Robert Hooke was born in Freshwater,on England's Isle of Wight,on July 18,1635.He was a sickly
child in his early years, but he grew into a quick learner with great curiosity. He was fond of painting and
especially skilled at making delicate mechanical toys and after his father died in 1648,the 13-
year-old Hooke was sent to London to study painting under the famous artist Peter Lely, which cultivated
his sharp observation and practical thinking.
In 1653,Hooke entered Oxford's Christ Church College. There,he served as an assistant to the well-
known scientist Robert Boyle. He studied diverse subjects from astronomy to chemistry and made friends
with many talented people, including future famous architect Christopher Wren. With Boyle's support,
Hooke became the person in charge of experiments for the Royal Society of London in 1662.In 1665,he
accepted a position as a geometry professor at Gresham College, starting his steady academic career.
Hooke covered a wide variety of scientific topics, including comets, light motion, gravity and human
memory. He firmly stuck to the scientific method of experimentation and observation and made full use of
up-to-date instruments in his research.In 1665,he published Micrographia,documenting his
groundbreaking microscopic experiments. In 1678,he introduced Hooke's Law in his work, explaining that
the force needed to stretch or press a spring is proportional to its deformation distance.
However,Hooke's career was negatively affected by frequent arguments with outstanding scientists,
especially Isaac Newton.Continuous academic conflicts brought him much pressure and damaged his
reputation.Hooke died in London at the age of 67 on March 3,1703,leaving valuable scientific
achievements for future generations.

Ouaking aspens are the most common tree across North America.Interestingly,an aspen looks
like separate individual trees, but it is actually a group of genetically identical stems, growing from a shared
massive root system.White trunks shoot up from a large root system.A single aspen often covers less than
an acre, but sometimes more.Sometimes a tree is its own forest.
In south-central Utah, there stands a unique aspen wood with 47,000 trunks all connected to a root.
Known as Pando, this large living thing stretches across 106 acres. No single living thing on Earth is
heavier than it.Each trunk in Pando lives 85 to 130 years, and as each dies, new green shoots appear. But
now those shoots are being eaten by deer and cattle.
Paul Rogers,a professor at Utah State University, has studied Pando for years. In 2018,he made an
analysis of this forest. He found fewer trunks were regrowing than were dying.A new analysis in 2021
showed a greater increase of deaths. If we don't find better ways in coming decades to protect Pando from
animals, this unusual forest example will not exist.
Rogers has heard all the suggestions:using firecrackers,or shooting at deer with blanks,or forcing
them off with vehicles. But he doesn't consider those ideas useful. There could be money raised to do
large-scale fencing, but someone would also have to maintain it."Do we really want it fenced off like in a
zoo? That doesn't solve the root of the problem."he says.
But in another area on a nearby mountain,Stanley Kitchen,a scientist, sees reason for optimism. In
2015,a 10-year protection plan to save the aspen on that mountain appeared. There the scientist worked
with hunters, environmentalists, farmers, and officials. The plan included more hunting of deer if their
feeding on shoots continues to be a problem."It has not solved all the problems but it seems to be making a
difference.Aspens are struggling to grow again."he said.
28.What does the underlined word"identical"in paragraph 1 probably mean?
A.tall
B.same

A.It is effective and long-lasting.
B.It fails to solve the real problem.
C.It can perfectly protect young shoots.
D.It is money-saving and easy to do.
30.What can we infer about the 10-year plan?
A.It works well in all aspen forest areas.
B.It forbids all hunting activities in local areas.
C.It takes joint efforts of different groups of people.
D.It has completely solved Pando's survival problems.
31.What is the main idea of the text?
A.Ways to balance feeding and tree survival.
B.The amazing living habits of quaking aspens.
C.Views on protecting endangered local forests.
D.The danger Pando facing and efforts to save it.

Many people wonder what sets top performers apart from ordinary ones.36
Stay driven from inside
I have found that scientists are not driven by such motivators:promotions, diplomas or awards.Ii
were, those I interviewed would have quit doing science after winning a Nobel Prize.Instead, many le
scientists are still doing research long after they qualify for retirement.37 They simply love the pr

There are always challenges on the way to success. Most people easily give up when facing
difficulties. However, the high achievers face them bravely and keep moving forward.Eventually, they fear
not trying more than they fear failing. They work hard to "control what they can control",and they don't
think over issues and challenges that are beyond their control.
Keep making progress
39 What worked for them early on in their careers is what they continue with later. The scientists
who have won a Nobel Prize are still designing experiments and writing papers to further their careers.
They refuse to stand still even with great honors. They stick to their effective methods and keep moving
toward higher goals.
Keep learning informally
Despite their advanced degrees and praise, the high achievers made a point of continuing their learning
by reading books, articles and blogs, watching videos and talking to others. They never think they have
learned enough and always stay hungry for new knowledge.40 In this way, they keep their knowledge
up-to-date and their creativity fresh.
No one aims to be average in life.People want to succeed but often lack the understanding of how to
achieve more.So learning from top scientists can guide us in our own life and work.
A.Persist and never give up.
B.Set up a strong foundation.
C.This book provides clear and practical answers.
D.High achievers do not rest on their achievements.
E.Reading widely is the only way to gain rich knowledge.
F.Their inner motivation keeps them devoted to their work.
G.They keep updating their knowledge and skills all the time.

ZZZt!Zzzt!Clink!Clink!Clink!
I listened from outside the door of Dad's lab, where he was occupied with a new experiment. No one
knew about his new task except me.He called the new invention,a small device on his ear,"bone-phone."
If he succeeded,it could send signals directly to his brain, allowing him to understand the messages plants
sent out.The idea reminded me of the angry shouting trees in The Wizard of Oz(《绿野仙踪》).
Dad always devoted himself to his research late into the night, long after my siblings and I had fallen
asleep. For him, science was more than just work-it was something he never gave up on easily. Many
people might think growing up with a scientist father was boring, but for me,it was mostly interesting and
full of inspiration.Whenever I turned to him for homework help,he never gave me answers directly.
Instead,he guided me to think on my own. When I met difficult problems,he always told me to keep trying
rather than give up at once. His attitude taught me to face challenges bravely.
But recently,I had been feeling discouraged.I'd been practicing for a school competition for weeks,
yet I kept making mistakes.Tired and frustrated,I was on the edge of giving up completely.Lost in my low
spirits,I fell asleep before I knew it.
"Ouch!"There was a sudden cry coming from Dad's lab.Worried that something had gone wrong,I
immediately jumped to my feet and rushed to the lab, pushing the door open.To my surprise, the first rays
of dawn were already shining through the window, which meant Dad had been working nonstop throughout
the whole night.

1.续写词数应为150左右;

"I did it!"he exclaimed excitedly.
I made up my mind to keep practicing for the competition.
