When I first arrived in Qingdao in 2015, I felt both excited and nervous. As a student from Pakistan, everything was new to me. The modern life, historical buildings, and beautiful beaches all amazed me.
At first, communication was difficult for me. I could only speak a few basic phrases in Chinese, so I depended on gestures and translation apps (翻译应用程序). However, I felt happy when I successfully ordered food at a noodle shop and made my first Chinese friend who taught me to say “man man lai” take it easy.
After getting my master’s degree (硕士学位) at the Ocean University of China, I moved to Wuhan University to continue my studies. Moving to Wuhan was like stepping into a quite different part of China. During my time there, I made friends from around the world and experienced different cultures.
Today, I am in Dalian, working at a university. This city’s beautiful beaches make me think of Qingdao, where I first began to understand China.
Living in China for nearly ten years has made me experience the country’s rapid development. High-speed trains, QR codes, and e-wallets have all become parts of daily life. I really enjoy my time here. China is not just a country to me. It’s my second home.
31. When first arriving in Qingdao, the writer had difficulty in _________.

A. Enjoyable and meaningful. B. Lonely and quiet.

34. What writing style does the writer use in the passage?
A. By space order. B. By time order. C. By cause and effect. D. By listing numbers.
35. What is the purpose of the passage?

C. To introduce famous universities in China. D. To give advice on living and working in China.

Desertification (沙漠化) is a big problem in some parts of China, but people have found many ways to fight it. Here are some methods Chinese people use to control deserts and turn them into green land.
First, planting trees and grass is the most common way. Their roots help hold the soil together and stop the sand from moving. For example, the “Great Green Wall” project in northern China has planted millions of trees to stop the spread of deserts. Grass is also planted to cover the sand and prevent the wind.
Second, using straw checkerboards (草方格) is a smart idea. People lay straw in square patterns (图案) on the sand. These squares break the wind and keep the sand from spreading. Over time, plants can grow inside these squares, making the land greener.
Third, building sand barriers (障碍) helps prevent the wind. These barriers reduce wind speed and protect nearby farmland and villages from sandstorms.
Another method is water-saving technology. In dry areas, people use drip irrigation (滴灌) to water plants. Drip irrigation, for example, sends water directly to plant roots, reducing waste. This helps plants grow even in very dry conditions.
Finally, education plays an important role. The government has made rules to protect the environment, and schools teach students why it’s important to stop desertification.
Thanks to these efforts, many deserts in China have become greener.
36. What is the main idea of the second paragraph?
A. Planting trees and grass helps prevent sand from moving.
B. Planting grass is more important than planting trees.
C. All kinds of grass can grow in deserts.
D. The “Great Green Wall” project has already planted hundreds of trees.
37. How do straw checkerboards help fight desertification?
A. They collect water from the air.
B. They provide food for animals in the desert.
C. They stop the wind and keep sand from moving.
D. They make the desert look very beautiful.
38. What does the underlined word “This” in paragraph 5 refer to?
A. Sending water directly to plant roots. B. Reducing waste.
C. The sand barrier. D. The straw checkerboard.
39. What can we infer from the text?
A. Using straw checkerboards is the best way to stop sand.
B. Education can solve desertification completely.
C. Drip irrigation wastes plenty of water.
D. Without human efforts, deserts will keep spreading.
40. Which would be the best title for this text?
A. The problems of deserts in China B. How China fights desertification
C. The best way to plant trees in deserts D. Sandstorms in northern China
D
Everyone knows that forests help fight climate change. However, a recent scientific report shows that the world lost 300,000 square kilometers of forests in 2024. That’s an area about the size of Italy.
According to the report, for the first time ever, fires were the biggest cause of forest loss. Take Brazil for example. This country has the largest area of rainforest in the world. Last year, it suffered from a long period of dry weather. Wildfires broke out and spread. As a result, about 24,000 square kilometers of the primary rainforest disappeared in the country. This meant fires caused about 60% of its forest loss.
The second biggest cause of the world’s forest loss was clearing land for farming. As the people need more farmland, they keep cutting down forests every year. In 2024, the area of forest cleared for farming increased by 14% worldwide. The situation was more severe in developing countries. For example, Bolivia’s forest loss doubled in 2024.
Without doubt, something must be done. Experts call on governments, businesses and people to work together before it is too late. It seems that China has set a good example. Thanks to cooperation (合作) at many levels, China had the biggest increase in the forest area among all countries in 2024. That year alone, newly-planted trees in China covered an area of nearly 45,000 square kilometers, according to a news report. If more countries start to take action like China, the earth will become a greener planet.
41. The size of Italy is mentioned in Paragraph 1 to show ________.
A. why we need forests B. where a disaster spread
C. what climate change is D. how terrible forest loss was
42. What was the total amount (总量) of rainforest loss in Brazil in 2024?
A. 12,000 square kilometers. B. 24,000 square kilometers.
C. 40,000 square kilometers. D. 48,000 square kilometers
43. What does the underlined word “severe” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. serious B. boring. C. balanced D. positive.
44. What was the reason for the growth of China’s forest area in 2024?
A. Enough land. B. Nice weather. C. Good teamwork. D. Green technology.
45. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Rainforest Became Larger. B. Farmland Areas Grew Rapidly
C. Forest Fires Caused Pollution D. Forest Loss Worried the World

Forest Loss Worried the World
【答案】41. D 42. C 43. A 44. C 45. D

【41题详解】
原文第一段“the world lost 300,000 square kilometers of forests in 2024. That’s an area about the size of Italy.”,拿意大利国土面积作类比,是为直观体现森林流失的规模十分惊人。
【42题详解】
第二段句子“about24,000 square kilometers of the primary rainforest disappeared in the country”,2024年巴西消失的原始雨林面积为24000平方公里,24,000平方公里约占森林损失总量的60%。计算总量:24,000 ÷ 60% = 40,000平方公里。
【43题详解】
根据第三段划线词后句“For example, Bolivia's forest loss doubled in 2024.”可知,玻利维亚的森林损失翻倍,情况变得更糟糕。因此“severe”意为“严重的”,与serious同义。
【44题详解】
第四段 “Thanks to cooperation (合作) at many levels, China had the biggest increase in the forest area among all countries in 2024.”,多层级的协同合作(良好团队协作)是中国森林面积增长的原因。
