When I started Grade 7, I was taller than all the other students in the school and most of the teachers.
You may think it is cool to be tall, but I was never very athletic. Other kids could do things in sports that I just couldn’t do, like hitting or throwing a baseball. I was the world’s worst thrower.
In Grade 8, we got a new teacher. He took a look at me and said, “This school needs a basketball team and you are going to be the star!” I laughed, and my friends laughed even harder.
“Darlene doesn’t even know what a basketball is!” joked one of my friends. The new teacher said, “Don’t worry. I’ll show you what she can do.”
Every day after school, I practiced shooting with the new teacher. But after a few weeks, I had about five out of ten shots (投篮) landing in the basket. I still wasn’t very good. But I was so tall that if someone took a shot, I was usually the first one to reach the ball after it came down.
The season came and went. We didn’t do very well, but I learned something about myself. I’m in Grade 9 now and not good enough yet to make it to the high school team. But I think I will be next year. It’s exciting to discover something about yourself and to know that you are what you make of yourself.
62. What does the underlined word “athletic” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. 善于交际的 B. 乐于助人的 C. 善于运动的 D. 勤于思考的
63. Why did Darlene and her friends laugh?
A. Because the teacher told them a joke. B. Because the teacher understood them.
C. Because they were happy to see the teacher. D. Because they didn’t believe what the teacher said.
64. What is Paragraph 5 mainly about?
A. Darlene’s future plans. B. The progress Darlene made.
C. How Darlene’s friends helped her. D. How Darlene got interested in basketball.
65. What will Darlene probably do next year?
A. She will do well in shooting. B. She will become a great center.
C. She will be the star of her basketball team. D. She will be on the high school basketball team.
【答案】62. C 63. D 64. B 65. D

Richard Turere has always enjoyed making things using old objects. For example, when he was quite young, he made fans (风扇) for his parents’ house from car parts and things he found in the yard.
Richard lives near the Nairobi National Park in Kenya. It is home to rhinos, giraffes, lions and many other animals that live in Kenya.
When he was nine, Richard began to look after his family’s cows and sheep. The big problem was the lions. “I grew up hating lions,” says Richard. “They used to come at night and feed on our cows when we were sleeping.”
Then one night, as he was walking around the cowshed (牛棚) with a flashlight in his hand, he noticed the lions didn’t come that day. Richard realized that lions are scared of a moving light. So he had an idea. Using some used parts from a car and a motorcycle (摩托车), Richard set up some flashing lights to trick the lions into thinking that people were walking around the cowshed. The lions didn’t come near. Soon other families were using his “lion lights”.
They have not only helped the farmers but also the lions. Now, across Kenya, Richard’s idea has been used by farmers to protect their animals.
Richard has been accepted into one of Kenya’s top schools. “One year ago, I was just a boy looking after my father’s cows. Now I want to be an engineer or a pilot.”
66. What does the underlined word “They” in Paragraph 3 refer to (指的是)?

Philipp and Johannes are brothers in Germany. They invent funny things and make interesting videos on the Internet. The brothers became popular because of one of their recent videos. In the video, Philipp flew a bathtub (浴缸) to a local food store and bought a sandwich.
At the beginning of the video, Philipp climbed into the special bathtub. He wore a helmet and there was a camera on it to record everything. He used his remote control to let the bathtub rise into the air. After the bathtub took off, it crossed farm land and a small river. At last, it carried Philipp to the food store—Kopps Bakery. Philipp climbed out and went into the store to buy a sandwich. Although the flying bathtub was able to carry Philipp to the food store, it didn’t have enough power (力量) to carry him home again.
The brothers spent two months making the flying bathtub. They used drone (无人机) technology on it. “German laws (法律) allow us to do it as long as the bathtub flies below 98 feet (30 m),” the brothers said.
Johannes said, “Before the bathtub took off, people didn’t believe it could actually fly. When it flew away, they were so surprised. This is the world’s first flying bathtub. Some people even told us to start a company to sell those bathtub drones.”
69. What did Philipp do in the recent video?
A. He made friends with a wild animal. B. He flew a bathtub to buy a sandwich.

Brian’s family love fruits. They eat all kinds of fruits, but they had never tasted durians (榴莲) three years ago. One day Brian went to Malaysia on business. When the durian season came, the boss rented (租) a bus to take all the workers to the durian garden. He bought a big basket of durians for them. When Brian first tasted the fruit, it was terrible and the smell almost made him throw up (呕吐). The next year, as soon as the durian season came, they went to the durian garden again. Brian was still nervous, but he ate the fruit. It still smelled bad, but he was able to eat most of it. The third year, he actually liked the fruit and even enjoyed the taste. After he returned home, he introduced durians to his wife, kids, friends and relatives.
It just goes to show that sometimes you have to hold your nose, take a deep breath and go for it. That’s what Brian did, and he’s glad that he did. To him and his family, the durian is the king of fruits now.
