A
Last spring, our English teacher Ms. Li put forward a new class task: build a small volunteer team to help people living in our community. At first, most of us felt confused. We didn’t believe teenagers could offer useful help to adults.
We held a 40-minute class meeting to discuss possible volunteer jobs, and finally made three clear groups. The first group would visit the nursing home every Friday afternoon, chatting with the lonely old people and helping them wash clothes. The second group planned to set up a book sharing shelf at the community entrance, collecting used storybooks for poor primary students in mountain villages. My deskmate and I joined the third group, whose job was tutoring children of migrant workers in English every Saturday morning.
At the beginning of our book-sharing plan, almost no neighbors gave us books. We drew colorful hand-made posters and visited every house to explain our purpose. Gradually, residents started sending us all kinds of books: kids’ fairy tales, science magazines, history biographies and English readers. After one month, we collected more than 460 books. We wrapped each book neatly and mailed the whole box to a primary school in Guizhou Province.
Two weeks later, we received a handwritten letter from that school. A Grade Seven student wrote, “I have never read such wonderful storybooks before. Your books open a bright new world for me.” Reading the warm words, every member of our team felt full of pride and joy.
Ms. Li told us after the activity, “Volunteering never needs great power or much money. Tiny kindness can warm other people’s whole life.” This meaningful activity taught me that giving always brings more happiness than receiving. I decide to keep taking part in volunteer activities during my holiday in the future.
21. What’s the main task Ms. Li gave to the class?
A. Write letters to mountain students.
B. Set up volunteer groups for community help.
C. Collect old books for school library.
D. Visit nursing home every Friday.
22. How many volunteer groups did the students divide into?
A. Two. B. Three. C. Four. D. Five.
23. What was the writer’s group’s work?
A. Tutor migrant kids’ English.
B. Clean rooms for old people.
C. Collect books for poor children.
D. Make posters for community.
24. Why did they make posters and visit neighbors door to door?
A. To ask for book donations.
B. To invite neighbors to join volunteers.
C. To sell old books for mountain schools.
D. To share books with local kids.
25. What lesson can we learn from the passage?
A. Teenagers can only finish easy volunteer jobs.
B. Small kind acts can create great warmth.
C. Students received books from mountain villages.
D. The volunteer activity lasted for two months.
B
Nowadays, most Grade Eight students spend most of their free time watching short video apps on mobile phones, while the time they spend reading paper books drops sharply. A city education research group did a survey among 1,200 middle school students last month, and the result showed that only 16% of the tested students keep reading paper books for more than 30 minutes every single day.
Paper book reading has many special advantages that short videos cannot provide. First of all, reading long articles can train your concentration ability. When you watch short videos, each clip lasts less than two minutes, your brain gets used to fast story changes and loses patience for slow, deep reading. If you keep reading books every day, you will find it easier to focus on your textbook during class.
Secondly, paper reading improves your writing skills. Books have complete plots, beautiful sentences and logical paragraph structures. When you read widely, you can remember good expressions naturally and use them in your compositions. However, short videos only carry simple spoken language, which cannot help you improve formal writing.
Third, reading books protects your eyesight better. Mobile screens send blue light, which hurts your eyes after long-time watching. If you read paper books under soft light, the eye tiredness will be much lighter.
Many students say they have no time for reading because of heavy homework. In fact, you can use small pieces of free time: 10 minutes after breakfast, 15 minutes before sleeping. A little reading every day will make a big difference to your study and mind.
26. What’s the survey result about?
A. Students’ favorite short videos.
B. Middle school students’ paper reading time.
C. Teenagers’ mobile phone using rules.
D. Students’ after-school hobby choices.
27. How many students read paper books over 30 minutes every day in the survey?
A. 16 out of 100. B. 30 out of 100. C. 1,200 students. D. Most students.
28. Which is NOT the advantage of reading paper books?
A. Improve concentration.
B. Help writing skills.
C. Protect eyesight.
D. Save much free time.
29. Why do short videos weaken students’ concentration?
A. They use difficult formal words.
B. Their stories change too fast.
C. They send strong blue light.
D. They take up all homework time.
30. What suggestion does the writer give to students?
A. Stop using mobile phones completely.
B. Read paper books in small free time.
C. Watch short videos only on weekends.
D. Finish homework before reading books.
C
Mike is a 15-year-old Grade Eight student who loves mountain climbing very much. He started this hobby three years ago, when his father took him to climb a small hill near their town. At first, Mike felt tired halfway and wanted to give up, but his father told him, “The most beautiful view always waits for people who stick to the end.” These words changed Mike’s mind, and he reached the top at last.
From that day, Mike fell in love with climbing. Every weekend, he practices climbing different hills with his father. He also reads lots of books about mountain safety and learns how to take care of himself in wild mountains. Last summer vacation, he joined a mountain climbing club and met many teenagers who share the same hobby.
Last month, Mike took part in a city middle school mountain climbing competition. The mountain road was wet and slippery after rain. Many players fell down and gave up halfway. Mike’s legs also got hurt, but he remembered his father’s words and kept moving slowly. Two hours later, he stood on the top of the mountain and won the second prize.
Mike says climbing teaches him valuable life lessons. When he meets difficult math problems or heavy study pressure, he will think of mountain roads. Many people throw away plastic bottles every day, but few of them know that plastic takes hundreds of years to break down in the earth. It brings serious pollution to soil, rivers and sea water. Now a group of college students created a creative way to reuse plastic bottles: build small green houses for community flower gardens.
The steps of making bottle greenhouses are simple. First, collect clean empty plastic bottles and cut off their bottom parts. Second, stick the bottle bodies together with strong glue to make walls. Third, put a transparent plastic sheet on top as the roof to keep warm inside. The small houses can keep flowers away from strong wind and low temperature in cold spring days.
The college students taught local primary school students how to build these bottle houses last month. Kids brought their used plastic bottles from home and made small green houses together in the school garden. After finishing, they planted sunflowers and roses inside the houses. Now all flowers grow tall and bloom beautifully.
This activity spreads two important ideas to teenagers. First, waste can be reused if we use our creativity. Second, small daily actions can protect our environment. The students hope more schools and families can start similar reuse activities to cut down plastic waste.
36. How long does plastic take to break down in nature?
A. A few months. B. Several years.
C. Hundreds of years. D. Thousands of years.
37. What do the college students make with plastic bottles?
A. Small flower green houses.
B. Water boxes for gardens.
C. Waste storage bins.
D. Student desks for schools.
38. Which step is the second when building the green house?
A. Cut the bottom of bottles off.
B. Stick bottle bodies to make walls.
C. Cover the top with plastic sheet.
D. Plant flowers inside the houses.
39. What can the bottle green houses do for flowers?
A. Provide enough sunlight all day.
B. Keep flowers safe from wind and cold.
C. Give enough water to plants.
D. Help flowers grow faster in summer.
40. What’s the main idea of the passage?
A. College students teach kids to plant sunflowers.
B. Plastic waste pollutes rivers and soil seriously.
C. Creative reuse of plastic bottles helps protect environment.
D. Schools should build big gardens for students.
