A man sat at a metro station in Washington D.C. and started to play the violin; it was a cold January morning. He played six pieces for about 45 minutes. During that time, since it was rush hour, 1,100 people went through the station, most of them on their way to work.
Three minutes went by, and a middle-aged man noticed there was musician playing. A few minutes later, someone leaned against the wall to listen to him. They stopped for a few seconds, and then hurried up to meet their schedule.
The one who paid the most attention was a 3-year-old boy. His mother followed him along, hurried, but the kid stopped to look at the violinist. Finally, the mother pushed hard, and the child continued to walk, turning his head all the time. This was repeated by several other children. All the parents, without exception, forced them to move on.
In the 45 minutes the musician played, only 6 people stopped and stayed for a while. About 20 gave him money, but continued to walk their normal pace. He collected $32. When he finished playing and silence took over, no one noticed it. No one applauded(鼓掌), nor was there any recognition.
No one knew this, but the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the most talented musicians in the world. He had just played one of the most beautiful pieces ever written, on a violin worth 3.5 million dollars.
Two days before his playing in the subway, Joshua Bell sold out at a theatre in Boston where the seats averaged $100.
This is a real story. Joshua Bell’s playing in the metro station was organized by the Washington Post as part of a social experiment.
One of the possible conclusions from this experience could be: If we do not have a moment to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world playing the best music ever written, how many other things are we missing?
4. Why did few people stop to listen to Joshua Bell playing?
A. People were in a hurry.
B. They were not interested in music.
C. It was too cold in the subway.
D. The performance was not good enough.
5. What did the parents do when children stopped to look at the violinist?
A. They would applaud for the performance.
B. They would urge them to continue walking.
C. They would stop to enjoy the music.
D. They would give him some money.
6. Why did Joshua Bell play in the metro station?
A. To make more money.
B. To practise his skills in playing music.
C. To made an advertisement for his concert.
D. To find out people’s reaction under such a circumstance.
7. What is the purpose of the passage?
A. To tell us the importance of music.
B. To show us how to play music.
C. To set us to think about our life.
D. To report a subway performance.
【答案】4. A 5. B 6. D 7. C

Ants have the ability to smell cancerous cells in humans, a new study has discovered, suggesting they could be used for cancer diagnosis in future. Researchers from the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) discovered that ant species Formica fusca has a well developed sense of smell. It was able to differentiate (区分) cancerous cells from healthy cells in humans, thanks to their sense of smell, limited trials revealed.
To conduct their research, the scientists performed tests with 36 ants, smelling cells under a laboratory setting. First, the specialists exposed the ants to the smell of a sample of cancerous human cells. This smell was then associated with a reward of sugar solution. In a second step, the researchers exposed the ants to two different smells. One was a new smell and the second was the smell of the cancerous cells. Once this test was successful, the researchers exposed the ants to different cancerous cells.
As such, the scientists found that ants discriminate between cancerous and healthy cells and between two cancerous lines. After training, Formica fusca ants are able to detect volatile organic compounds given off by cancerous cells. This first study shows that ants have high potential, are capable of learning very quickly, at lower cost, and are efficient, CNRS points out in a news release.
This isn’t the first time that scientists have used the animal sense of smell to locate cancerous cells. “Dogs’ noses are well suited for medical diagnosis. However, training them to do so requires several months to a year. Ants therefore represent a fast, efficient, inexpensive, and highly discriminant detection tool for detection of cancer cell volatiles,” the team explained, “our approach could potentially be adapted to a range of other complex smell detection tasks including the detection of narcotics, explosives, spoiled food, or other diseases.”
But more clinical tests must be carried out before they could be used in clinical settings like hospitals, the team said. They suggest that in future, ants could turn out to be better than dogs when it comes to locating cancerous cells in humans. Who knows? Let’s wait and see.
8. How does the author introduce the topic of ants’potential use in cancer diagnosis?
A. By comparing ants to dogs.
B. By presenting the results of a new study.
C. By describing the training process of ants.
D. By discussing the history of cancer diagnosis.
9. What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A. The process of the research. B. The reason of the research.
C. The limitation of the research. D. The conclusion of the research.
10. What can we infer about the use of ants in cancer diagnosis?
A. Ants have already been used in clinical settings.
B. Ants’ noses are more sensitive than dogs’ noses.
C. Ants may become a cost-effective diagnostic tool.
D. Ants will replace dogs in cancer detection entirely.
11. What is the author’s attitude towards the use of ants in cancer diagnosis?
A. Doubtful B. Negative C. Objective D. Indifferent.
【答案】8. B 9. A 10. C 11. C

D
The new stretchy (有弹性的) electronic skin, developed by researchers at The University of Texas at Austin, solves a major bottleneck in the emerging technology. Existing e-skin technology loses sensing accuracy (传感精度) as the material stretches (拉伸), but that is not the case with this new version.
E-skin technology senses pressure from contact, letting the attached machine know how much force to use to, for example, grab a cup or touch a person. But, when traditional e-skin is stretched, it also senses that deformation. That reading creates additional noise that skews (使有误差) the sensors’ ability to sense the pressure. That could lead to a robot using too much force to grab something.
“As human skin has to stretch and bend to accommodate our movements, so too does e-skin,” said Nanshu Lu, a professor in the Cockrell School of Engineering who led the project. “No matter how much our e-skin stretches, the pressure response doesn’t change, and that is a significant achievement.” Lu envisages the stretchy e-skin as a key component to a robot hand capable of the same level of softness and sensitivity (灵敏度) in touch as a human hand. This could be applied to medical care, where robots could check a patient’s pulse, wipe a body or massage a body part.
Why is a robot nurse or physical therapist necessary? Around the world, millions of people are aging and are in need of care, more than the global medical system can provide. “In the future, if we have more elderly people than available caregivers, it’s going to be a crisis worldwide,” Lu said. “We need to find new ways to take care of people efficiently and also gently, and robots are an important piece of that puzzle.” Beyond medicine, human-caring robots could be deployed in disasters. They could search for injured and trapped people in an earthquake or a collapsed building, for example, and apply on-the-spot care, such as administering CPR (心肺复苏术).
12. What’s the problem of the traditional e-skin?
A. Poor control of force. B. Low levels of softness.
C. Misjudgments of distance. D. Loud noise of the machine.
13. What does the underlined word “envisages” in the third paragraph mean?
A. Imagines. B. Monitors. C. Improves. D. Tests.
14. What makes Lu think robot caregivers necessary?
A. The high turnover of medical staff. B. The ageing of the population.
C. Their high quality of care. D. Their low operating costs.
15. Which can be the best title for the text?
A. Human skin has higher touch sensitivity than e-skin.
B. Robots need e-skin with higher touch sensitivity.
C. Stretchy e-skin gives robots human-level touch sensitivity.
D. Stretchy e-skin improves the efficiency of medical systems.
【答案】12. A 13. A 14. B 15. C
【解析】
【导语】本文主要讲的是一种可拉伸电子皮肤让机器人具备人类级别的触觉,有望缓解老龄化社会的护理危机。
【12题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“But, when traditional e-skin is stretched, it also senses that deformation. That reading creates additional noise that skews (使有误差) the sensors’ ability to sense the pressure. That could lead to a robot using too much force to grab something. (但传统电子皮肤在被拉伸时,也会感应到这种形变。这种读数会产生额外的噪声,从而干扰传感器感知压力的能力。这可能导致机器人在抓取物体时用力过大。)”可知,传统电子皮肤的核心问题是力的控制不够精准。
【13题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段“the stretchy e-skin as a key component to a robot hand capable of the same level of softness and sensitivity (灵敏度) in touch as a human hand. This could be applied to medical care, where robots could check a patient’s pulse, wipe a body or massage a body part. (这种可拉伸电子皮肤可作为机器人手掌的关键组件,使其具备与人手相同水平的柔软度和触觉灵敏度。这项技术可应用于医疗护理领域,机器人能够检查患者的脉搏、擦拭身体或按摩身体部位。)”可知,划线词后都是Lu的一些设想和展望,envisage的意思是“展望”,和Imagines意思相近。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“Around the world, millions of people are aging and are in need of care, more than the global medical system can provide. “In the future, if we have more elderly people than available caregivers, it’s going to be a crisis worldwide,” Lu said. (在全球范围内,数百万人正在步入老年,需要护理,而现有的全球医疗系统无法满足这一需求。卢说:“将来,如果老年人的数量超过可用的护理人员,这将成为一场全球性危机。”)”可知,卢认为机器人护理员是必要的是因为人口的老龄化。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段“The new stretchy (有弹性的) electronic skin, developed by researchers at The University of Texas at Austin, solves a major bottleneck in the emerging technology. Existing e-skin technology loses sensing accuracy (传感精度) as the material stretches (拉伸), but that is not the case with this new version. 。

She had taken many wild mountain trips there before, so she was quite familiar with the local terrain (地形) and road conditions. However, right after she climbed up to a mountain top, a sudden terrible storm arrived without any warning. It began to snow heavily at once, and very soon, she found herself trapped in the middle of a violent snowstorm.
Standing at the highest point for miles around, Jean was at great risk of being hit by lightning. She gave up the original plan of going back along the fixed trail (小径) and chose to climb down the steep and icy mountain slope carefully, believing in her climbing experience and skills.
Unluckily, during one difficult part on the way, Jean suddenly slipped and fell more than 100 feet down the rocky mountain. She was lucky enough to stay alive after the fall, but she suffered serious injuries, with many broken bones and terrible body pain.
Worse still, because of the extreme weather, there was no signal on her mobile phone, which made it totally impossible for her to call anyone for help. Jean had no choice but to walk slowly through deep snow all the way back to the starting trailhead. Throughout the journey back, Jean suffered continuously from great pain. When she finally walked with difficulty into a parking lot, Jean immediately fell down to the ground. It had been exactly one day since she fell down from the mountain. Her clothes were all covered with blood, and she was too tired to hold on, nearly passing out on the spot.
Just then, a car pulled in. A man was driving, with his wife in the passenger seat.

Seeing Jean’s condition, the man jumped out to help. Shocked by her terrible state, the couple didn’t hesitate to offer assistance. They gently lifted Jean up and laid her on the back seat of the car, covering her with a warm blanket to keep her from freezing in the cold weather. The man drove at top speed towards the nearest hospital while his wife comforted Jean softly, trying to keep her awake. Thanks to their timely rescue, Jean was sent to the emergency room and received professional treatment immediately.
As soon as Jean left the hospital, she managed to get the couple’s address. She prepared a delicate thank-you gift and paid a visit to them sincerely. Jean expressed her heartfelt gratitude repeatedly, saying that she could never have survived the terrible accident without their selfless help. The couple smiled and told her that it was just what anyone would do. This unforgettable experience not only saved Jean’s life, but also made her believe deeply in the warmth and kindness of strangers.

Jean set off for a mountain trip in the Sierra Nevada, a famous mountainous area in California. She had a deep love for outdoor adventures (冒险) and was always prepared for her trips.
