once said.
Sadly, his mother passed away in 2020, just before he got the chance to pursue a doctorate at Tsinghua. Now, he has published SCI papers, aiming to serve the country through scientific research—a mission he wholeheartedly holds. He has even helped a girl turn to her favorite major, showing how his own story inspires and lights the way for others.
As the award speech says: “You leave hardships behind, face life with a smile, and move forward with strength.” Pang’s journey shows us that with resilience and hope, we can all live up to expectations and create our own brilliance.
36. What can we learn about Pang Zhongwang’s family background from the passage?
A. His mother was disabled due to a traffic accident.
B. His father couldn’t work normally because of a mental illness.
C. He was the only child in a wealthy family.

A. To earn money for his own college tuition.
B. To help his family pay off debts.
C. To buy medicine for his congenital heart disease.
D. To support his mother’s daily shopping.
38. Which of the following shows Pang Zhongwang’s positive attitude towards life?
A. He feared being a disappointment when entering Tsinghua.
B. He declined donations and relied on grants and scholarships.
C. He once said, “Mom smiles every day, so why should I feel sad?”
D. He helped a girl switch to her favorite major.
39. When did Pang Zhongwang’s mother pass away?

Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge (花江峡谷大桥) in Guizhou Province, the world’s tallest bridge, has officially opened. Workers lifted the final 215-ton steel piece (钢结构) into place, completing the main structure of the bridge. This “sky-high” project opened to traffic on September 28th, 2025.
Started in 2022, the bridge stretches 1,420 meters across a deep river canyon. Its highest point reaches 625 meters above the Beipan River—nearly the height of the Shanghai Tower, China’s tallest building. It now holds two world records: the tallest bridge and the longest span (跨度) of any mountain bridge.
Why was such an extreme bridge built? Guizhou’s mountainous and rugged terrain (崎岖的地形) makes transportation challenging. The bridge is part of a new highway that cut travel time across the canyon from around one hour to just two minutes! It is also expected to boost tourism to nearby attractions such as the famous Huangguoshu Waterfall.
“The completion of the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge will strengthen economic (经济) ties among Guiyang, Anshun, and Qianxinan, fostering (促进) regional economic integration (融合),” said Chen Jianfei, deputy director of the Guizhou Transport Department. Li Zhao, chief engineer of the project, expressed his pride: “Seeing my work become something real—watching the bridge grow day by day and finally, stand above the canyon gives me an incredible sense of achievement.”
However, it wasn’t easy to build it. Steel pieces weighed 22,000 tons, as much as 3 Eiffel Towers. Crazy winds and sudden weather changes in the canyon made it face more difficulties. Engineers used smart solutions, like a homegrown (国产的) cable crane (起重机) system guided by China’s Beidou satellites. This system could lift heavy parts with millimeter precision (毫米精度).
47. When did the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge start?
A. In 2022. B. On September 28th, 2025.
C. In early 2025. D. The passage doesn’t mention.
48. Why was the bridge built in Guizhou Province?
A. To create a new tourist attraction. B. To replace the Shanghai Tower.
C. To make travel easier. D. To compete with the Eiffel Tower.
49. What caused more difficulties?
A. Guizhou’s mountainous and rugged terrain.
B. The deep river canyon.
C. Crazy winds and sudden weather changes.
D. The tallest bridge and the longest span.
50. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To tell us the high cost of building bridges.
B. To attract more people to travel to Guizhou.
C. To compare the engineering abilities of China and France.
D. To show China’s engineering achievements through a bridge project.

Dear Laura,
[1] Thanks for your message. Yes, I’m having a great time on my student exchange program in France. I was a bit nervous before I arrived here, but there was no reason to be. My host family is really nice. They go out of their way to make me feel at home. The grandmother knows that I miss Chinese food a lot. So she actually learned how to make Chinese food! Her granddaughter who is about my age is really kind, too. She always talks to me in French to help me practice. You wouldn’t believe how quickly my French has improved because of that. I’m very comfortable speaking French now. I still make lots of mistakes, but I’m not as ① about it as I used to.
[2] I have to learn how to behave at the dinner table, which is my biggest challenge. As you can imagine, things are very different from the way they are at home. For example, you’re not supposed to put your bread on your plate. You’re supposed to put it on the table! I thought that was pretty strange at first, but now I’m used to it. Another example is that you’re supposed to eat ② with your hands except for bread, not even fruit. You have to cut it up and eat it with a fork. Another thing is that it is impolite to say you’re full. If you don’t want any more food, you should just say, “That was delicious.” Also, you’re not supposed to put your elbows on the table. I have to say that ③ I find it difficult to remember everything, I’m gradually getting used to it. I don’t find French customs so strange anymore.
[3] I’ll write again soon and tell you more about my life in France. Hope you’re having a good school year.
Yours,
Lin Yue

In recent days, more and more foreign visitors have come to China because of the new visa-free transit policy.
In my opinion, it is an excellent policy. Foreign tourists can enjoy China’s sights, experience our modern technology and feel how friendly Chinese people are. They will share their experiences online and help raise China’s international influence.
They will surely have a great trip here. We have beautiful places, nice food and great traditional culture. Mobile payment makes traveling easy, and they will feel very safe in China.
As hosts, we should welcome foreigners warmly, offer them help when they need it and introduce our special cultures to them.
